As I began working with the holotable I began remembering some of the details about the man. One of the things I remembered about him was how he simply went by C. Another was his general physique, tall, strong and built like a tank. Along with that he seemed to act partially the same way as some of the governesses guards that you would see walking around. Not to mention he also knew where and when they would show up. One of the things that stood out most to me was his eyes. They were a bright green and almost looked like they glowed, but that was impossible, nobody could actually glow. Usually it's a trick of the light. At least that's what I'll keep telling myself. I wanted to know more about him. I sat back in the chair I twiddle my thumbs then decided to try a few phrases out. "The green eyed man, the guard with green eyes. Nothing was working so maybe I had to be more specific so I decided to put in the description.
The green eyed guard whose name began with C. I hit the enter button and within thirty seconds three articles popped up on seperate websites.
The first was called "the prodigy". As I opened the website most, if not all of the article was covered in black ink. It told the story of a male named Cormac who had been the youngest at the time to enter the elite guardsman standings. He was a driven and focused guy who had shown great promise in his hand to hand combat skills along with acing an exam that most men who were much older couldn't even succeed in. It also spoke about what he did to someone older than him who tried to inflict harm on him. It was a senior student that was trying to pick on someone younger than themselves which this guy did not like. He ended up walking towards the guy and proceeded to throw him against the wall and said this quote "I'd suggest going against someone closer to your size. I know more than you think I do and I won't be held responsible next time." he then proceeded to break the other kid's arm and shoved him to the ground before returning back to his normal duties. It also said he was never punished for the action as the guards had to be trained to improvise.
The second article was called "new friends"
This article had multiple things covered as well in black ink. What could be seen spoke of how Cormac ended up becoming one of the best students in his class. It also spoke of two others that were not far behind him as well. Each of them had their own strengths in different subjects that they worked in. The first person was someone referred to as Ray, As the rest of the name was blacked out. The other was called demo. Both of these were nicknames not their real names. From what I could read It basically talked about how the trio worked together over the next few years. the three of them would train hard and not give up. At some point there was an incident of sorts that caused Ray to leave the guard program causing Cormac to lose touch with them. The other one though had stayed by Cormac and together they graduated from the academy where they had been training. They went on to be guards together and thought of each other as brothers. It would be rare to see one without the other.
While reading these I wondered who had been the one to write the articles. I looked around the pages for a few minutes until I found the author's name. The writer went by J Orman. Interesting name, it seemed he did the same thing as some authors have done to protect their identities. It looked to me as if the articles had been written by the same person, so either he knew this man or something else to that effect.
I went back to the main page and looked at the last article. There was a darker tone to this one as it was called
"A fallen hero"
I look at it for a moment before opening it on the hologram.
As It opened up the first paragraph spoke about the man Cormac and Demo. It talked about how the two of them had climbed the hierarchical tier system and became the two youngest guards that were given the title as the governesses personal guards. But for some reason they declined it. This was quite odd because anyone who could make it that far and be trusted that much would usually take the position because in doing this they would be given much more freedom the guards of lower tiers. Along with this they had been the only ones to survive through 14 missions outside the city's walls. With this it was stated that when the two of them went on a mission together with a unit of however many other guards were needed they would decrease the death rate on these particular missions. Usually around 75 percent of those who would leave wouldn't come back, meaning only 25 percent of that group would return. But with Cormac and Demo being the main leaders of the unit they would end up having a higher survival rate, increasing it from 35 percent to 70 percent meaning only 30 percent of their troops wouldn't come back.
I stared at this in awe seeing that these two people seemed to do some amazing things for their people. They as well must be talented in it. I began getting closer to the end of the page and began to look at the last few paragraphs in the article.
It began to speak of what ended up being the final mission for the two. Their troop was sent out on a mission to a place where there had been a rise in violence from some of the creatures that lurked on the outside. They were thinking it was small but they ended up being ambushed. Different tiers had banned together and ambushed the small group of maybe around 35 men. They fought hard and tried to escape but sadly there would be few survivors. Demo alongside Cormac had made a plan and together we are the tier 15, one of the strongest creatures there. Everything was going according to plan but they made a mistake, and Demo was caught in its line of fire. The creature ended up getting a hold of him and threw him quite a distance where he landed somewhere in and among a large forest. Cormac froze and began running towards it. He told his troops to fall back, so they did and they escaped with the few of them left. It was a bloody battle. Cormac had begun running towards the forest to find his dear friend and brother but was caught by some of his men telling him he had to be sensible, and that they couldn't go after them. Defeated and at a loss they began their trek home with what remained of their group. Only 15 survived that night.
A ceremony was held to mourn the loss of Demo and the rest of the men. He had been presumed dead because most people who entered that forest usually never did return
. The governess then gave a speech.
"It is with great sadness that I must speak of the ones who have passed on, they were all guards. But more of their commander Demo. He was a friend and a brother and he will be greatly missed. I must review and read the will of the now deceased. It states that the man named Cormac has gained the full value of Demos will. Due to the multiple missions they went on together they ended up receiving a sanction within this city for their hard work and diligence. For every 7 successful missions the leader receives 1 part of the city, one of the 32 sanctions throughout it. Demo had fourteen successful missions under his belt. as did his best friend and battle partner. Therefore Cormac will now own a total of four sections, two of them were his and the other two in the will of Demo. Cormac will now both own and operate any building within sections 26 through to 30. Two of the main places within these are the Nightbreak bar. The very same bar that would have been opened by Comac and Demo. The other being the Brightland hotel. But for now I will say goodbye to what might have been our greatest guard. Cormac I hope your retirement from the guards suits your life." at the bottom of the article there was a photo, the only one I had seen through the ones I read. There stood 2 men in uniforms, their arms linked around each other's shoulders showing that even they were still human under the strong mask of what was meant to be a guard.
I began to look closer at the one who had the name Cormac below it but didn't get a good look before a knock came from the door. I jumped at the sudden noise then quickly grabbed something to write a couple things down, I then shut everything down as macy walked in. She looked concerned.
"Did you find everything you need dear?
"Yea I think so what time is it now anyways?"
"Oh it's been about an hour and a half you must be famished. though have you had anything to eat yet?"
"No I haven't, am I still able to get something?"
"Sure just tell me what you want and I will go ask one of the chefs in the kitchen to make it for you."
"Okay.. if by chance I can have two eggs sunny side up brought up to my room I'm going there to think."
"That's fine dear I'll bring it up when it's ready."
I then headed back to my room. Once I got there I put the folded up piece of paper on the desk and flopped on the bed. I had just learnt a lot and now I was trying to make sense of it all. I closed my eyes to think.
About fifteen minutes later Macy gave me my breakfast. I ate quickly and looked around my room. It was odd because it felt somewhat similar. I stand up and walk over to the desk that sat near a window and look at the piece of paper I had recently put there. I sat down and opened it and looked at the scribbles I wrote.
-The nightbreak bar
-The brightland hotel.
Search these when you get the chance.
Well now was as good a time then anything else. I pulled out the old phone I had managed to find and fix to make it work again and began to type in the two different places. Starting with the brightland hotel. A few pictures came up and surprised me. They looked to be the building I was in but I had to make sure. I threw on a jacket and a pair of boots and ran outside. Sure enough when I looked at the building compared to the picture it was the same place. My suspicions arose.
Suddenly off in the distance I could hear what sounded like music. I turned to where it was coming from and began to walk towards it. A short walk later I was in front of a small crowd and there was a man standing on something and singing while playing his guitar. The music was beautiful and had a strong meaning. As I watched he ended up looking towards me and smiled slightly. It was interesting. I then realized I had to stop and get back to work. So I turned and began to walk back from the way I had come. Little did I notice he watched me as I left.
I got back to the hotel and went back inside. I brushed the snow off of me and went back to my room. After I sat down I brought the phone back out and searched up the nightbreak bar. Luckily for me it wasn't too far away. So with that I began to make a plan. In order for me to find out more I would have to see him again. But a business meeting, what exactly could that mean? I thought to myself. I decide that during the night I will do something to find him or better yet have him come to me. I just didn't know what. Eventually though something will come to me.
About three hours passed and I walked back down the stairs to see Macy at the front desk on the cell phone. I stopped In my tracks and hid against the wall as I listened in on the conversation. .
I could hear a man's voice when he spoke about something. He Said " your new shipment will be delivered tonight. C is not doing the drop off himself, J will be coming in expecting him at around twelve. In the meantime, Ray will be doing the daily patrols till C is ready."
Ray, I read about that person earlier, but it said they had left and had lost contact. Odd. How did they find one another again."Ray waited, that's the name from the article. I believed I had heard those other names as well or at least I saw them Jay must be another person's code name. But what was it with having all of these code names? What were they trying to hide? The man had said a shipment would be here tonight. Then that gives me an idea. I'll come back later on and see if I can figure out what the hell is going on. I was growing impatient and I wanted answers now. I headed back to my room to pass the time and began doing more research just to see if I could figure anything else out on my own.
As I waited around till the night I looked in to some more things and found an article talking about how Cormac had an adopted daughter who would be just about nineteen right now. She had tried to assassinate the governess but was stopped by Cormac but instead of being killed he was able to convince everyone that he could change her ways. So he adopted her and kept her from being killed.
I hadn't realized but Macy had been watching me, she had known I was there. Maybe, just maybe did they actually want me to uncover the secrets that lay in these walls.
