Chapter 17 - The System, Part 2

Orcus was standing still, while gazing at the scenery of the underworld, lost in his thoughts. I could see his hands behind his back as I approached Orcus.

I stood a metre behind the large God and asked, "What exactly is the system?"

Orcus, who was still faced opposite to me, replied, "A long time ago, 2 Gods ruled over this vast universe, the God of Space, and the God of Time. As they ruled through the aeons, they noticed that beings would fight far too often. They realised, that they alone, could no longer rule over this vast world. And then, came the advent of the system. A passage for all notable beings to become a God. After the two Gods invented the system, thousands of new Gods were born over the course of time. I was one of them.

The new Gods ruled over their respective races as kings and queens. The world flourished once more. Looking at this, the Gods of Space and Time decided to pass their power to a heir to begin a new era in history. That heir was me."

Orcus sighed while looking down. During this time I didn't interrupt him. I had a question in my mind, but I kept it to myself.

After a few seconds, Orcus looked up and resumed talking with his heavy voice, "I was given control over the power of Space and Time and I used that power to create portals across the universe, to further strengthen bonds and races. I allowed my brethren to control this power as well, to set a stage for various beings to reunite under the power of the Orcs. Hearing this, the God of War got upset. To know that Orcs were gaining privileges that the new Gods never received, angered him and his companions. Not talking with the God of War, was my first mistake as a God. The God of War slaughtered the orcs when I was on an expedition. By the time I reached my abode, my brethren were all dead. Loyal warriors, women, children; all mercilessly slaughtered. The God of War killed my brothers and sisters with the new Gods, all for the power, the power to control portals.

I looked at the God of War with hate, and killed the new Gods who fought alongside him. However, in the end, the God of War beat me in my weakened state. I have been lost in the depths of the underworld ever since."

Orcus turned around, and looked towards me. His expression denoted anger and sorrow and the same time. The God spoke, "And here's where you come in, the God in the prophecy. The Evil God that'll restore the power of the weak, the Evil God that WILL RETURN TO HIS THRONE."

Orcus bent down on his knees to somewhat adjust to my height. "A dead mortal cannot escape the realm of the underworld, nor can a dead God. However, you, you can change the world for the better, you can shatter the God of War that now possesses the control to the portals. Defeat him, and protect the weak, protect this universe."

Orcus stood up straight, and continued, "And for that, I, Orcus, one of the four Gods of the underworld, and the previous God of Time and Space, will train you."

After Orcus's long and informative monologue, I spoke, "I shall close all portals, and I'll end the rule of the God of War, however, for now, what I wish to know about, is your relation with the previous Evil God. So tell me, who was the God of Evil?"

I wished to know more of the prophecy as well, however, I never believed in fortune tellers. Of all things, I believed in myself more than a line of words. I believed in my actions, more than a prophecy.

Orcus spoke, "Before my death, I had a human disciple, and that, was the Evil God. He reigned well as a God. After spending 20 years as one, he slowly began to transform. He turned from a peaceful being to a monster. His transformation caused him to lash out on his own species, which brought about the end of the era of Gods. Ever since then, each being only served their selfish motives. I came to know of this from the other new Gods that had made their way to the underworld."

Orcus sighed, "I pity that brat. The inner demons of the brat will eventually fight against you too. I assume that is what brought you here.

Now that you've understood the functioning of the system and the wars fought by the Gods, it's time, that you arise. I'll train you over the course of 10 years, and I'll make sure you grow well as a God."

I asked, "So, where do we begin?"
