Chapter 18 - Beginning

[System information: Devourers - Explanation following: Devourers are beings chosen by beings standing above every human. Those who have been selected and passed the trial must fulfill a certain mission...]

'Ohh, so that was what that trial last month was about huh.. I have to fulfill a mission? What is it about?'

He continued reading the text that appeared in front of him.

[...Completing that mission will be rewarded highly. Failing however will result in permanent vanishment of one's soul.]

'Perma death huh.. Doesn't sound too bad actually. I've died twice already anyways. Also what kind of reward could it be? It's not telling me anything about it. Who knows if this is actually true?' He was skeptical.

The following information given by the system was just a short summary about Devourers. What they are - and what they're capable of. Eguru was fascinated as he read through all of that and finally understood why he was revived. He also knew that something powerful was slumbering within his body.

Unfortunately he didn't know it also was quite dangerous.

Finishing up he fell asleep in just a few seconds.

At around midnight Verzo had a talk with Fabio and then sneaked out of the house with him. He planned on bringing him to where he came from. Of course he had to stay hidden though. Guards were still searching for him actively. The same case was with Fabio.

The two of them still were enemies and no one would forget about that fact. Being on friendly terms was something impossible. "If you get caught by the guards it it's not going to be my problem."

Verzo mumbled in a hurry.

The only reasons Verzo didn't kill this man was because he didn't feel like it. Originally he wanted to do so because there was a high bounty for that man's head but he let it be. Another point would be his accidental execution of the wrong person.

On the next day Verzo had one, simple plan. Both of them had to leave. Well, only him but it would be lonely without any company.

He had to wait until Eguru woke up to talk about what's coming next.

Two hours later it was about time. "Good morning man.." Eguru yawned as he sat down on a chair. Still being sleepy he stood up again to get some coffee.

As Eguru noticed something he got curious. "By the way, why are you always up so early? I've never seen you sleep 'till 10 am or longer."

"Oh, that's just because my room gets bright easily. My curtains let a lot of light shine through and I wake up as soon as it's too bright. And falling asleep again doesn't work me unfortunately", Verzo explained while looking down at his tea.

Eguru laughed. "Ohh, I get it. I had this problem too when I was a kid but now I just sleep like a rock."

He decided sit down once his coffee was ready. He took a sip and the liquid burned his tongue. 'Guess I'm gonna let it rest for a few minutes'

"Man, as bad as it may sound", Verzo began, "we gotta leave this city."

"Really? Why?"

"Because Fabio made himself a double, I was fooled by it and killed the wrong person on accident. And apparently it was someone from the higher ups. Now everyone's searching for me."

Eguru didn't really think anything of it. Knowing Verzo was actually a decent person he just said "Alright" and asked when they were going to leave so he could pack his things. Except he didn't really have anything to pack.

"It'd be best if we left today. Last night I spent some time making plans on how we continue. Just travelling around the kingdom honestly sounds like a good option to me. What do you think about it?"

[System announcement: Journey to become stronger]

A new announcement was right in front of Eguru's eyes. 'Journey to become stronger?'

"Give me a minute, I'll think about it", he said to Verzo before reading the wall of text.

[Description: In order to become someone worth of holding the title as a Devourer one must get stronger. The ways of doing so don't matter. Practise close combat, surviving skills, master handling swords and guns and grow a fit body. Doing so will allow one to fulfill their task.]

'Hmmm.. I see. My life's gonna change drastically soon, right? Perhaps I'll have to visit the ''other side'' soon. I mean it's only really the only logical reason I'd need to grow stronger for. Unless there's a war coming of course.'

As his eyes met the bottom of the text wall something made it's reoccurence.

[Time remaining: 120 days, 23 hours and 58 minutes]

Having all the information he needed he returned to Verzo. "Let's do it. I'm quite interested in seeing all of this kingdom anyways."

Verzo's eyes brightened up. "Then it's decided. I'll start preparing things. You do so too if needed."

"Alright."

Both of them returned to their rooms. Unlike Verzo, Eguru finished his preparations quickly.
