Chapter 22 - Full Potential?

Soaked in sweat and out of breath Eguru finished off the enemy in front of him. He wore a dark cloak and held a great sword which looked like it was made only to serve him. Verzo and Lia fought alongside him and were worn out heavily. In front of them still was a whole damn army. "Fuck! How do we want to kill them all?! They just don't go down in terms of numbers!" Eguru shouted and Verzo collapsed to the ground.

"Verzo!" Lia tried running over to him but was almost caught by a sharp projectile. Just barely noticing it she swiftly evaded it but got caught in another fight immediately. She couldn't move.

All three of them were on the verge of giving up. Eguru and Lia couldn't reach Verzo who was trapped inside a horde of foes. Not being able to get up they came closer to him. For Verzo, it was over. No one could help him nor could he move.

For a second Lia and Eguru heard a scream but it vanished immediately. Blood splattered and the next thing Eguru saw was his best friend's head rolling over to him.

Losing it he fell to the ground and landed on his knees. His arms were hanging down and all hope was left. Verzo was dead, he had given up and Lia continued her pointless struggle against thousands of enemies...

Almost falling off of a bed Eguru woke up soaked in his own sweat. Or so he thought.

When he looked around he noticed he was still outside in the forest. 'A nightmare!' And what a creepy one it was. A shiver went down his spine and when we tried to get up he realized his injuries were holding him back.

Verzo was still lying down on the ground and Eguru crawled up to him. "This isn't good", he said as he inspected his friend's wounds.

While you couldn't really see much outside of his body the insides were messed up. But that was something Eguru couldn't confirm. The only thing he knew was that Verzo definetely had his ribs crushed.

Their trip wasn't even close to ending and yet they already were unable to move. What a pain in the ass.

Tilting up his head he noticed the sun was already setting and it was about to be night. As he couldn't do much Eguru just went to sleep and rest hoping he'd feel better tomorrow.

On the next day he woke up rather late. His wounds still hit him like a truck but he managed to get up on move somewhat normally. Verzo was sitting against a tree and treated his wounds. "How bad is it?" Eguru asked him.

"Could be better. A lot of bones have been crushed entirely and I won't be able to do shit for the next months, maybe even years unless we can find someone that's experienced as a healer."

Hearing how low his friend's voice sounded he felt sorry. He was nothing but a burden until the end. But he shouldn't blame himself.

"Don't make that face man, it was my fault. This twelve fanged was way stronger than I had expected it to be. I don't know how it got so damn strong but it happened." Verzo grinded his teeth.

Both of them were in a bad mood which was reasonable.

"What about your wounds though?" Verzo wanted to know. "I don't know to be honest, I haven't inspected nor treated my wounds. Guess I better do so now."

As he sat down on the grass he let out a pained groan. 'Hope it isn't as bad as I think it is...'

The body parts hurting most were his legs and his upper body. Especially his back as it was slammed through a damn tree. Since it was something he could easily check on he took a look on his legs.

'Flesh wounds... They aren't deep but they'll take time to heal.' His legs probably got cut up by branches when he was sent flying. 'Now onto my back. I won't be able to see my wounds but I'll be able to feel.'

Gently sliding up and down his back he figured out what type of injuries he had. Though it was just guessing for the most part, it still helped him in a way.

He only had some scratches there but some of his bones were broken too. His spine also hurt a bit but it wasn't the main problem. 'My injuries aren't as bad as Verzo's..'

Something rather surprising appeared right in front of his eyes.

[System announcement: Trial to unlock the system's full potential]

'The system's full potential? What does that mean?' He read through the description he was given.

[The system is the main source of a Devourer's power. Without it one will not be able to complete the mission. An offer to participate in a new trial was given the Devourer to make him stronger.

Succeeding will give you the ability to grow stronger exponentially - no limits given.

Will you accept? Yes | No

Note: The trial can be taken on any time]

'Another trial to grow stronger with no limits? It sounds good to me.. But the first trial I faced long ago almost killed me. I'm not sure if this really is a good idea...'

Thinking about it for a moment he decided to postpone it.

'Also how do I decline the offer?' - 'No.'

[Notice: To answer the system think of the system in your head first]

'Ohhh, got it.' Eguru declined the offer.
