(Azariah's POV)
I opened my eyes, looking at the ceiling of my bedroom. Last night, I went to the bedroom they told me was mine and I fell asleep there. It took a while to, though, since it hadn't felt like it'd been a day yet. I walked out of my bedroom to find that there was a smell coming from the kitchen. My mom never made food for me before, so what was that smell and why did it smell so good?
When I walked in, Abel turned to me from the place he was standing at in the kitchen, "Azariah! We made breakfast! Pancakes!" He held up a pancake with his spatula, smiling really wide.
Then Ithuriel yelled, "Oh! Azariah, can you help me make pancakes? Abel couldn't cook to save his life! You NEED to come help me cook."
He frowned, "And take away my spatula?!"
I laughed, "Ya, could I get dressed first?"
She shook her head, "No, work doesn't stop so you can get dressed... NOT! Just hurry up!' I went to my room, a smile stuck on my face. Then I realized I didn't have clothes here. I opened the drawers, hoping I'd find clothes in there. I opened them to find a dress, well, a whole bunch, actually. All white, too. Then I remembered that everyone had white dresses. I guess I hadn't noticed, but even Domiel was wearing a white tuxedo with a white button-up. But for some reason, Abel just wears a white button-up.
I walked back into the kitchen, "Hey, Ithuriel, I'm back. How do I look?" I asked Ithuriel as I put my arms out to show her my outfit.
She smiled really wide, "You look wonderful!"
After a while, Abel suddenly exclaimed, "Woah! Look at the time, we need to hurry up and get to work." We walked to our jobs and eventually even I had to part with Ithuriel, who works in a different part of records.
"How's your day been so far? I bet you had a nice morning with your new parents. Is it weird having completely new parents all of a sudden?" Leah asked, leaning back in her chair.
I leaned back in my chair, too, "I don't really know. I don't think I've ever really had parents."
"Huh, so you were homeless?"
I shook my head, "Nope, I just didn't really like my parents. They weren't... parents, I don't think. I wouldn't know."
"Oh, well, now you have great parents. Let's just get to work. We're so behind. We'll definitely do so much work today. Totally."
I laughed, "Totally."
Then a blaring noice caught me by surprise. I shot forward, hoping Leah would quickly explain. She slightly smiled, "Ya... we're gonna have to fight demons..."
"How?!"
"There's swords, we'll be fine," she replied, failing to comfort me.
Then a voice on the intercom said, "Everyone, be ready for anything, they really stepped it up this time. Good l-"
Leah laughed, "Don't worry, he always does that... Silly intercom dude, just... cutting himself off..." I could see she was lying, though, because she looked so sad and she just looked at the ground. We followed everyone to this big rack of swords. I grabbed one just as I saw this thing that looked like the literal embodiment of darkness. Great... I'll just kill someone. Easy peasy. I squinted my eyes, glaring into their soul. Then I kind of just blanked out. Easy peasy, I guess.
Point of View Change (Leah)
I wasn't really that worried about what Azariah was doing. However, after a while, I could see a pile start to grow right in the corner of my eye. I wasn't sure how she was doing so well, but I decided to just go with it.
I shrugged as I took swing after swing, killing demon after demon. I guess Azariah just has beginner's luck. Then a new voice came on the speakers and said, "The war has been won. Get back to your jobs." I looked over to Azariah, seeing her on the floor.
I ran over to her, lifting her head up off the floor, "Azariah, wake up!"
She slowly opened her eyes and for a moment, they were bright yellow, "Ya, we won, but they'll be back and I doubt that it'll get easier as time goes on." I lifted her up by the hand and we went back to our jobs. Azariah was special somehow, but I don't know how yet. We worked really hard after that, but we ended up making a game out of it, so it was really fun. When the workday was over, I decided to make a pit stop. After dropping off Azariah, of course. I was sincerely worried that she'd get hurt or hurt someone else.
I entered the office I was instructed to and I said, "Sir, something happened today while we were fighting off the demons. By the way, it's a shame what happened to the announcer dude. All of Heaven will mourn him. Anyway, back to the thing about the war. Azariah's eyes... they were bright yellow for a second after she fainted from the battle." I had a serious look on my face, favoring my official business voice because it made me sound like a snitch. That sounds like a good thing, right?
"Leah, you do know that I can't actually give you a free pass from work, right?" the big man asked me.
I shook my head in disappointment, "No, darn it! I'll never be a field angel!" All of my hard work was useless, I know that now.
"That's weird, though. I didn't think that one of my new angels would be the first..."
I freaked out, "To what?! To get a free day?! Is Azariah getting a free day? This isn't fair! Please don't do th-"
"NO, not that. Azariah was the first to discover their power. You really though that I'd only give angels swords as a defense? Every angel, new, ancient, or even as old as time has the ability to defeat a common demon in the blink of an eye. This being a secret has been the only thing keeping us from being wiped out," he explained, pacing the room.
I thought about it for a moment, "Wait, so why haven't you told anyone? Wouldn't it just make us stronger? Which is good... right?"
"Well, because it's nearly impossible to find your power. If an angel knew it existed, then they wouldn't be able to find it. They have to stumble upon it," he replied, foldinghis hands over each other.
"What about me? Don't I have to stumble upon it?" I asked, scared about what he would say next. I went home, knowing my parents would be able to cheer me up.
"Mom? Dad? Where are you guys?" I called out, walking into the apartment. My parents don't do well with settling in.
Then, I heard someone walk into the hallway, "Oh, hey Leah! I'm so glad you're ok! Anyway, that was pretty scary, huh?" Zadkiel didn't show it, but they were definitely worried.
I nodded, "Ya, I talked to The big man today. It didn't go too well... I can't tell you, though, free days are at stake here. I'm not supposed to tell anyone..." I explained, sitting on the couch.
"Well, I won't ask, then... I know how much you care quote quote get out of work days. But, is there anything you can tell me?"
"First, they aren't fake," I said, sitting up completely straight to show how serious I was, "He told me himself. Second, I guess I can tell you why. Azariah, the new kid, passed out after the battle. When she woke up, her eyes turned bright yellow for a second."
"Oh, huh... then you probably can't tell me what he said."
"Nope... I can't," I whined, collapsing on the couch, "But I wanna so bad! It's such an awesome secret!"
"Well, I'll talk to him later. I have something else I need to ask him about anyway..."
"Woah, suspicious!" I exclaimed, sitting back up, "Just don't die, dad wouldn't be able to handle me!"
"Why would I die?" they asked, smiling.
I laughed, "Because, you're being so mysterious! Isn't that how it always ends? Their loved one starts acting weird and then they find out that it's actually just a demon that's trying to kill them."
Zadkiel started laughing, too, "I'm not a demon!" They hit me with a pillow and I quickly grabbed one, hitting them back. Then the door opened and Domiel, my dad, walked through the door. My parents had their mushy romantic moment and then my dad walked over to hug me.
They hugged me super tight, "Leah, I'm so glad you're safe!"
"Thanks. The new kid's eyes glowed today after the battle. She fainted, so I had to go to headquarters to tell The big man about it."
Domiel looked at mom all weird like and asked, "Oh ya, are you gonna ask him about the one thing?"
Zadkiel quickly nodded, "Ya, I'm gonna go tomorrow. Come on, let's make supper."
"Wait, why do we have to eat food again?" I asked for the millionth time.
"This again?" Domiel asked, "Angels have special food that helps with their sk-"
But I didn't let them finish, "The food!" I ran out the door, but then I realized I shouldn't tell him until I know for sure. I walked back in, "I changed my mind. Ha."
"Are you ok, Leah?" Zadkiel asked, tilting their head in confusion.
"Ya... I just won't be eating for a while. It's an experiment!"
"Why?"
"Can't tell. Sorry, it's a secret."
"Leah! You're supposed to not be bottling things up! We've talked about this? Don't you remember?" Domiel asked, putting their hands on their hips.
I smiled really wide, "If I didn't bottle things up, it'd be on the floor! Just like jalapenos... you HAVE to bottle them up. If you didn't, they'd be on the floor." They both visibly sighed, looking way more than slightly annoyed.
