Chapter 29 - The Story Is Interrupted

"And then?!", the child asked Magnus, his eyes lighting up.

"Well, then I-", Magnus was interrupted. The door to his cell flung open. It was an adult Administrator.

"What are you doing in here, child? Have we not taught you to stay away from this trespasser and thief? This man has stolen things of value from us, and we shall convert him! Do not trust him!", the adult administrator said, starting to get worked up.

Magnus had been telling his life story to the child every night after sleeping for the entirety of the day, and the adult Admins grown wise to what they were doing. Telling stories was restoring his humanity.

By keeping him locked up and isolated, having pulled Amicus out of him forcefully, the Admins were hoping to make him into a pure Admin, killing off his human side.

By doing this, they would remove the possibility of his betrayal in siding with the Tribune. Even if they weakened his human side sufficiently enough, it would diminish his human urges and silly ethics.

The Administrators viewed themselves as the nobility of the multiverse, ruling over their dominions with ease and efficiency. Thus, the power goes to their heads, giving them this inflated ego.

Admins rule differently, of course, as people have different personalities. Some rule as the gods of their dominions, directly influencing their worlds, and some rule as the fate of their world, setting things into motion by planting ideas and thoughts.

These Admins were all presented with a choice when this intruder snuck into their abode a second time and took something from them. They could either end him, or they could turn him to their side.

Thus, a majority of Admins being the scheming type, they imprisoned him, seeing Magnus to have great potential. So, they spared his life after they caught him in the act of theft and imprisoned him in the darkest, dingiest dungeon they had.

The Admin continued, "Go on, child, leave this man be.", ushering the child out and spitting at Magnus' feet as they said "man" with disgust.

Magnus was alone again. He felt sleepy, but couldn't sleep as he had overslept for the past week.

Then he started thinking about back on earth. He thought about his wife. He thought about his children. He thought again about every brutal aspect of the wars he fought. All these thoughts made his heart ache, longing for home.

He sprawled himself on the cold, hard stone ground, and closed his eyes. He thought in Deutsche. It calmed him, as he had used Deutsche much more after the war, so he started associating it with pleasant things.

Magnus realized how beautiful a continent Europa was, with its dense, fir forests and tall, snowy-peaked mountains. Too bad he missed it all during the war.

Thinking back on things, his generation hadn't had it that bad. Not as bad as the current generation, at least. Boy, life had been good to him. He had lived well, protecting his country, building a family, and protecting them, too.

He had to go back, whatever the cost. He had to go back with the payload to save her. He had to restore his humanity first, though. Those 80 some years in this dungeon had really taken a toll on it.

Magnus didn't care. Sure, he had had his screw-ups, all those times tripping on the way to school. All those times stuttering or getting his foot in his mouth when talking to his now-wife. But he wouldn't screw up this time. He couldn't afford to.

Developing a plan of action was hard without information, Magnus knew that better than anybody. But, it had worked before and it'll work again.

Magnus' brain went into overdrive. Could he break the bars? No, he tried that within his first week here. Could he dig out? No, he tried that in his second week here. Could he get some help? Plausible.

If he needed something, like a fresh pair of clothes, all he needed to do was ask, and it would be fetched for him. The Administrators weren't monsters. But who could he call on? Who did he know that would help him.

"The General! He's bound to be here! All I have to do is talk to him!", Magnus thought, concocting a plan of action.

Magnus drew up a rough outline of action in his head, and slept on it. With all the time in the multiverse, he could spare to waste some. Thinking things through another time would never hurt him.

It was set, he had his plan. He would ask for a new change of clothes and to speak to the General. If he couldn't speak to him, he could just ask to have him deliver his clothes. Thus, Magnus put his plan into motion.

"Excuse me?! I need another change of clothes!", Magnus shouted.

An Administrator appeared before him with a key-ring loaded with keys and a change of clothes for the imprisoned one.

Magnus stood up, and the door swung open. Two more Administrators appeared and held him down as the first unchained him, using a new key for each separate lock. After 28 locks were unlocked, Magnus felt much lighter.

The stripped him down, his old clothes dirty and faded. They were not stained, however, since they gave him nothing to eat, theorizing that starving him would kill off his humanity faster.

When they lifted his arms up, he started speaking.

"Do you guys know the Administrator of my home?"

"Yes.", the three answered in unison, in a dull, monotone voice.

"Could I speak to him? I would like to know how my family is doing.", Magnus asked, being fully aware from idle chatter he heard in this realm that the time of a dominion is significantly slower than the time here.

"Yes.", they answered as they fitted the shirt over his arms and head.

Magnus was surprised, not expecting it to be this easy.

Once the shirt was on and the pants too, they put all of his chains and locks back on, and disappeared. Then the General appeared before him.
