Chapter 12 - Chapter 1 [Hope Anew] (Page 6)

"About time you came Sora and River, and help would be appreciated!" She called out ducking under a great sword and jabbing someone in the leg. Inside the walls especially in the suburbs and crowded areas with very low security things like this happen often. There are many other outposts like ours who clash to steal the resources and gear of others.

Most of our group consists of runaways and orphans, except me and Sora who had families to go back to. Gale was surprisingly from a noble family which she ran away from, and was skilled with the blades she had. Grusk was a strong Orc who left his chieftain family to his own way of life, he had the strength of a gorilla and skin of metal. Yet as strong as he was he was slow and clumsy, the twins Ruby and Emerald were skilled human archers.

Capable of making traps from scraps and lastly Shadow, he isn't very good with weapons. Although he is clever with words and a skilled stealer and cheater, he is often hiding and is always very calm. Lastly there is stargazer, she can't fight but is very skilled in crafting and thinking of plans. She is shy, does not talk much and likes to stay out of trouble, yet she often gets into trouble regardless how she tries to avoid it.

The battles between groups was a common sight for injuries and broken bones. The group attacking us was mostly relying on numbers instead of skill or strategy and consists of stone heads. Me and Sora looked at each other then jumped into the fray. We hacked our way through the opponents group relying on surprise, eventually we ran out of it but powered our way beside our friends.

I don't know how long we were at it for, at last after being held back for so long, they retreated. We watch them drag each other away, seems like our skill is stronger than their numbers. Once they were gone there was a visible release of tension. First we went to fix up the gate which they broke down, during that time we chatted with each other and shared stories. During this time I felt as if I could forget about what happened to my mother.

The gate was repaired just as it was noon and the sun was right above us glaring downwards onto us. We sat down outside our base eating and drinking, once done we went in, the fabric parted to let us into the cooler inside. It was not great but its better than nothing, we had a fireplace, bookshelves filled up, beds, chairs, tables and anything you can expect to find in a comfy house.
