Chapter 5 - The butterfly project

Kazuma went home after a long day of work and just fell onto the sofa. He was exhausted. He looked around his dirty apartment. Brown carpet, scratched leather sofa, the place was a mess.

The next day Kazuma and Kira met up at the train station, went to work, ate together on their lunch break and then went to a large park after their work was over, it was 6:00 so the sun had already begun to set. They were sat on a clean wooden bench surrounded by trees and sky scrapers. They were in the middle of a conversation. "Oh my god this woman phoned today and I swear she didn't even know what a smartphone was, she was just like:'so what does this button do' ha ha ha" Kira was in hysterics, and for the first time in years Kazuma was actually laughing as well. "Kira, thank you for bringing me here, it feels as though I haven't had a friend in years" Kazuma said blushing with embarrassment. "I'm glad, oh by the way, what's that bracelet all about? doesn't look like your style" Kira laughed. Kazuma paused. "Well my friend made it for me..." He then went on to tell Kira everything that happened.

"... Ever since then I've been a bit of a loner" Kazuma said. Kira's eyes were filled with tears. "I have been reading the manga Trains for a long time, not only did I never think I would meet the author but I also never thought it would have so much weight to it." The two spoke a little more after that. "Hey I have to go now, it's getting late so maybe hang out tomorrow" asked Kira. "Yeah sure" said Kazuma "I'm free at 12"

"ok 12 it is" replied Kira. after walking a few paces away Kazuma heard a crash and Kira's voice say "oh shoot!" Kazuma turned around to see Kira's phone smashed on the ground. "well I guess I won't be calling you any time soon ha ha" Kira joked.

Kazuma returned to his apartment. He was beginning to actually like Kira. She was the first person to actually make an effort to talk to him and listen to his story since he moved to the city. Kazuma's train of thought was broken by a knock on the door. To anyone else this would be a normal occurrence but in Kazuma's life it was unheard-of. He cautiously opened the door to see a woman. she was tall and slender and wearing business attire. she was wearing glasses and had jet black hair up in a bun. "Can I help you?" asked Kazuma. "Yes actually, is your name Kazuma Floren?"

"Yes, who are you?"

"Hi my name is Victoria, I'm here on behalf of Butterfly systems, if you would care to come with me I will explain everything on the way." She ordered. Kazuma followed out of curiosity.

they went out onto the streets and began to walk down a complex path. "So who exactly are you?" asked Kazuma. Victoria glanced at him retaining her upright strut. "Butterfly systems is a technical production company that include scientists software developers and business men and women who take care of the business side of things, that's me"

"what do you need me for?"

"I'm getting to that. you work for Airi systems no?" Victoria asked. she had a very perky and demanding voice. "yes I do"

"Well while they develop phones and computers we have more, shall we say, ambitious goals." She said as they began to walk down a narrow alleyway. "We have begun something called the butterfly project, named after the butterfly effect theory, for you see we wish to change the past to make a better future, we want to make time travel possible" there was a hint of excitement in her voice as the two turned a corner to see a huge, metal, modern looking building with 'Butterfly systems' written above what looked to be the main door. "Is this some kind of joke" asked Kazuma. "oh no, certainly not" frowned Victoria before strutting in through the main door.

Kazuma followed her in through a tight security system where he was scanned and searched before entering a large room with a huge machine in the centre with scientists and researchers analysing and altering it. Even after being confronted with all this tech Kazuma still wasn't convinced. I mean, time travel is only in science fiction and films, there's no way it could be real. "So does this actually work?" he asked. "Yes indeed my friend" remarked a man with spiky blonde hair and an open lab coat with a t shirt underneath. The t shirt had a skull and crossbones on it. "Sorry my name is Zack I'm one of the head scientists and I'm also incharge of testing, you must be Kazuma, nice to meet you"

"How do you know who I am?" asked Kazuma. "We simply looked you up" inputted Victoria. "we have tested this machine to see if it can change the past, and it works, but we have only tested it on minor things like changing text messages and stopping mugs from smashing, I promise we will explain everything once you have seen it for yourself."

Kazuma agreed and was told to change something minor from not too long ago. "Hmm. I could go back to when Kira dropped her phone" he pondered. "alright" said Zack "just tell me the date and time and we'll be ready to go!" The machine was a big metal archway wish motherboards and wires messily covering the whole thing. It looked something akin to an MRI scanner. Kazuma told Zack the date and time and crawled inside laying flat on his back. He could hear a woman count down from 3 and then a bright white light.

Kazuma awoke with grass beneath his feat and a red sky, it was sunset. He could hear people talking and when he looked he was astonished to see himself talking to Kira, sat on a park bench. "Holy hell, it actually worked!" he said. Kazuma hid behind a bush and waited for the conversation to end. He couldn't believe it, he had traveled back in time! When he heard Kira say goodbye he got to his feat and began to walk over to her. as she was rummaging through her bag her phone fell out and just as it did Kazuma caught it. "Oh wow thanks, how did you get here fast enough to catch that, your like a ninja!" said Kira in astonishment. "Yeah I suppose so" said Kazuma nervously before running behind a tree just in time to come back to the present.

Kazuma climbed out of the machine and instantly began to feel faint. "So did you do it, did you manage to change anything?" asked Zack. Kazuma hesitantly pulled out his phone and dialed Kira's number. He waited. "Hey, everything ok?" It was her, how was that possible, her phone completely shattered. "Uh Yeah, just checking you got home okay" replied Kazuma in a shaky voice. "Yeah I made it home okay. it's funny, if you hadn't have caught my phone earlier we probably wouldn't be having this conversation ha ha, okay, Seeya."

"So, now do you believe us?" asked Victoria.
