Chapter 10 - Chapter 9- The New Days

2673 Words

Point of View (Jenna)

After work, Leah and Azariah convinced us to go to the gym with them since they couldn't in the morning. Leah kept talking about how she was gonna get a free day off of work or something. While we were on the treadmills, The big man stopped by, "I've been thinking about the food thing. I need all of you to tell everyone."

"Why us?" I asked.

"I don't really want to. Besides, this is your guys' thing, not mine."

"That's a dumb reason," Azariah grumbled.

"Ever since the announcer quit, it's just been so boring doing announcements. There's no special announcement time anymore."

"You do special announcements every day," Azariah point out.

"But they aren't special anymore," he exclaimed, throwing his arms up, "If you don't do it I'll tell everyone that... you don't like them!"

Leah gasped, "You wouldn't dare!"

"I totally would," he threatened, putting his hands on his hips. But then he gave up, "Fine, but, I'd like to just say that it'd look so much better for you to be saying it. I'm specifically talking about you, Leah, but any of you could do it. Not just Leah."

After a moment, Leah said, "Ok... I'll do it."

I shook my head, "Leah, that's the worst idea you've ever had. I hope you take that back."

"I don't know, it sounds like a great idea," Azariah said, "It sounds like a great opportunity."

Point of View Change (Leah)

When we got home, we finished moving the boxes into the other apartment. When I found the room we were all gonna move into, I found this weird door. It was this set of double doors except, when I pull on them, they don't do anything. Then I found this crack in between the two doors. I tried to wiggle through them and it worked. The door opened and I closed them behind me, "Is this a bathroom? Eh, whatever." I looked at the corner and said, "Huh, nice corner you got there. It looks 90 degrees and everything. Wait, why am I complimenting a tiny room? Oh ya, I'm stressed out." I sat down, "I started to think about poetry that went along with this. I guess poetry just runs in the family or something. Two problems like a million, a majestic beautiful life turned bleak in an instance. Woah... I suck at poetry." I curled up in a corner.

Then the door opened, "Oh, there you are, Leah. Why are you in the closet?"

I struggled to see who it was, "Hey, Azariah. Is that what this is? I thought it was the bathroom, but then I couldn't find the toilet..."

"Are you ok?"

"Ya, I just have a lot to think about and this looked like a pretty cool corner. Why is it that this dark closet is making me feel better?"

Azariah squeezed into the closet with me, "What is it?"

"I don't know... I just don't understand all of this. I mean, why does Alexa have to be on Earth? Can't she just be here... with me?"

"You love her, don't you?"

"What? No way," I replied, shaking my head, "I like her, but that's just because she's cute. She's just super compatible with everyone. Plus, she's like everyone's type."

Azariah laughed, "Is everyone your name now?"

"Well, it's not just that. There's also the thing with the superpowers! I'm cupid and you're this super powerful person... I don't get it."

"Ya... but, we deserve it."

"No, I didn't mean it like that. Sorry... I meant that you're the successor of someone so powerful. It's just not fair... to anyone," I explained, looking at the ground."

"It's fine. You wanna try something? I call it outside thinking. You say something negative about a situation and I'll say something positive. Let's start with something easy. The announcement."

"They might asked me a lot of questions," I responded.

"You'll make more friends."

"They won't like me."

"You still have us," Azariah said, putting her arm around my shoulders.

"They might just be trying to use me to get what they want."

"We won't let that happen."

"The fame will get to me," I responded. Azariah stifled a laugh. "What?" I asked, turning my head to face her.

She shook her head, still laughing, "Sorry, that just- it doesn't matter. I'll stop you, trust me."

I ndoded, "I do."

"Good. Is that all?"

"Yes. Next one."

"Ok. Alexa."

"What about her?" I asked, tilting my eyebrows.

"You date her. Bad things about that."

"Well..." I started, trying to imagine what would happen, "She wouldn't focus on herself and her own well-being."

"You could do that."

I shook my head, "I don't know her enough."

"Get to know her, then."

"I can't. She doesn't know who she is yet and I still need to figure out myself, too."

"Oh... ok."

Then I thought of something, "Oh, if I do the announcement, I might be forced to teach everyone how to use their powers."

"Well, I could always help you with that. Or I could do it for you."

"But you don't know how to use your powers, you just black out."

"You could teach us first. And, you could use them to get favors. The people you help, I mean. Maybe you could get one of them to convince The big man to give you a free day," Azariah smiled, nudging me in the shoulder.

I nodded, "Ya, I guess."

"Let's go help them unpack."

"Eh, I'll stay here for a while. I still wanna think for a little bit."

"Really? You're gonna sit here, in a dark closet, and... think?"

I shrugged my shoulders, "I don't know... I kind of like it here."

Azariah rolled her eyes, "Leah, you don't have to stay in the closet anymore, we all know you like girls already."

"What?"

"Whatever, just... come on, let's go," she said, holding out her hand. I took it and we went into the kitchen, which is basically useless now.

I marched into the room and declared loudly, "I'm gonna tell the angels about the powers. I've decided I'll use my favors to get a free day."

"Ya, about that, I've been meaning to ask about that," Jenna said.

"You seriously don't know what they are?" I asked, leaning forward over the kitchen island. Jenna shook her head. "Well, I'll explain, I guess. It's something The big man has been promising me since day one."

"You still haven't-whatever, I'm too invested in this. Why has he been promising you this?" Jenna asked, very interested.

I smirked, folding my arms over my tummy, "Well, I'm his spy in exchange for free days. You know, the promise of not having to work every single day until I die. Something like that."

"Tell us the story!" Jenna exclaimed, leaning against the counter now, too.

Mordecai spoke up, "We still need to pack."

"Shhhh! The stories starting, I can feel it."

I smiled, starting to tell the story, "Ok..."

It was a normal day in heaven and I felt just like a cool businesswoman or something. Anyway, I was at work and then I saw this girl. She was the new kid who had just transferred in that day. She was twitching and smiling, and, at first, I thought she was in danger. So, I asked her, "Are you ok?"

She smiled even more and responded, "Yep." So, being the mature and fearless angel, I ran to headquarters as fast as I could. I walked in his office, realizing I could probably make a job out of this.

So, I told him, "I'm gonna make a deal with you."

He looked at me, surprised, "Leah, I wish you didn't barge in so much. Did you not see the occupied sign on the door? I'm sorry, Ariel, but I don't she's gonna leave. You can stay if you want."

"Ok.. I'll just come tomorrow," Ariel said, walking out the door.

I smiled, sitting down, "Anyway, something weird just happened. So, I figured i could just look over the records department for you in return, you can let me have a day off."

He shook his head, "I can't do that... what do you mean weird?"

"I have intel on a possible demon. I won't tell you unless we make this deal," I replied, putting my hands on my hips.

"Fine, deal. Tell me where they are, quickly!" We shook hands and he disappeared. The angel wasn't there the next day, so, whenever I get bored, I walk around and check on everyone. I've never gotten that free day.

"That was really short," Jenna commented.

Mordecai quickly turned to Jenna, "Were you trying to get out of work?!"

"Yes. Obviously. I don't want to unpack and I'll do anything to delay the inevitable. Who wants to never unpack our stuff?" Jenna asked, grinning. Azariah's hand shot straight up, but after she realized that Mordecai and I hadn't, she put hers back down.

After we painstakingly unpacked, I asked Jenna, "Don't you have stories about Mordecai and you?"

She nodded, "Ya, he was so different, though."

"Wait, so basically, a big part of the fight against heaven and heck is the part with the guardians and the dark hearts, right?" I asked, sitting down.

"I guess... I hadn't thought about it like that."

Mordecai shook his head, "No, it's like this. Heaven fights to make the dark hearts angels and make Earth a better place. Then heck wants the opposite."

"Then which side are the dark hearts on?" I asked, smiling.

"Before Earth was created, The Nothingness created The Dark Heart Realm and the dark hearts to balance out the universe," Mordecai explained, "Then, when the angels came to be, The big man made sure no dark heart went without a guardian."

"Oh, that's pretty neat," Jenna responded, "I didn't know that. Oh, you should tell the story about how you met all of your past guardians."

Mordecai smiled, nodding his head, "Ok, good idea."

It was pretty hard to be me back then. I was kind of the Dark Heart Realm. I assume it's Shadrack or one of the others now. But, anyway, most of the time, they wouldn't last much longer than a night. I'm not sure what would happen to them after they left, though. I stood under a streetlight that used to be a lantern. But, whenever they stepped into the light, they died. Then, there it was, the usual gust of wind. I always took advantage of having a home turf advantage. After a moment, I turned around as the girl was messing with her weird crop top thing with long sleeves. It was white, and, I remember thinking it was so annoying. As she slid down the hill, I thought back to all my past guardians.

I turned around, "No you!" I yelled. I was in my memories all of a sudden. My past guardian was telling me to shut up.

He looked confused, "I'm your guardian. So, you have to do what I tell you to." I was talking to my guardian through the gap between Earth and The Dark Heart Realm.

After a while of him going to The Dark Heart Realm and just standing on the bridge, I asked him, "Why do you always stand up there?"

He answered, "I can't move."

"Oh," I said, stepping out of the light. I walked up to the bridge, watching his scared little eyes grow bigger and bigger with fear. "So, it's not you. He told me about your guys' little ace up your sleeves. It can't be you, though... so who is it?" I asked, looking in his eyes for the answer. But he didn't know, so I put my hand on his forehead and he disappeared in the blink of an eye. As I turned around, I said to myself, "Wonder why he's saving it for later. That'll be fun..."

A.N- This is when Jenna and Mordecai meet. I'm gonna skip to the important part. If you want to read it again, it's in chapter 8.

After I realized Jenna didn't die when she stepped into the light, I lost it. My eyes went red and I went for the kill. When I could see again, I was on my knees and there was a splotch of blue and aqua on my shirt. Then I found out Jenna was the ace up their sleeve. She was really nice about me trying to kill her and we became best friends despite half of me wanting to kill her. I was there for everything in her life. When she thought she would be single her whole life, when she asked out her crush, and when she had her first kiss. When she left, Shadrack jumped down from his trees.

"I'm surprised she didn't find out what your name is. Tell me, when are you two making friendship bracelets? You know what, maybe Stupidity would want to join you. Should we go ask them, because I'm sure they'll say yes. Or are you too scared of rejection?" Shadrack teased.

I rolled my eyes, "Could you, like, for one second, stop being so rude? I could so easily threaten you! And, you walk on all fours sometimes. I could tell literally anyone that and they'd agree with me when I say that you're a weirdo and you have no right to judge anyone else. And, it doesn't make you look cool at all. You know that, right?"

"You're so weak, Mordecai. You could be scaring your guardian, too. Honestly, it's so fun being the scariest thing to my guardian."

"You should let him in," I said, looking down at my suit. It was so colorful now, "You should let me meet him."

"EW. That's gross. Zadkiel is such a stupid nerd! By the way, Zadkiel isn't actually a him, so, jokes on you. It's they/them."

I laughed, "Oh, I have another thing, you were the one who got headaches two weeks after he stood up to you."

"Wait, no! Keep going, I wanna see what my mom's dark heart said about them," I exclaimed, jumping up and down.

I rolled my eyes, "What about Zadkiel's friends? Are they together?"

"I'M NOT GONNA DISCUSS THIS WITH YOU! YES, I'M ABSOLUTELY SURE, but I'm not gonna discuss this with you! Am I really the only one who isn't compromised?" he asked, groaning.

"Don't you think Zadkiel's had enough of your crap? He's been your guardian since he was SEVEN."

"What, I like to play with my prey," he responded, shrugging his shoulders.

"You didn't play with the last one for this long, though," I commented, watching him stomp away.

"So, how many guardians have you had?" Jenna asked, swinging her legs back and forth.

"I don't know. After a while, I just stopped counting," Mordecai responded, shrugging.

"What about Shadrack?" I asked, smiling.

"Just four," he responded, holding up four fingers, "But he's not to be trifled with. He terrorizes his guardian until they give up. He's not someone to mess with."

"Woah, that's pretty cool. Can't wait till I meet him!" Jenna exclaimed, "It's always cool to meet new people, I guess. And, he's like a relative of Leah's, too."

"Wait, really?!" I asked, smiling really wide.

"I-I guess," Mordecai replied slowly.

I started jumping up and down, "I have relatives! I never thought I'd have one. YES!!!"

"What do you mean? You have parents already," Azariah said, laughing.

I nodded, "Ya, but I never had grandparents. My parents don't have siblings or anything. So I guess Shadrack is like my long lost grandad or something."

"Huh, I guess so. That's pretty cool," Azariah replied, punching me in the shoulder, "Congrats!"

"Let's go on a walk. We've done so much today and we definitely could use a break from all of the work," I said, smiling.
