Chapter 22 - A Private Chat

Delphine got used to not eating commonly while on her journey, and she never wasted her money just to eat something. Most of the time, if she ever needed food in her stomach, then she would go out and hunt either herbivores or carnivores. And so, Delphine joins Simon in eating dinner as the evening was already upon them.

Delphine and Simon were served noodles, and a bottle of wine was served to go along with their food. They were both wine drinkers and didn't mind the flavor; they liked all the flavors of wine. Sometimes they could go for some ale if it was available, and it didn't matter to them how much of it they desired. They continued eating until every last bit of food was gone from the plate; either they were that hungry, or they really liked the way the food was made. Delphine started to drink the wine, and she watched Simon eat his food much faster than she was.

"Simon, how did you like the food?" Delphine asked.

"It's very good. Probably better than most of the noodles most taverns make," Simon answered.

"Thankfully, you came just in time," she said.

"Do you like noodles, Delphine? It seems that way because I haven't seen you eat that much."

"The noodles tasted good. I didn't want to displease the people who made it for us. Noodles and wine are usually my specialties."

"It's not every day I see a knight from a faraway land eat as often as most people."

"Oh, I eat. Maybe not all the time, but mostly once a day. That way, I can be just as prepared and energetic to hunt down the demons. It's usually what happens when you hunt the night creatures so often that it makes that part of life become attached to you. No matter what you do, it will never go away."

"Oh, I get it."

"More wine?"

"Yeah, sure. Thanks."

Delphine starts pouring some wine in a cup and hands it over to Simon so that he can drink from it. And so, they both finished eating their dinner and waited for the sun to set down and the night to begin.

The sun is already down and the moon appeared in the night sky as everyone in the city of Gisbourne returned to their houses. Truly, there was some unspeakable force in the holy city that was kept a secret, and Delphine needed to know every detail. Then, the innkeeper walks into the room that Delphine and Simon were renting; he came to take the plates and the bottle of wine back to the kitchen. Usually, he checks in with the people who were staying for the night, and he likes making sure that they're doing alright.

"Finished your dinner?" The innkeeper asked.

"Yes. It was good," Delphine said.

"Glad to hear it. Is your brother doing alright?" He asked.

"Yes. He's still with me. Sometimes, he and I are the ones who stay up at night. We always sleep in the morning, so we'll try to keep our voices down."

"Is that so? I've never seen you two before, so I take it this is your first time at Gisbourne."

"You're right. We would be honored if we can come back some other time."

"Very well. By the way, this city is under curfew at night, so you can't go walking outside."

"Yes. I knew that."

And so, the innkeeper took their plates and the wine bottle with him, and he exits their room and goes to the kitchen.

"You doing alright, Simon?" Delphine asked.

"Fine as always, Delphine," he answered.

"That's good. I hope you didn't eat that food too fast. You and I are sharing the same bed, and I don't want to smell your stench when I'm asleep," she said.

"I'm not gonna let that happen, I promise. I did come as your cook, after all. It's kinda my job, even if it's not quite how I imagine it."

Then, Delphine gives a short smile to Simon and looks outside at the sky; the full moon was already out, and she could sense this intense feeling inside of her.

Was that a smile? Simon thought. Then, Delphine gets herself up from the chair she was sitting on and starts putting on her armor.

She quickly gathered her weapons and placed them all with her armor as she is making preparations, and she wraps her cloak around her back.

"Now then, I'm going out. Close the doors and windows after I leave. If anyone comes through the door, pretend you're asleep," Delphine said.

"Alright," Simon said.

"Good. I'm off," she said.

"Delphine! Wait!"

She turns her head and looks at Simon as she was about to leave through the window; he had a worried expression on his face.

"Be careful, okay?" Simon asked. Delphine slowly looks away from him and looks down at herself; she never had anyone remind her of being careful in the night.

"Don't worry about me. I'll be fine," she said. Then, she leaps outside of the window and lands onto another rooftop as Simon watches on.

As she runs, she could feel herself moving so incredibly fast and imagine herself leaping like an assassin in the night. Of course, Delphine knew so much about sneaking and being somebody who hides in the shadows amongst otherworldly beings. She also knew and understood the ways of being a predator hunting down its prey. Eventually, she comes across the cathedral she and Simon went to a few hours ago, and she saw it while standing upon another building. Delphine knew that they were not wrong about the city being under curfew at night, and she covers her head with the top of her cloak.

The watch around the cathedral is tight. I should avoid going down there. She thought. She begins to think about a plan to get inside the cathedral without being noticed by the guards.

Then, Delphine runs as fast as she could and jumps off the roof and lands onto another building; she continues to do this sort of thing until the guards don't take a look at her. The dark power she has inside of her allows her to accomplish many abilities in the night, and she allowed herself to get used to it. It wasn't anything impossible for her to do; she often considered herself to be an athlete and achieve many things through stunts. These stunts were very challenging and far too intense for any normal person to achieve, and there were barely any gymnastics in any of the kingdoms of the earth. Then, one of the guards had a great hearing ear and managed to hear Delphine climb the walls of the cathedral, but she was nowhere to be seen.

"What on earth?" The guard asked.

"What is it?" The other guard asked.

"Oh, it's nothing," he answered. They both continued to be in the lookout for any intruders as the city is still being under curfew.

Delphine looks down at the city and knew that it was a very long way down, and it would be a real shame if she fell. Then, she looks up at the stained-glass window before her and saw that the lights were on, and she knew she was at the right spot.

"The south room on the top floor," she said. Then, she continues to climb her way to that location as the moon shines down on her back.

She saw Edward the priest stand there and it seemed as if he was waiting or expecting someone to visit him. Then, he begins to hear this clattering noise, and his eyes were wide open, and he turns around to see who it was. Delphine pushes the window open and lands onto the floor; she kneeled down before the priest to discuss important business with him. She was more than prepared to get on with the business, even if none other could handle it other than herself.

Then Delphine said to him, "I am Delphine of Moria. A knight of the darkness and a hunter of all the servants of hell. And I received word that a powerful demon is lurking in this city. Is that correct?"

Edward found it nearly impossible to give the ebony warrior such a clear answer, and he felt his heart beating faster than usual.

"Yes. Yes, I'm the one who sent for you. That is correct," he answered.

"Tell me more," Delphine said. She stands up and walks slowly towards the old priest; she gave him time to give her an answer about this demon.

Then Edward said to her, "It was far too monstrous to be called a human. Its armor was dark as the sky, black as the night, and cold as the wind. You take a good look at the eyes of this beast and it will leave you scarred for life. This beast carried a large, black double-edged sword that cuts down iron and steel. Nobody in their right mind would ever make it out alive from this vile creature from the depths of hell.

"How could this happen? We are the servants of our Lord! This powerful creature will come and kill us all. Other nations will believe that we don't know how to control our own people, and they'll take everything away from us. Facing that monster alone will be like digging your own grave and writing your own epitaph."

Then, Edward finished speaking about this powerful creature to Delphine, and his bones started to shiver.
