Chapter 10 - Unexpected

Verzo was now teaching Eguru the basics. He wasn't happy about it at all but communication is important and he knew that. But still, he wasn't eager to learn.

So it happened to take longer than ever. On the first day, he was able to read about 2 sentences and pronounce some words. The next 7 days nothing really happened besides Eguru slowly losing a bit of patience.

The good thing though was that he could already read a whole page and speak some basic phrases. However, it still hasn't gotten easier for him.

Instead, the language got even harder. Grammar he didn't even slightly understand, pronounciations only the french could've thought of and almost the same amount of characters as kanji had. Vezo let him suffer through all of that even though he knew Eguru wouldn't need at least half of this. He just thought it was funny to mock him.

Finally, three weeks later Eguru had learned the very basics. He still had a long way to go but for now that was indeed an accomplishment. Especially since he was so slow about studying.

Verzo then forced him to talk to some people in that major library and hold a basic conversation. The plan was to see if he would be able to at least ask and say things like "How are you?, "Where can I find...", etcetera. It naturally was also necessary for him to greet and farewell people.

Eguru did that the next couple of days and Verzo always found less and less mistakes as he listened to the way Eguru was holding a conversation. It was time to give him a break before continuing.

As they decided to head out and enjoy the sun for a while they noticed that all the people were gathered in front of a church and just stood there quietly.

Verzo suddenly shifted and looked quite concerned. "This doesn't look good. Let's take a look and see what's going on." "Alright." Eguru followed him.

As they got closer Verzo noticed that the reason half of the city gathered at a church was because the notice of a mass murderer was given out. When they finally got to the crowd the only thing he picked up was "...and don't forget to not go outside when the streets are empty! The killer named Fabio could, and would, attack any second."

With that the masses have started talking and worrying. Some just seemed unbothered and walked away. Eguru of course didn't understand everything and do had to ask his friend what that man was talking about.

"Well, you tell me. How much did you understand?" Eguru had a dull expression on his face. "I knew you would ask this man... From what I understood he was warning people to not go out of their house during the night because of a person named Fabio?"

"Almost correct. I'm amazed. But that's besides the point. He was warning us about a serial killer named Fabio. I know him, he was one of my accomplices during my black-market-phase. Back then Fabio was a nice person and always talked about how he wanted to just live a normal life. Welp. That didn't turn out like that then. This information is new to me too. We should be careful", Verzo glanced at the church.

Eguru spent a few seconds processing the information he just received. "Do you think he's dangerous to deal with?" A dumb question to ask and he knew it but he still had to know. "I really can't tell. Back then he was actually pretty weak and didn't look like he was working out. But other than that why are you even asking? It's not our job to deal with him."

"I know but..", Eguru sighed, "what if we run into him? Or someone near us is getting attacked by him? We can't just stand there and watch on the second part."

"Didn't think you'd want to play the hero." Verzo ironically said. Eguru just stared at him like Verzo was some kind of dumb kid. He then continued. "On a serious note though... We run, or ignore his act of murder. We can't put our lives on the line just for someone that was stupid and went outside at nigh-"

"But you can fight! You literally killed two people in an instant." Eguru interrupted him. The young man on the other hand was straight up disappointed. "Dude, why are you acting like that? I know I can fight but what about YOU? If he decides to focus you instead of me what are you gonna do? Do you have any real life experiences in that regard? I won't let you die just because you want to play the hero all of a sudden. We gotta watch ourselves and YOU have to continue learning our language." Turning around he mumbled something and finished letting out steam.

Eguru got mad and wanted to blurt out some stuff but then realized Verzo was actually right. He wouldn't be able to defend himself. Especially not against something like a gun or a knife. The one and only thing he was good at was running away. Often enough was he in a situation where he ran away. An example being the trial he passed.

Yet he didn't apologize or talk to Verzo for the rest of the day. When they were back at his place Eguru just went to bed almost immediately.
