Magnus was executing evasive maneuvers as he had learned, diping and diving all over the airspace above the clouds in an effort to shake off the Deutsch fighters as the gunman fired and missed, their turrets being hard to use.
Benny had enough of this. "Magnus, you go back there and show 'em how to use a turret. I'll take care of the flying!"
Magnus didn't need to be told twice. He got up and moved to the turrets. He pulled one of the students out of the turret, shouting, "Move over! Let me have a shot!"
Climbing into the mounted gun, he lined up the sights with a fighter and started shooting. He shot behind the fighter. He led the fighter by a little bit and fired some more. The bullets coming from his turret struck fighter, tearing it up. That fighter exploded into a ball of flames and fell through the clouds and hit the earth.
Magnus aimed at the next target. He heard the bomb doors open and the bomb fall. He closed his eyes, waiting for the bright flash. There it went. Opening his eyes again, he led the next target by more than usual because it was farther away.
"Thud! Thud! Thud!", the turret went, as Magnus desperately aimed and shot, needing to shoot at least three fighters down. Suddenly, that number went up as one of the crewmen shouted, "Another bomber down! We need to get these fighters off of our backs!"
Magnus was more desperate and determined than ever to shoot down those tiny little flies buzzing around him. He reloaded the turret and aimed again. Waisting no shots, he transitioned from target to target with great ease. He then felt a large amount of G's as Benny turned the plane around, back towards Britannia.
Firing without stopping, Magnus was calculatingly accurate as he wasted as little bullet as he could. The first five bombers were going to leave and try to take some of the fighters with them as they ran out of bombs. The other five still had all four bombs and had to continue to reach more factories.
None of the fighters followed the departing planes.
Benny saw this, and, cursing to the sky, turned back around, shouting through the radio to go on without him. Magnus was still shooting, having shot down five Deutsche fighters. There number of fighters was down to 23, but they were still outnumbered 23:9. Now 23:5, from four bombers leaving.
Still shooting, Magnus was soon out of ammo. He shouted to the previous gunman, "Get me more ammo!"
The gunman responded, "I can't. There is no more ammo. The other gunman was reckless with his shots and used the rest."
Magnus was furious. How was he supposed to shoot down the fighters now. Getting an idea, he got out of the turret as fast as possible and ran up to his pilot's chair. He said to Benny, "Keep thesse kids alive for me, would ya?"
Putting on the parachute from under his chair, he ran to the back of the plane and opened the door. He jumped, and tried to land on a fighter.
The fighter was coming right for him. Magnus hit the cockpit of the Deutsche plane and stayed there. Opening the cockpit, he pulled the pilot out of the plane, and threw him to the ground. Getting in the fighter, he checked how much ammo it had as he struggled to close the cockpit again.
Once he got it closed, he had to pull up immediately so he wouldn't crash as the plane was headed for some trees. Putting the throttle all the way up, the fighter really started to move. This was a much nicer plane than what he had flown before.
He was approaching the same elevation as the planes above him. Switching the radio to the UPC frequency, he tried talking through the radio, but it wouldn't get through.
He decided that showing them that it was him was good enough. He approached a fighter and shot, his rounds riddling the other plane full of holes as it burst into flames and spiralled towards the earth, landing in a river and effectually drowning the pilot.
Magnus flew to the next victim, his need for speed being satisfied by this fighter, being much faster than both the bomber and the UPC fighter he had flown.
Magnus shot down another plane, and, dipping the nose down and left, shot and fired at another fighter. Having shot down the remaining fighters who were focused on the bombers, Magnus tried to enter the bomber formation.
Then it happened.
A flash of fire from the side of one of the bombers was directed at Magnus. Suddenly, he was falling to the ground. Magnus ejected and opened his parachute. He slowly fell to the ground, which just so happened to be Deutsche territory.
Magnus was now stranded. He was alone in enemy territory without the General to support him. He got scared. Then Amicus called out to him.
"Magnus, try materializing me. It will work, your mental capacity is good enough now."
Magnus did as he was told. Imaging Amicus with a body, he put out his hands and focused on seeing the body in his surroundings.
Opening his eyes, he saw a body, wearing a UPC uniform. Wondering how the uniform got there, the body twitched, and sat up. The body asked him, "Magnus, is that you?"
His efforts had payed off. He wasn't alone anymore. He was stuck with an AI behind Deutsch lines. Magnus asked Amicus, "Where are we?"
Amicus promptly answered, "In Deutschland. We aren't that far from the front lines. Let's try and find a working car. There's one 32 miles to our northeast."
Finally having backup with him, Magnus, stuck in the forests of Deutschland, was on a mission now. He had to return to the General in Britannia before he was imprisoned and disected by Deutsche scientists.
