Chereads / Delphine of Moria / Chapter 18 - The Light in the Dark

Chapter 18 - The Light in the Dark

"You forget who I am. I am the one who shall not rest until every last one of you vile creatures are driven away from this land!" Delphine shouted. Then, she uses her greatsword and drives the blade deep into the demon's mouth, and she slices half of the demon's head off.

The head flew onto one of the demons that was standing in the frontline, and they were all in agony after seeing the horrible outcome. It was the first time that Simon ever got to see Delphine fight demons up close in person, and he started to shiver after seeing it all for himself.

"I stand ready, creatures of darkness. I do not fear any of you. I bring death from the shadows," Delphine said. Then, another demon began to charge towards Delphine to try and kill her, but even he couldn't stand a chance.

Delphine parried the attack, grabbed the demon's head, and made him stare at all of the other demons. Then, she uses her greatsword and slices off the demon's head and kicks the rest of its body down to the ground. Lots of blood began to splatter all over Delphine's sword and the ground as she stood ready against the demons. She and Simon did not hesitate to make sure that they are prepared to make it through the night against the onslaught of the night creatures.

Delphine held her greatsword with both of her hands as the blade is covered with so much blood and gore after killing those two demons. Simon made sure to have himself stay by Delphine's side until the night is over, and he has not given up. Delphine was very quick with the sword, and her blade spins around with each demon that tries to kill her and Simon. Delphine fought bravely and boldly to the death against all of her opponents, and her muscles never grew tired. Indeed, it was something to quickly get used to if someone in this world became a hunter of the night hordes. Her ultimate desire besides finishing off the Grim Reaper was to ensure that all the demons of Hell are driven away.

Suddenly, a few demons started to run towards Simon with their weapons being pointed at him as Delphine fought back against the others. Simon's sword was upgraded with the dark magic that was given to him from the Wolf Queen's strange marbles. He fought back against the few demons that were standing in front of him, and he seemed to be fearless in this battle. His skill in combat did not match Delphine's abilities, but he made sure that he survived the onslaught, whatever the cost. Like Delphine, he was determined to fight to the death against all of his opponents who would try to take him down.

The ebony knight was always a fierce knight in combat, and her strength with her blade was beyond any man's power. Some say it was luck that guided her across all forces of darkness, and some are found in disbelief of her as she fought to the death. Many others have tried and failed to survive on their own against the demonic invasions, and they were all devoured. Delphine had her secrets about what it was like to survive the many nights that would fall upon her, but she refused to tell anyone. She simply stood there and killed any creature that would charge towards her; she always sliced them open with her sword.

The magic that was added to both Delphine's sword and Simon's sword were ancient and very rare for anyone ever to come across. Lagertha was the one who created that dark magic and used it to craft her signature sword and make other people swear their loyalty to her. Delphine dismembered so many of the demons' arms, legs, and heads to the point that the whole area was painted with demonic gore. The sharpness of Delphine's greatsword was so intense and extreme that she could swing it through anything like leather. Simon remained behind her as he also killed a couple of demons that were coming towards him.

And so, Delphine and Simon fought back against the demons until every last one of them was dead, and the night continued. Sometimes, news of hunters and adventurers in the night is told in the markets of the cities, and some of those conversations are common. The onslaught between Delphine and Simon against the demons is over, and they both continued in the night. Delphine wasn't as fascinated as Simon was when they both received the dark magic that Lagertha carried. Therefore, if it meant that it would prove useful on Delphine's journey, and if it said that it would at least take her to about three-quarters of her quest, then she would have to trust that magic.

"Well, that went well. So, how was that? Did I help?" Simon asked.

"You did well. But if you want to help some more, distract them. Whoever is not my focus shall be yours... but only when safe to do so," Delphine answered.

"Sure, I'll remember that."

"Good. Now, let's find ourselves a place to rest. Considering that this is your first day with me, I'll let you have some rest. If any demon comes our way, I'll take care of them."

Then, Delphine and Simon started to walk for a long while in the forest during the night, as Delphine tends to make sure that no creature or beast gets in their way. It was now quiet in the night, and they could hear only the sounds that the demons made as they walked onward. A hunter's legs never grew tired of walking or running; in these days, hunters survived by finding food to eat and water to drink in the outskirts of the countryside. They walked on until the moon seemed to disappear from the sky slowly, but the voices of the demons still whispered in the wind. Then, they found themselves near the edge of a cliff where they could see the mountains from ten miles away.

"We'll rest here," Delphine said.

"Oh. Yeah, sure... no problem," Simon said. Then, Simon sat down beside the large tree next to the cliff, but he started to feel a bit distressed; Delphine saw that he was feeling this way and went up to him.

"Is there a problem?" She asked.

"No. I just... feel as if something bad might happen to you, and I wouldn't know what else to do out here," Simon answered.

"You're going to be just fine. I'll make sure that you're defended by whatever means necessary. The two of us must remain focused."

"Yeah, that reminds me of something."

"What is it?"

"What are we up against? Where are you exactly taking me? What is it that I don't know so much about, but you seem to know it all?"

The questions that Simon answered began to make Delphine's eyes lighten up, but not in the right way. He asked her these questions as if he'll never receive anything useful from them, and he didn't know whether or not he might live to tell people his tales of triumph with the Ebony Warrior. Delphine went up to him and kneeled to him to make sure that he could see her more clearly.

Then Delphine said to him, "I don't know what will happen along the way, and I don't know what the future holds. But I know this, I won't ever let you be in harm's way. There is much about me that is too much for someone like you to handle. If I told you now, you would never believe me, and you will most likely leave me here. You said to me that you had nothing else to do in life, and you want this to be over as much as I do. Understand this, when you are with me, you will never sleep in the night ever again.

"You will only rest in the morning and be ready to leave by noon. You've got a lot to learn. Remember to stay by my side, and be ready for all sorts of danger when you're with me. Never forget this conversation, alright?"

"Yeah. I won't forget this."

"Good. Now get some rest."

Then, Delphine gets herself off the ground and lets Simon sleep beside the tree, and she watches the moon slowly set down. The mountains that were before her were something of beauty while looking at it; it was like looking at a new painting before her eyes. Delphine knew that she would have to cross even the most massive mountains if she so wishes for this madness to be over. Now, she had Simon following her wherever she goes, and she would not give up on him nor leave him behind. Then, Delphine finds herself a place to lay down behind the tree; she wasn't as tired as Simon was, but she did need somewhere to rest her legs from so much walking.
