Chapter 11 - Yosif the adventurer

It is now 3 days since I got a job at the Courageous Courier, Roxanne has started warming up to me so i don't have to 'sleep' with my eyes open again. After I taught Roxanne how to make chicken Kiev, she added it to the menu which was instantly a hit. People were drawn to it like a moth to flame and just yesterday I finished my second recipe black bread Boris style with strawberry Babushka jam. And just like before, everybody loves it and the inn's popularity slowly rises as well. Of course I get a lot of questions but why do I wear armor while cooking but I just reply you can never be too careful which sate their curiosity for now. I gained a total of 15 silvers after those days.

I didn't work full time as I need to spend some time training and learning too. It would be work from 7am to 2pm, then I spent an hour or two checking out books and the town library before going hunting at night. The area only has wolves but still, normal hunters can run into trouble if they run into a pack so people are appreciating me lessening the numbers.

I was in the markets stockpiling food until I notice 4 familiar faces nearby. It was Lana, Luna, Derek and Jacob. I was already done wi5h my shopping so I went over to them to see what they're doing. Jacob has large grin plastered on his face which is unusual and unnerving to say the least while Luna and Lana are comforting a sobbing...Derek?

Me: the heck is going on here?

Jacob: oh nothing, Derek here is just a wee bit afraid of needles ain't that right?

At this point Derek broke into full blown crying that is starting to attract attention from the bystanders.

Me: so what exactly is wrong with that?

Jacob: the fool signed up for health inspection and screamed like a bloody little girl in front of Maria herself.

F, there's no coming back from that my boy you're better off looking for another girl. Though as hilarious as this is, i can't help but feel sad for the poor guy.

Derek: IT'S ALL OVER, MY MANLINESS IS RUINED!

Lana: oh cmon things could've been a lot worse.

Derek: *sniff* oh *sniff* yeah? Like what?

Me: you could've been lost to the friend zone.

Jacob: what is a friend zone?

Me: it's when your crush will be close to you but whatever you do will always result in her loving you as a FRIEND.

Both of the other men shudder at such a cruel fate. Lana and Luna didn't pay much mind to it, more relieved that they don't have to comfort Derek like an overgrown baby in public.

Luna: wait aren't you supposed to be cooking right now?

Me: no, I only work to 2pm and after that I restock on supplies and go hunting. What are you guys doing err supposed to be doing right now.

Jacob: we're heading to the guild for more quests, gotta make a living you know?

Lana: this time we're sticking it safe to hunting quests or helper quests, I'm still afraid of dungeons after fighting you, no offense.

Me: none taken, can I join you too?

Jacob: you're thinking of becoming an adventurer?

Me: cooking is nice and all but I need actions too. Plus the extra income is always welcomed.

Luna: i don't see a problem with that, maybe we can even go on quests together someday too.

While walking to the adventurer guild, i start to notice the more dreary part of Gobi. Although joyful townsfolks were a common sight, so too was poverty in the ghetto. Aside from the King outrageous tax and the recent pandemic, the economy itself just can't sustain everybody. Elderly sleeping in alleys, children in rags with no one to care for them, even stray animals that are malnourished. Not gonna lie seeing a sad puppy being held by a little girl made me want to storm the palace cut off the King's balls, if he had any that is. This shit will not go on you hear me? As a chef and supporter of communism, this sight is UNACCEPTABLE.

Being so lost in my though of improving the people's life, i didn't notice our arrival at the guild and accidentally bump into Jacob who just shrug it off. That man's will to live is the equivalent to God's faith in humanity, almost non-existent. The building itself is pretty unimpressive but after a brief history lesson from Luna, my opinion completely change. Roughly 300 years ago, Ulfric The Shield Breaker and Eugene Thousand Cuts who are both mithril tier warriors freed this land of dragons and monsters alike. From there, Ulfric suggested that they build a base there to monitor the area but after Eugene seeing the amount of natural resources, they expanded from a base to a town. That base was the guild building, and the town itself is Gobi. For a few patch of moss on the cobblestone walls outside and some scratches to the wood, the place is quite clean and sturdy for something that old.

Inside was a stark contrast to the outside, instead of hushed whispers every now and then the inside is bustling with festivity. People drinking to their heart's content, couple of gamblers trying their luck and some mages playing chess. In the far back center of the room of the room was a counter where adventurers register or turn in their quest that is ran by a bear of a man with grizzly beard and ripped muscles. To the right was the supply station for all adventurer's needs that runs by a ranking system. By doing quests and contributing to the guild in any way, you'll accumulate points and with those points you can exchange for provisions. It's like a gift shop if one would sell swords and staves with potions. The station is ran by a woman with green pigtails wearing round glasses and a baggy purple mage robe.

We approach the counter first because i need registration before i can take quests 'legally' although doing so as a mercenary pays better, your customer would not be the most trustworthy out there. In the guild though, you may not get the full reward but you can also earn bonuses on extra objectives and the guild personally made sure the clients pay up.

Luna: hey uncle Matt we're back

The man named Matt just finished talking with a pair of archers turns to us with a wide grin.

Matt: haha your brats are back for more eh? Who's the fellow in heavy armor besides you, can't say i've seen an adventurer like you around.

Lana: this is our friend Yosif, he's new in town and he wants to sign up as an adventurer.

Matt: oh? new around Gobi aren't you, my name's Matt Flameberg, the head of this branch of the guild.

Me: pleasure to meet you as well, so what do i need to do in order to register?

Matt: Straight to business eh? i like you already. It's nothing much really, just pay a fee of 5 silvers and take this card here, it'll form your own adventurer card.

Matt took out what seems like a credit card after i pay him the silvers. It was blank and looked like a plain sheet of steel but when i touch it, it started glowing. When the light settles down, i can now see my information on it.

Yosif Title: none

Level:?

Adventurer rank: copper

Class:?

Current quest: none

Matt looked flabbergasted when he glances at my card, must be because of the undefined level.

Matt: to think i would have the honor of seeing another one...

Jacob: what are you talking about old man?

Matt: the card has always succeeded in classifying the strength of a person, only a few masters can make it go blank like that. Sir Yosif, it is an honor to have you with us.

Yes, unmeasurable power and potential... definitely not because i'm an undead.

Me: *cough* no need for formalities, it's okay. So where do i pick up quests.

Matt: right there over to the big board on my right, we have all sort of jobs. Escorting, gathering, exploring, slaying,... you name it.

The board was indeed gigantic like the one in overlord and it's a hell of a relief when i see all the texts are in English. i do not want to be known as an illiterate musclehead. There is diverse variety but i'll stick to slaying, that is without a doubt the most entertaining one. Bears, Ghouls, Ghosts, Skeletons,... *GASP*. I knew it! no matter what fantasy world you're in there will always be these disgusting piece of shit plaguing the land. MOTHERFUCKING GOBLINS!
