After I finish vomiting I close the door as quietly as possible. I really hope this gets easier..... I grab the desk to help stand myself up. On the desk is a computer and a box cutter. Grabbing the box cutter I begin opening up boxes to see what's inside. The first box I open has tampons in it... I really dont think I need those..... I mean... maybe? I grab a box a place them in my bag. Could be useful? Moving on I continue cutting open boxes and finally find some food. Spam, beef jerky, chips, soups, cereal, crackers and some protein bars. Filling my bag as full as I can, I count enough food for maybe a week or so. Maybe I could use a dolly? I check the rest of the storage area and find a dolly with some straps on it. I quickly grab it and go to roll it towards the boxes but... *creak *squeak *creak *squeak *creak *squeak. The wheels are too loud.... I wont make it anywhere with this.... Damn my shitty luck. Walking out with this thing is a death sentence. Thankfully my house is less than a mile away so I can make a second trip for this stuff. But what if I can't? What if next time there's not just 3 on the road.... Thinking to here I begin trying to fix the squeaking. Maybe some oil? I think I saw some WD40 up front.. I walk to the door and crack it looking outside, seeing that nothings changed I walk out and look for some oil. I grab 2 cans and walk back to the dolly and begin spraying it's wheel bar hoping for the best. *creak *squeak *creak *squeak *creak *squeak. Fuck.
Well. That didn't work. I'll just have to make due with what I can carry safely and maybe try to come back with a wagon or something. I grab my backpack and hoist it onto my shoulder. It's pretty heavy but I should manage. walking out to the front I look around and seeing nothing I begin my trip home. Slowly moving and being wary of everything. I miss the way it used to be. Back before all of this. But that wont help me now. The only thing I can do is keep pushing forward. Stay alive as long as possible. Moving up the road I can see the 3 zombies I hid from earlier standing around the abandoned cars. I set my bag down and get ready to hide. I take the screwdriver from my pocket and throw it is hard as I can towards one of the nearby houses hoping to draw them away, and slide under a car.
*shh *shh *shh*shh *shh *shh*shh *shh *shh
Looks like they bought it. I wait until I see them moving past the house to slide out of my hiding place. Grabbing my bag I move on. It takes another 15 minutes but I can finally see my house. It's a white two story Victorian era house with a large grey porch with a gated railing and an old iron rod fencing around 4.5 feet tall covering the property. I used a bike lock to keep the gate closed, and thankfully its still there. I've seen enough movies and shows to know humans are the real monsters in dark times....
I undo the bike lock and step inside locking it back behind me as I move up the stairs and towards the front door. Heading inside I make my way up the stairs and drop my bag off in the common area. The dark brown carpet has blood splotches in a few places from clearing it out and the white walls have splatter marks.
I really need to clean them up but, after today's adventure, I need a shower. By some grace of god I still have hot water. Stripping down I look at myself in the mirror. 6' tall with brown hair and green eyes, and a bit on the chubby side. Stepping into the shower I begin cleaning the blood and gunk off myself as I think about what to do next. The news hasn't aired in a week. Theres nothing on the tv or the radio. I doubt I'm the only one alive in a town full of rednecks but I haven't even heard a gunshot in 3 days. What should I do? I hate this. I just wanna go back to work, chat up a discord over which skins are the best, and maybe even ask that girl Trisha from HR out for a date.... My thoughts are stopped by a blast of freezing cold water and I quickly shut it off. No use thinking about the past. Best to use my time productively. I dress myself and grab some bleach. I've gotta get this blood cleaned up.
