Chapter 7 - Tale 6: Hero of the Night Sky

There once was a village deep within the mountains of a strange foreign land, the people here resembled humans but with darker skin and unnatural hair colors. This land was sacred as none were allowed to come or leave without God's permission and that was the rule, but one day a child was born far out into the wilderness of this land its mother dying of an unknown sickness and its father missing, the people of this village took the child in but unbeknownst to them they had changed the very fate of this village for centuries to come.

The child was raised by a guard of the royal family and given the name Nexius, which meant Time, but due to his short stature and thin body he was commonly called Nexes, which stood for weak, Nexius had a mess of long black hair and emerald colored eyes but he wasn't physically strong nor all that talented, all he was able to do was draw fairly well and he always knew he was weaker not once did he believe himself higher than anyone and that was what caught the attention of the royal family's daughter, Jade. Jade has first taken an interest in him when he had participated in the village's tournament and he continued to fight even though he was severely outmatched. After the tournament, she decided to befriend him much to the dismay of others, and wasn't allowed to meet with him. Nexius noticed this and decided to talk with her at night and upon startling her at first they talked for hours on end before he left in the morning. After a few months of Jade and Alexius having the nightly meets they became quite close even where they both had an attraction to the other but due to their social statuses couldn't do anything about it. It wasn't until a strange sickness plagued the land and affected the princess quite horribly, but all those with black hair and green eyes weren't affected, including Nexius. After all, attempts to cure the villagers and the princess had failed the king decided to employ the black hairs to find the source of the sickness and quell it. He sent every able-bodied black hair to find it but only one of them returned, and his news was that the sickness came from the highest mountain peak but it was surrounded by beasts made from back ooze that killed the land and all of his group. When all hope was lost Nexius stood forward and said he would go but he wanted a reward if he completed his task, the hand of Jade in marriage. With a few audible complaints and most of the villagers laughing at how this boy who could never fight would dare to ask the king his daughter's hand in marriage. But to their surprise the king agreed, he knew of the two's nightly meets and thought that if anyone would be determined to do so it would be this boy in front of him. Nexius asked for nothing but leather armor, a spear, a sword, and 6 days of rations. Nexius was to set out the next day so he went up to the princess's room and told her of his quest, he left a note saying that if he didn't return within 3 days of her awakening then to come search for him.

As the sun rose in the sky Nexius set out for his quest determined to fix this sickness and marry Jade. after two days of traveling he came to the bottom of the mountain, the trees were pitch black and withered it was almost as if the only thing keeping them standing was the dense fog that surrounded the area. As Nexius continued forward beasts came and smelled around but he had a plan he decided to cover himself in the black ooze that dripped from the trees and despite its horrible smell and the itching feeling as if it were crawling upon his skin it worked as the beasts passed him by and continued their patrol. Upon hours and hours of hiking up the mountainside, scrambling up the cliffs he reached the peak by sunset. laying there in the middle of a hole in the mountainside was a pool of red liquid and hanging from the ceiling was what appeared to be a piece of a heart still faintly beating, the walls decorated with gemstones seeming as if someone had haphazardly thrown them at the wall and they stuck. Upon reaching here his leather armor was in tatters and his spear broken all he had left was the sword his adoptive mother had given him. He pierced the blade into the beating mound of flesh and immediately was racked with pain unlike anything he had ever felt, the "heart" let out a terrible screech which caused Nexius's eardrums to bleed but he sunk his blade deeper into the flesh, now feeling that his own heart was being pierced he saw the hear fall into the pool causing it to go pitch black much like the substance covering the trees and what the beasts down the mountain were made of. He stumbled over to the pool and saw its surface writhing as if it were alive and what happened next stunned him. He was a face slowly being created from the pool, a humanoid face struggling as if trying to keep its face kept together, and then it spoke.

"You would dare harm me, descendant?" It spoke in a deep voice that shook the very cliff they stood on. "You are weak you cannot kill me with your imperfect blood. MINE IS PURE!" It shouted as the mountainside shook once more causing boulders and trees to fall off and sink into the murky white abyss below.

"I won't let you hurt any more of my people demon!" Nexius shouted as he sunk his blade into the goo but it only sank disappearing into the liquid.

"So there are people near here? That must be what awoke my heart. I guess I'll send my forces to attack!" It cackled as Nexius heard the sounds of the beasts from the mountain howl and run into the distance.

"If I kill you I can stop them." He smirked as he sunk his hand into the liquid reaching for his sword but the liquid unlike the ooze from the trees stung his skin as if it was trying to devour his very being.

"You cannot harm me fool! I am a being of PURE ESSENCE, your WEAK essence cannot harm mine!" It cackled more and even more, noises grew distant as Nexius began to lose hope but then he noticed something, on his hand where the ooze had been there was nothing it was almost as if he had absorbed the liquid.

"That's where you're wrong beast! I can harm you!" He shouted in triumph and smiled sadly before jumping completely into the liquid. As his whole body stung as if bees were constantly attacking his very soul.

The beast smiled thinking it had won but realized its body was being absorbed by the person inside of it and it began to panic." WHAT ARE YOU DOING!? GET OUT OF ME!" It struggled, trying to force Nexius out of its body but it was too late Nexius had completely absorbed the liquid.

Nexius smiled before his body racked with pain once again and he heard the creature's voice inside his head. [IF I CAN'T SURVIVE THEN I'LL TAKE YOU WITH ME!!]

As Nexius felt a creeping sensation spreading from his heart to the rest of his body he stumbled into the wall and as black blood began to seep from wounds opening sporadically across his body. he slid down against the wall as he felt his back explode and with his last breath, he thought while smiling, [I'm sorry].

Back at the village, they were being marauded by the beasts and the seeping blackness which killed everything in its path. Until they noticed that as the first few stars were noticeable in the sky a loud boom echoes from the peak of the mountain and all the beasts melted and the black ooze dissipating into mist even the fog rose and vanished. Within the following night, the strange sickness vanished from the village. and the princess awoke the next day. Immediately she heard the news of Nexius' quest and read the note so she patiently waited for him to return. One day after the other but at no sign of him by the third day she went out with a search party hoping the best that their hero, their savior was still alive just resting. But upon reaching the peak they saw a gruesome sight. an empty cave lit by the morning sun a crevice in the middle of the room as if it had once held a liquid and in the center a dried husk of what seemed to be a very large heart, and laying against the wall with a smile across his face was Nexius. His dried blood caked the floor of the cavern and across the cavern wall behind him, pitch-black blood had dried forming what appeared to be wings with the various gemstones sprinkled between the void causing imagery much like that of a night sky. Nexius was given a burial but this time it was a special ritual as to uphold the honor he had to the end of his life. As his body was settled onto a stone plate gently with the remains of his blade resting on his chest. The villagers started telling of their encounters with him in the past as a village elder slowly walked towards the body.

"He had always helped me whenever I needed help moving heavy objects even though he wasn't that strong himself." Spoke an eldery man, followed by a younger man and his family.

"He was a brilliant painter and his artworks will remain on our walls as long as I live."

"He was an amazing playmate he was like a big brother." Said a child. As the stories continued the Elder finally reached the body and with a wave of her hand the crowd quieted.

"And he was the perfect son that I could've asked for." She whispered before she set the fire alight allowing the body to be sent to the heavens through ash so that he could live peacefully among the gods. As the body dissapeared into the flames the crowd looked back towards the elder as she beckoned the royal family to describe his end.

"As of today the man known as Nexius is no more instead he shall be remembered by the name Alesius Onrae *, as he left at the brink of day and left us at the start of night and in his wake he left wings full of starlight." She called out to the crowd which was greeted with smiles and agreement. From that day onward a tale was spread through the people of Alesius Onrae, The hero of the Night-sky.

*in the language, Kaelic, Ales means hero and ius mean of, meanwhile Onrae meand Night-time and so putting them together means Hero of the Night or Night-sky
