Chapter 30 - Flashback 6

May 4th 2013; 3:48am

"This is extremely fucked up," Lolita screamed, running a hand through her hair and gripping the steering wheel with the other.

She let out a long, ragged breath and glanced in the rearview mirror to see if we had lost him.

"What the hell Shay?"

Thunder crashed from above and I ignored Lolita; instead I glanced out the window, at the darkness surrounding us and the droplets of rain that pattered against the car.

Putting on the wipers, Lolita adjusted her seat, not because she was uncomfortable, but because she was anxious and still slightly shaken up.

She ran her hand through her hair again and clicked her tongue in annoyance.

"Shay!" she yelled and I snapped my head towards her, eyeing her irritably.

She glanced at me briefly before dragging her eyes back onto the road.

Squinting into the darkness before us, she increased the brightness of the headlights.

"What," I said, gripping tightly onto my seatbelt as Lolita sped down the highway "what the fuck is your problem?"

"My problem? Gosh, Shay, I don't know," she said sarcastically and I could almost feel her rolling her eyes "maybe the fact that we were just chased by some freaking lunatic," Lolita said, slowing down and swerving to the right so she could take the next exit off the highway.

I was older than her, but she still felt like she had the right to be bossy.

This was why I hated the fact that she was the reasonable one and I simply wasn't.

"Who was he anyway?"

"How am I supposed to know?" I hissed, rubbing at the goosebumps that had formed on my upper arms, before dragging my gaze from her and back out the window.

"Don't play dumb Shay," Lolita said as she slowed to a stop.

The traffic light turned red, so she took her hands off the wheel and turned her body to me, her brows raised as if waiting for an explanation.

"Look, I didn't know he'd get the wrong idea; it was all just harmless flirting!" I yelled, throwing my arms up exasperatedly.

"Harmless flirting?" she yelled again, turning back to the wheel as the light turned green.

"You threw yourself at him! Of course his pervy ass took it to mean something more!" she hissed and stepped on the accelerator, sending us hurtling down the highway once again.

"My gosh, your recklessness will be the death of us"

"Look, I'm sorry, gosh chill the fuck out" I said, rolling my eyes as I glanced behind us to make sure that he wasn't following us anymore.

Lolita didn't answer my smart-ass reply, but instead, let out another low sigh.

The car was quiet for the next few miles, and then headlights shone behind us, making me glance back "you've got to be kidding me"

"Look, it might not be him, hold on," Lolita said, slowing the car down and ignoring my 'what do you think you're doing' protests, pulled over to the side of the road.

We waited for the car to pass and when it did, we let out twin sighs of reliefs.

Lolita accelerated once more and we sat in silence for a minute or two.

"Where the hell are the police?" I asked absentmindedly, glancing down to the phone that I had used to call the cops a couple of minutes ago.

"We're in a car Shay, you can't expect them to get here as fast as they normally would" Lolita snapped at me, driving the car onto the bridge.

"What's with the attitude?" I snapped back, glaring at her.

"Attitude?" she yelled, completely losing whatever sanity she had held on to "this entire night was all for you! Then you had to go get yourself extremely drunk, and throw yourself at some random stranger, who right now is trying to kill us," she said, glaring daggers at me.

"Do you need me to go on?"

"Look, you agreed to go with me okay? It was out of your own free will!" I screamed, running my hands furiously through my hair "I didn't cuff us together okay? The choice was yours."

"Don't even try to put any of this on me," she yelled, snapping her fingers "he threw that party to celebrate your birthday, how could we not go? Besides all this is all your fault" she shoved her fingers in my face.

I had no answer to that so I sat there, with my arms across my chest, fuming

"This is your fault" she muttered, dragging her gaze back to the road "So deal with it."

I narrowed my eyes at her and glanced back out the window. Headlights appeared out of nowhere then, heading in our direction and blinding us.

As Lolita yanked on the wheel, the car swerved and everything seemed to slow down.

I heard my name then and blinked in shock, before turning my attention to my little sister.

She looked terrified.
