Chapter 2 - Shadows Awaken

"Oh, finally. You're awake!" Scarlett shouted as she plated pancakes and set them on the dining table. Krystal walked downstairs half awake and looked at the food. She smiled and thanked Scarlett. "So?" Scarlett asked. "So what?" Krystal had a confused look on her face. Scarlett facepalmed. "Do you want to join me on the adventure?" Scarlett said, she was slightly annoyed. "Oh! Uhh...Yeah, sure" Krystal replied, she was fully awake now. Scarlett smiled at Krystal. "Great! I'll go pack some stuff and we can head off" Scarlett bolted upstairs and rummaged through her drawers grabbing everything that they needed. Krystal was dazed and confused about what just happened. Her mind was all messed up, questions began popping up. 'Where are we going?' she thought to herself.

Scarlett then cam down and clarified some things with Krystal. "We are just going to get something from the old mans creek." Scarlett said nonchalantly. Krystal nodded her head, she then proceeded to wear her shoes and head out, Scarlett trailing behind. "Where is this place?" Krystal asked. Scarlett pointed at the swamp, Krystal gulped. the swamp was surrounded by a dark aura it felt unwelcoming. Scarlett gestured for Krystal to follow, she was unwilling but she reluctantly followed behind Scarlett.

They arrived at Old Man's Creek not long after. "Dad!" Scarlett squealed. She dashed towards the old man sitting at the side of the lake. Krystal slowly followed behind Scarlett. "Hi, sir." Krystal greeted. The man turned towards her and smiled. "Are you my daughter's girlfriend?" The old man asked. Krystal was shocked at the questioned and shook her head. "N-no sir" she stuttered, her cheeks turned pink. Scarlett talked to her father for awhile. Then, she asked Krystal to come over. "I have a quest for both of you, I am old. So, I need you two to help me retrieve th Elder Potion from the witch at Mount Canibar" The old man stated. Scarlett nodded her head and so did Krystal. She was uncertain about what was about to unfold, and certainly it was interesting.

They gathered their things and headed south of where they were. Taking quick glances at the map every now and then to make sure they knew where they were going, ahead of them was a small village. "We should rest here and replenish our food and drink supply." Scarlett said. Krystal nodded her head and headed out to get some food with the money Scarlett's dad gave them. She bought some bread and water. "Here" Krystal said as she handed the things over to Scarlett. She thanked Krystal and they decided to rest at a nearby café. They chatted for a bit before heading out again.

"Hey, why don't you visit your mother?" Krystal asked. Scarlett could only sigh "Its...complicated" Krystal zipped her mouth, she knew she had hit a spot. It wasn't a nice one though. "Let's continue," Krystal said. They continued south and finally reach the mountain. At the foot of the mountain, they began their climb. At first it seemed normal, but then it turned south. They began hearing weird noises, such as cackling. Hysterical laughing and other things. Krystal was getting scared. Scarlett comforted the girl, their pace fastened as they wanted to get out of there as quick as possible. Things were quite rough, there was shadows appearing and creatures lurking in the dark. They didn't back off because they knew Scarlett's father needed it. Or so they thought. "Let's stop here and rest" Scarlett suggested as she sat down in front of a cave. Krystal nodded her head. she rested her head against the wall. A ringing sound started to pierce her ears, "Ah!"Krystal shouted in pain, she covered her ears and waited for the ringing noise to stop. The ringing noise was comprised of a high pitched scream and a bell. "Did you hear that?" Scarlett shook her head and looked at Krystal worriedly.

"I'm sorry, you just got here and you have to deal with this."Scarlett guiltily apologised. Krystal put her hand on her shoulder and muttered, "Its okay" to Scarlett. They decided to sleep there since the sun was setting and they were getting tired. Throughout their sleep whispers could be heard. They felt something watching them and it made Krystal uneasy, she peered at her surroundings only to see nothing. She thought the noise was just a figment of her imagination and that she was just tired.

She then drifted off to dreamland once again, she could barely catch a wink as the whispers were louder and now no longer whispers. It was like someone shouting at her but she didn't know what they were saying. Scarlett on the other hand was fine, she slept soundly and didn't know that Krystal was suffering right beside her.

Morning came and Krystal had dark eye bags. Her eyes were droopy which cause Scarlett to worry. "I'm...fine" Krystal said as she yawned. She rubbed her eyes and looked around her, she got up and began walking, dragging her legs. Scarlett followed along, but she was still concerned about her. "What happened last night?" Scarlett asked. "Uhm...nothing" Krystal lied. She felt bad for lying but she didn't want Scarlett to worry about her. Scarlett knew something was off with her but she didn't want to question it any further. The further they trekked up the mountain, the more Krystal felt like fainting. Her breathing was faster and she felt dizzy. She turned around to see shadows, but she thought she was hallucinating from not getting enough sleep. They were halfway up the mountain when Krystal closed her eyes and fell. She landed on the floor with a loud thud causing Scarlett to look behind, she jumped at the sight and rushed to her her friend. "Krystal!" She yelled. She checked her pulse and luckily there was still a pulse. She carried Krystal up a bit to a stone ledge where she could sit down and rest. She poured water on Krystal's face and began waiting for Krystal to come around, but she didn't know when Krystal would wake up.
