Chereads / The Next Archangel / Chapter 11 - A trap

Chapter 11 - A trap

"Why did we leave that witch alone?"

"We are enemies with the devils, not the witches who worship them...also it looked as if she also hadn't wanted a fight."

Kyle's answer was acceptable for Alicia who no longer asked any questions on the topic. Kyle had a cheerful aura around him and was now walking at Hannah's side, Alicia was leading the group. Hannah was slightly uncomfortable..

"Can we really trust a witch...what if she has a coven and turns into a real threat for us."

"I doubt..."

"Why?"

"Because I doubt she could harm us..."

"What makes you think that."

Kyle had a wide grin and simply said.

"I just do."

Hannah didn't inquire any further and just followed Kyle in walking. Alicia suddenly stopped in her tracks and she stared to her right in wide eyes.

"LOOK OUT!!"

The warning was faster than the attack and Kyle unhesitatingly pushed Hannah behind him and with a quick glance, he held the sword so that the flat part of the blade blocked his right eye. A streak of silver flashed and the sound of metal hitting metal resounded. Kyle saw what had hit his sword and frowned when he saw that it was an arrow. Alicia wasn't reacting positively to the attack.

She moved her hands to the bow on her back and in a single motion she pulled it off and was pulling on the string. The shape of energy collecting at the arrow rest was a sphere but it was more condensed with energy collecting faster. She was about to release in the direction the arrow came from when she felt someone tapping her shoulder. She turned to meet her sister's eyes staring deeply into hers.

Alicia then stopped her rage and let the energy dissipate into the air. She closed her eyes and counted to the number 20 while slowing her breathing. She had calmed down.

Hannah was happy that her sister was able to control herself this time. But then there was the issue of that arrow. Just then Hannah felt a change in the air above them, magic energy had suddenly occupied that space. She quickly looked up and saw a small thin line grow larger in size. It turned into a crack that spread into thinner cracks.

"PORTAL MAGIC!!"

Quickly Alicia grabbed Hannah's waist and pulled her to the side while Kyle hopped backwards with his sword in front of him. The portal finished forming and the sound of glass shattering could be heard throughout the forest. The next second several arrow tips appeared from the dark void and arranged themselves in rows. The angels were still within the range of the arrows and the volley dropped at great speeds in a single second.

The arrows hit the ground, branches and sprayed several dirt chunks everywhere. Alicia hunched herself over while protecting her sister from the volley. The first of several arrows hit her backside and Alicia winced in pain as several more followed after. Hannah watched in horror as her sister was hit by arrows.

Myrac had been in turmoil when he saw the portal and without his master's consent, summoned himself. He tried to use his pole to protect Alicia from the arrows. His black pole flashed and Myrac's hands were a constant blur as he deflected arrow after arrow. Eventually, he was able to block every single one of them letting Alicia stand over her sister.

"WHY DID YOU DO THAT!?!"

Hannah wasn't happy in any way and screamed at her sister's foolishness. Alicia smiled and simply said.

"It actually doesn't hut too much..."

"You have at least 25 arrows sticking out of your back!!"

"I'm serious...it actually doesn't hurt too much."

The next moment Alicia stood up straight while letting Hannah's waist go. She then started doing stretches!! Hannah was shocked to see her sister doing star jumps so easily and bending backwards without pain. Alicia was smiling and pulled an arrow shaft from her back. Unfortunately, the arrow had snapped and the arrow tip was still stuck in her back but she felt no more pain.

Hannah stared in disbelief as the arrow rain slowed and finally came to a stop. Myrac leisurely let the arrows hit the dirt as the range thinned. He turned to look at his master and to his delight, she was perfectly fine. He then turned to the arrows in the ground and was slightly angered as they numbered in numerous tens, Probably slightly over 150...

He looked to where Kyle had receded to defend himself from the arrows. Kyle stepped out of the shade of a tree and was scratching his head in annoyance. Three arrows were sticking out of his head comically. He was grumbling to himself and approached the others.

When he reached, Hannah was grabbing her sister's cheeks and pulling on them while Alicia was in pain. Myrac was silent and the arrows around them were mostly broken.

"A trap?"

"CAN'T YOU SEE IM BUSY!!"

Hannah was in no mood to start a theory debate with Kyle right now.

"You had me scared!"

"ow-ow-ow!"

Alicia massaged her cheeks when Hannah finally let them go. Hannah turned to Kyle and with an exasperated sigh, she finally answered him.

"Most likely...but it's mechanics are something I can't ascertain. It started immediately after that first arrow that went for your eye."

"Trap triggered by conflict?"

"There are no such things..."

"Then what..."

"Myrac could you please keep watch for us."

Myrac nodded silently and with his pole, he walked to Hannah's side. With that Hannah continued to speak.

"I think it was something triggered by a sensor for Death magic."

"What..."

"That arrow that had hit you earlier...although weak I could sense Dead mana but I thought it was just from another spot where the death-grimoire was used...but now I'm sure of it. That timing was too convenient."

"But who would make a trap that activates around Death magic? also, I'm sure there is no undead within this forest."

"Have we been through the entire forest?"

"No...."

"Then you can't say for certain that they aren't here."

Kyle acknowledged this and seemed to think to himself. He had read a few books on the topic of death magic...the number of theories on how it worked was numerous. The one he thought to be most likely for the trap to be made against was...

"Necromancers?"

"I don't know."

Hannah wasn't all-knowing so she couldn't be sure.

"Anyways I think we should leave this place."

Kyle was growing more uncomfortable by the second. Hannah agreed and they both turned to Alicia who was sitting on the ground. She noticed their gazes and nodded her head, agreeing to their decision. So without any more delaying, they decided to continue on their walk. They were now more sure that they were on the right path out of the forest because of a quick question to the notebook earlier. Apparently, the forest was an overly large crescent with a single path that headed to its centre. They were heading deeper into the forest but at the same time were getting closer to the path out.

"If it is necromancers, what do we do?"

"We do what we must."
