Chapter 1 - Chapter one

I woke up to the sound of the fire alarm, the smell of burning wood and a coughing fit.

I got up from my bed alarmed seeing a big fire, near my window in the room, quickly crawling towards me.

"Mom, there's a fire in the house!" I yelled, getting out of my room and going to my mom's room quick, just to not find her in the room.

"Ma, where are you? The house is on fire!" I panicked while looking for her around the house, still not finding her.

I looked for a phone to call 911, but all the phones were gone.

What the heck?

I got out the house to use the neighbor's phone, when I heard sirens coming closer.

Was the fire that bad that the neighbors saw it?

I turned around seeing the fire has eaten half of the house. Fear washed over me as I sat at the sideway of the road, staring at the house. I can see that the fire truck and the ambulance had arrived to the house I grew up in, the one holding so many memories, good and bad, sad and happy, ugly and beautiful. The one house I knew my father in. The one house I got the joy of knowing what having twin sisters feels like.

The realization hit me, and my eyes went wide. They were still inside of that same house.

I got up and started running towards the house, pushing past firefighters, not caring about their attempts of me to stop.

All I wanted is for them to be safe.

When I got to the porch and was about to kick the door open, hands grabbed my waste.

"Let me go, they're still inside!" I said.

"Who's inside?" A deep but soft voice said.

I couldn't get a good look at him since he was holding me from behind.

"My baby sisters, you moron!" I yelled for him to let me go.

I saw that worry in his eyes as he looked at the house.

"Connor! Come and hold this girl, don't let her escape your sight" the man yelled for whoever Connor was.

I then felt another hands grab my waste, I turned around seeing a young man- maybe in his early twenties- with blonde hair and crystal green eyes that are lightened by the fire, wearing a mask around his mouth.

I saw the man that yelled to Connor, grab an extra mask and going in the house.

"Nick, what are you doing?!" Connor yelled after -who I know his name now- Nick.

"There are still kids in there!" Nick said, disappearing inside the house.

"That boy is crazy" I heard Connor mumble under his breath.

Connor was strong I must admit, I couldn't get out of his arms, no matter how hard I tried. He dragged me to the ambulance and told a paramedic to check on me.

Ten minutes had passed; the fire is so big it's still not out. There was still no sign of My baby sisters or Nick. I really started to get worried, I can see Connor, the paramedics and the other firefighters are too, and that's never a good sign.

It's been fifteen minutes now and there was still no sign of them coming out soon, the fire was almost out though. I couldn't help but think about where my mom is and why she didn't show up yet.

Did she leave because she was sad and took a walk, but lost her way? She's been doing that ever since my dad, two months ago. We've been living here since I was three and I'm 19 now, it was dark out though and that might've happened. I hope someone will find her and tell her what happened then get her to us.

We all started losing hope, causing me to sit on a bench opposite what was once my house, crying.

Suddenly everyone started cheering and for a second I thought they all went crazy. That was until I looked up and saw Nick, holding my two little precious sisters!

I ran up to him and took them from his hands. I hugged them tightly, until I heard a soft voice that belonged to I'm guessing Nick "they need to be checked on" he breathed out, clearly exhausted.

I nodded without looking at him, heading straight to the ambulance with the paramedics inside.

After some quick checkups they said that we needed to get them to the nearest hospital as they had breathed smoke in and seeing how small they are we might lose them.

I felt a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes as I got in the ambulance, holding both of Angel and Melody's hands. "Hold on babies, hold on for me." I whispered.

We arrived at the hospital and I sat in the waiting room as they took my sisters for examination.

I was sobbing in my hands bitterly, when I felt someone put their hand on my back , rubbing it in a comforting way.

I looked up just to see the firefighter that saved Melody and Angel's lives- Nick. He had chocolate brown curly hair that was a mess and light brown eyes. I noticed that he had a lazy eye, he also had a scar on his cheek and he was pretty tall-like 6'3 tall. He was also really fit. He had a few ashes on his cheek and forehead from the fire.

"Hey, you okay?" He said. "Do I look okay?" I rolled my puffy eyes. "Yes, sorry, stupid question" he rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

"Are you?" I asked, he saved the twins after all.

"Yea, I'm fine just a little burn, but I'm used to it." he held his bandaged hand up for me to see, with a soft smile. I nodded and looked down.

"Thank you for saving them" I smile a warm, sad half smile.

"My pleasure."

"I'm sorry I called you a moron earlier." I said feeling guilty. "It's fine, I understand, you were worried." He said followed by a reassuring smile.

"I'm Nick, Nick smith" he said after a while of silence, sticking his hand out; for me to shake.

"Arabella star" I gave him a soft smile and shake his hand, then looking down.

"Cute name" he chuckled."Thanks" I looked at him. I couldn't give him more than a little smile.

We got to know each other a little bit and that took my mind off the twins for a while, as much as I hate to admit it.

"Family of Melody and Angel star" A doctor called from the door of the waiting room. I jumped up and went to him as he looked up from the board he was holding.

"Are they okay?" I asked full of hope. "Yes, Melody is fine, she's going to recover quickly-maybe in a week or two time, she's going to need the breathing tube for a while though. so she's going to stay in the hospital for the next three days. She's sleeping right now." he said cheerfully. "That's great! What about Angel?" I said happy.

He sighed and began talking "I'm sorry, she couldn't make it. She breathed in way too much smoke." He looked at me sympathetically.

"Oh" was all I could say as I felt my heart drop to my stomach, lump forming in my throat and tears coming up for what felt like the hundredth time today. Some of the tears fell down on my cheek, despite how hard I tried to not cry in front of the doctor. I let out a chocked sob. "I'm really sorry, we tried everything we could." He said putting a hand on my shoulder.

"Can I at least say goodbye?" I whispered, not trusting my voice. "Yea, of course. Come with me." Said the doctor walking to where Angie was.

I felt a hand go around my shoulder as we were walking to her. I looked up, seeing Nick hugging my side, giving me a sided hug with a sad smile. "It'll be alright." He said, softly.

I just met him and he had been better than most of my friends.
