Magnus woke up. He was in an unfamiliar bed. He then remembered what happened yesterday. He remembered that he had flown a plane over a forest in which raged a fierce battle. Undoubtedly, the battle was won because he and Benny had seized air superiority for them.
When he got out of bed, he felt groggy. Probably because of the massive amount of G's on his body from the maneuvers he was pulling.
Magnus got and the floor and started doing push-ups, remembering how to do them from the time Amicus reprimanded him. He started counting, trying to wake himself up.
"1... 2... 3... 4...", Magnus kept counting, lost in thought.
"Up and at 'em!"
Magnus was startled by the wake-up call of the Academy. A bell sounded as someone walked down the hall, banging on the door and shouted to wake up people. Magnus, already being up and at 'em, disregarded the wake up call.
"44... 45... 46...", Magnus kept going, not yet feeling the burn of the exercise.
"Magnus! You up yet?!", Benny shouted, bursting into the room.
"I'm up!", Magnus said, immediately getting up and saluting to his instructor for the remainder of the day.
"Good, let's get going. Today, we'll be doing a bombing run with a bomber. We will have the students at the Academy running the bomber, so all we have to do is position them over the targets. Today, we'll be bombing the Deutsche industrial zone. We will have to be travelling farther than usually though, since someone already blew up the southern-most factories."
"Yes, sir! Let's get out to that bomber!", Magnus said, still saluting.
"Hold your horses, we still have to get some food in you. At ease.", Benny said, touched by Magnus' enthusiasm and youth.
Benny lead Magnus to the cafeteria. They went through two big doors which were forged from sheet metal. Grabbing a tray and some grub, Benny lead Magnus through the cafeteria with eight other people. Including the two going to sit down at the table, there was ten total people there.
"Magnus, these are the students who are going to be on the bomber with us. Say hi."
"Hi.", he said, and sat down. Still being the anti-social kid he was, he sat next to Benny and didn't talk to any of the other eight. Benny talked to them, giving them the information on their mission, but Magnus just looked down and are his food.
"So, we're going to do a bombing run today, over the industrial zone of Deutschland. The bomber is going to have four 1,000 pound bombs. We're going to be leading one box of twelve planes including us. We will have no escort of fighters."
"No escort of fighters?! You're insane!", one of students shouted, standing up and and pointing at Benny, making radical hand gestures.
"No, I'm not. There is a reason there are guns on those bombers and we are going to use them. Do not question my sanity.", Benny said, calmly outarguing the student as he slowly sat down.
"Now, because we are on the southwest end of Britannia, we are going to take the train over to the central east end to shorten the flight path. We are going to take the train over there and liftoff at 23:00. The flight to the industrial zone from there will take 40 minutes, so we will be engaged somewhere around 23:25. The debrief is over, be the plane at the runway by 22:45. Good luck, soldiers!", Benny finished the debrief, went over to where the dishes are washed and put his tray in the water.
Magnus finished his food and got up.
One of the students grabbed Magnus' arm as he was leaving, and said, "Hey, good luck, pilot. Don't get us killed."
Magnus looked at the brown-haired student for a second, then shook off his grip and put his tray in the soap too.
Going back to his room, he gathered up his clothes. Putting on the rest of his uniform and putting the coat over his arm and his hat on top of the coat, he left the academy and went to the train station. He caught the train over to the designated city and waited.
Getting there eight hours early. He went to the hangar that the bomber he was going to fly was in. He pushed the hangar door open and gazed at the much larger plane that he was going to fly.
It was much larger than the bomber he had flown before. But this time, he would have Benny in the cockpit with him, right next to him. With Benny's guidance, hopefully nothing would go wrong. But in Magnus' mind, he knew that Benny didn't have any experience flying bombers.
Gazing in awe at the plane, he felt a little sleepy. He hadn't slept on the train at all. Still wanting to rest, he went into the plane and sat in the chair on the left in the cockpit. He slouched, put the pilot's hat over his eyes, and slept.
When he woke up, Benny was asleep next to him. Magnus looked at his watch. It showed 22:30.
"15 minutes until showtime!", Magnus thought. With enough luck, his flying efforts would bring and end to the war and allow Magnus to return home. However, Magnus still didn't know how this whole Administrator fiasco would end, but he did know he wanted to go home.
Shaking Benny awake, Magnus said, "Benny, it's almost 22:40. Are the students here yet?"
Benny stirred out of his slumber. Inhaling for four seconds, Benny sat up. He said, "I don't know, are they?"
Magnus left the cockpit to the body of the plane. No one inside. He exited the plane. No one outside. He went outside the hangar and looked around. No one.
Another pilot ran up to him and said, "We gotta go in 5 minutes, where's your crew?"
Magnus replied, "I don't know."
