Chapter 25 - Better Safe than Sorry

"Princess, I'm leaving now for the meeting in Baton Rouge. I'll be back tomorrow, but you call me if you need anything."

"Alright, dad. No need to worry about me."

"I mean it. Call me if you need ANYTHING."

"Okay. I got it."

My dad walks out of my room and I go back to doing my school work. The pack house was pretty quiet when all the kids were at school and the adults did their daily routine. My uncle Christian always came over to give me my school work for the day.

It was boring seeing the same four walls of my room all day and having to wait until school was out to see the girls.

My phone started ringing on my desk and I see Tarry facetiming me. I answer it and I'm greeted by his welcoming face.

"Hey, Anne. Feeling any better today," he asks me.

"Definitely better than last week. I only threw up once today so far. It's lunch time already?"

"I can't believe who've been sick for a week. At least your starting to get better. Everyone misses you. We're all here in the cafeteria." Tarry moves the camera around to show me the crew, but of course Alaric is missing from the table.

"Yeah, I'm getting tired of being stuck in this room too." I hear the knock I've been waiting for at my door.

"Come in," I yell to the person behind it. "I'll talk to you later. Alaric just got here." Tarry says goodbye and Alaric walks in.

"Hey, how you feeling," he asks me, like everyone else.

"I'll feel better once you share some of that food with me," I tell him, motiong to the paper bag in his hand filled with food.

We both sit on my bed and he takes out the food.

I've been sick for a week and Alaric has made sure to visit me during lunch time to make sure I eat. Everyone basically looks after me in shifts.

When it's time to wake up for school around six, the girls come after there done getting ready to check up on me. Alaric brings me breakfast with Don and they all leave for school. My dad come in to hang out with me until he has to leave for work. Tarry calls me during lunch time and I know Alaric is on his way to bring me food. After we're done eating, Alaric leaves back to school and aunt Petra comes to keep me company.

I can look after myself, but their all worried that I'm going to choke on my vomit.

"How's everything with you and your wife," I bring up while we're eating. I know Alaric doesn't like talking about it, so I bring it up on purpose. He thought I forgot about what happened at the party because I was sick, but I didn't.

I haven't seen him with Gianna lately and I wanted to know what happened to them. At this point I was confused. He pretty much claimed me at the party, but he knows we can't be together because he's engaged to Gianna.

"Just eat your food, Anne."

"So, you don't want to talk about what happened? We're just supposed to pretend nothing happened," I ask him softly. He finally makes eye contact with me.

"I don't want to talk about this?"

"Are you serious," I ask him and he goes back to not looking at me. "So, you love Gianna?"

"No." He answers fast.

"How can you not? It seems to me that your ok with marrying her and I wouldn't blame you. She's a beautiful girl, although her personality is the opposite."

"It's not like that all. I don't have a choice."

"Of course you have a choice. You just prefer platinum, white haired girls." He was starting to get annoyed and I could see it on his face.

"Anne, I like you. It hurts me to see you with other guys."

"So, what your saying is that you want me to be ok with you liking us both. It doesn't work like that, Alaric."

"I don't like Gianna! Believe me when I say I've tried to end the engagement." I can tell he's not telling me everything.

"What's really keeping you from ending the engagement?" He takes a pause to search my eyes and I wait for his answer, but it never comes because my door is suddenly pushed open.

"Oh, Alaric! I wasn't expecting you to still be here. Shouldn't you already be on your way back to school?" Petra was standing nervously by the door with a supermarket bag in her hand.

Something is definitely up with her.

Alaric checks the time on the watch on his arm. "Your right. I should get going."

Alaric sends me a look that I can't seem to read and leaves my room. Guilt or maybe sadness?

I watched Petra nervously walk over to the bed and sit down next to me.

"What's up with you," I ask her, raising my eyebrows. I have never seen her like this.

"Well, I never thought I'd be have this talk with you," she says and I wait for her to explain.

"Don't freak out about what I'm about to ask you. It's totally normal." She was trying to stall her question and I just send her a straight face.

"Did you and Alaric use protection?" My eyes widen in shock.

"Oh my goodness! Of course we did, Petra. I'm not stupid," I shriek my answer.

"It was just a question! You have been throwing up for a straight week."

"You think I'm pregnant?!" She avoids eye contact with me, but takes out three pregnancy tests from the supermarket bag.

"You've gotta be kidding me!"

"It's better safe than sorry! If you said you used protection, I believe you, but it's always good to check. There's nothing to be worried about."

We stay quiet for second, having a staring contest. We were both very stubborn people, but in the end, she wins.

I breathe out a sigh and take the sticks from her.

"Fine, but your not coming into the bathroom with me." I walk into the bathroom and read the instructions on the tests. I could hear Petra pacing back and forth in my bedroom.

"Could you chill out! Your making me unnecessarily nervous," I scream through the door to her. I hear her take a seat on my bed and sigh.

With shaky hands I follow the instructions and pee in a cup. I place them all in and set a timer.

Honestly, these fifthteen minutes in waiting felt like a whole week has passed. I don't know why I was nervous. We were completely safe. Right?

Petra had filled my mind with doubts and I couldn't stop them from spreading now.

What would I even do with a baby? This was definitely not in my plans.

Scratch that. I won't have to think about what to do with a baby because there isn't a baby.

"What's taking so long?" Petra had bursted into the bathroom, looking more impatient than me. In that second, the timer rang and we both hesitated to take a look.

"You want me to check for you," Petra asked me once she saw I wasn't making any plans to check any time soon. I nod my head and wait for her to check.

Petra walks over to the cup and carefully picks up the sticks from the cup, making sure not to touch the pee.

I watch her stare at the results with no facial expression.

What's that face supposed to mean?!

She looks up at me and I already know what the results are before she even mutters a word.
