Chapter 38 - Long Summer

Justine's POV:

Days passed by and the summer vacation was almost over, but Damon's condition didn't improve at all…

I tried to talk to him many times since the vacation started, but my words wouldn't reach him, as if he is in another world further away from the world I am living in.

The shock he received after learning about his remaining family death has been too hard for him that he didn't even utter a word that I thought we went mute from the shock.

Damon would stay day and night curled in his futon at the corner of the room as a puppy that lost its home.

He would starve himself for days, so I had to feed him with the spoon myself and clean after the food spilling from his mouth.

Every day passed with great difficulty that I thought that this summer was particularly longer than all the previous summers.

The thought of giving up on him has crossed my mind many times, but then I would come around and stay by his. When I remember how much he helped me in studying and how patient he was with all me in spite of bothering him with my own studies the whole time.

I would get sad whenever I look at how Damon turned out to be; he was such a proud and responsible person before, he was always bright and brilliant. But now his face darkened and his eyes lost its sparkles, he became completely lifeless.

My sadness for Damon would turn into frustration when I think of what happened to his family, I would curse the world and blame it for what happened to Damon…

Few days are left till school starts again and everyone comes back from their countries, I was getting desperate as Damon's condition didn't improve at all.

After contemplating it thoroughly for a long time, I have decided to go for the principal and ask for his help since he knew all about Damon's childhood.

I have tried everything I could try but nothing worked so far, seeking the principal's help was the only thing left to do, I thought that the principal got the key to solve this problem.

I decided to stay optimistic and hold on to my hopes tightly. I grabbed a casual dress from the wardrobe and wore it in the bathroom, then went to the principal in a hurry.

It was midday, the school is usually bustling with students at this time of the day, but all students are spending their time catching up with their families right now, so no one was in the school except some of the working stuff.

As I was walking down the quiet corridors of the school, I saw my reflection in one of the windows, then I realized that my hair was a mess.

I was in such a hurry that I forgot to comb my hair, so I tried to make it look less messy with my hands.

I could have gone back to my room and combed my hair neatly. But helping Damon was my first priority so I kept on my way to the principal without caring about my appearance.

I am now standing in front of the principal's door, I took a big breath in and let it out to calm myself, then I knocked gently on the door twice.

"Get in…" the principal says

I wrap my hand around the doorknob and swirl it slowly then I push the door and get into the room.

"Justine?!"

,

"It's a rare sight seeing you here in the school at this Time of year," the principal says carefreely.

As soon as I got into the room I couldn't keep my calm anymore my expression became so dreadful that the principal broke a sweat as soon as he noticed it.

After I told him everything that happened to Damon, he looked at me and said with a serious yet sad tone,

"You can go back to your room, I will send someone to see him right away"

Then he picked his phone and started looking through his contacts, so I excused myself and went back to the room with my head dangling to the ground all depressed.

I was waiting for help in the room with Damon awake beside me, I was looking at him but he was staring aimlessly at the wall…

When I heard the door knocking I got up and ran fast to the door that I almost tripped over.

To my surprise when I opened the door, I found that it was the school nurse, Reselda, who was knocking on the door.

As soon as I opened the door, the nurse pushed the door and busted into the room to look at Damon.

The way she gently looked after him as she was checking his condition seemed like a mother taking care of her own son.

After she was done with the checkup she turned towards then and looked at my face, then she would put her head down and say,

"Damon is showing early signs of autism"
