Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

It was a hot summer day in the bustling city of New York. The daily businesses were getting themselves ready for another busy day of work. Shipments of food, essentials and other necessities were being processed and delivered to their certain locations. And as for the many employees and business owners, they were busy preparing themselves for another hectic day of tourists walking into their business buying an endless supply of souvenirs for their loved ones. However for 20 year old Roxie Rodriguez; every morning was about as normal as any other day.

Every day was always the same for Roxie. Her alarm would go off at exactly 7:15, take a nice hot shower in the morning, get dressed in her usual work attire which was usually jeans and an old college T-shirt, put her long curly hair in a low bun, grab something to eat for breakfast and then leave her apartment at 7:25 so she could catch the 8 AM subway for her job at the NYU student library. It had been a couple of years since Roxie, along with her best friend Cassie; had graduated from NYU and so far the two girls have had been enjoying most of their time working at their low income jobs. Life was great, for the most part, but on some days it was dull. Roxie had her job as a book checker for the library while Cassie was an intern at a little independent recording studio in Downtown Manhattan. It was exactly what both girls wanted after college. It wasn't until about a year ago, Roxie had the sudden urge to take the steps of expanding her career of becoming an author.

Roxie's dream was always to become an author and of course with the help Cassie and the girls' next door neighbors Kyle and Garrett; Roxie made the courageous decision to have her stories uploading on a website for up and coming authors. So far the website was a nice tool to let Roxie show off her creative writing skills. People from all over the world would read her stories and leave kind comments. However there was one particular comment that caught Roxie's eye and that comment was from someone by the name of Fifth Avenue Boy. For the past several weeks Roxie and Fifth Avenue Boy have been talking to each other about pretty much everything regarding their jobs to the type of person they want to be in the future.

By the time Roxie got the student library; it was already 8:15 and Roxie was about to start a long day at work. That morning Roxie brought herself some coffee and pastries for herself and Garrett; who also happened to be Roxie's co-worker at the library that summer.

"Good morning Garrett; how has your morning been so far today?" Roxie asked Garrett as she handed him his coffee and pastry.

"Eh; I can't complain much anymore. Business is still the same here because I'm stuck with a bunch of student fees which has forced me to get a summer job while I could be doing something else than just stacking up books on these old shelves every single week." Garrett complained.

"Oh, come on; working here isn't all that bad. There has to be at least one good thing you have got to like about this job." Roxie said.

"There is and it's just about to enter right now." Garrett stated. Roxie turned around and saw three blonde college cheerleaders walking towards them.

"Oh boy; this is going to be very entertaining." Roxie giggled under her breath.

"Excuse me; do you know where we could find the latest young adult novels?" one of the girls asked. All of a sudden, Garrett just froze and stared dumbfoundedly at all three cheerleaders.

"Sure; all of the young adult novels are on shelves 401 through 411 on the left," Roxie replied. The cheerleaders then walked away and giggled at Garrett. "You seriously need to get out more my friend." Roxie smiled.

"Well; yeah I could be if it wasn't for this stupid job. Besides; aren't you almost leaving soon for your little 3 month vacation to the UK?"

"Yeah and I already told you that it's not a vacation. It's actually more of a 3 month business trip." Roxie reminded him.

"You call looking for a publisher a business trip? Now; that is just cruel." Garrett chuckled.

"Yes; and besides the cruel part for you is that I get to go on this adventure while you and Cassie get to work together while I'm gone." Roxie smiled.

"God, don't remind me about that, you know how much I do not like hanging out, let alone work along side your roommate Cassie. I'm sorry, but she really annoys me with her constantly singing every single time she sees me." Garrett groaned. "Not to mention I would rather have you chosen Kyle instead of Cassie to replace you for your job." he added.

"Hey; Cassie was gladly to take my job here at the library. The recording studio that Cassie is interning at is not getting that much business right now and as for her dream of becoming a singer-songwriter; she is very close to making that career a reality. So I suggest that you at least treat her with some respect while I'm in the UK; ok?"

"Fine, but if Cassie starts to bother me in the first month, I'm filing a complaint to Martha." Garrett promised. Roxie just laughed and went to go put some books back on their shelves. Once Roxie was done with putting the books away, she started to walk around the library to see if there was anything else she could do while she was waiting for another task at work. So far she couldn't see anything for her to do, so Roxie walked to the back of the library. Once Roxie had made it to the back of the library; she made a left and went to one of the little nooks and sat in her favorite spot to admire the view outside the window.

This particular spot was Roxie's favorite spot for her to either write her stories, read and just daydream. The nook had a beautiful view of the campus and the city, making the spot picturesque and calming for Roxie. Luckily for Roxie not a lot of the library's employees and managers came to the back of the library so Roxie could stay in her little nook for hours on end. Also some of the nooks had computers installed in them so it was easy for Roxie to access her stories online to edit and type. For Roxie; writing was the only enjoyment in life. Despite having graduating from college, a great group of friends, and a part time job; Roxie knew deep down in her heart that she was meant to be something better than what she was doing in her life right now. In fact it was another main reason why Roxie decided to upload her stories onto the Internet. At first Roxie was a bit hesitant, since she had heard of the crazy rumors of companies or people stealing stories to make money off of them for themselves. However, after getting some convincing from her friends; Roxie found the courage to share her God given talents.

Now as of recently Roxie was getting ready for a 3 month trip to the UK, specifically London, England. Roxie felt in her heart that she would have an immense amount of success internationally than domestically because after having little to no success in finding a reasonable publisher in New York; Roxie felt that she needed to look beyond her current setting and not be afraid to spread her wings in order to make her dreams a reality. The problem was Roxie still had some doubts and hesitations about her trip to the UK since none of Roxie's friends knew the actual reason why Roxie was going to the UK in the first place.
