Mae, just like most kids her age, was cursing whoever invented school. She was currently deflated in the back corner of the classroom. She didn't even try to listen to what the teacher was trying to drill into the heads of the rest of the overly enthusiastic kids. Were all elite schools' students this happy to learn about how plants looked on the inside, or the human body parts? To her it all merged into one thing, work. Which in turn translated to energy consuming.
Not to mention the person in the room that was listening the most intently was her stupid twin that she was still slightly mad at. She pretended to be him when fighting and any physical test, but he was actually really hard working. It was really too bad he couldn't write her tests for her. She wasn't stupid per say… but she also wasn't naturally gifted. Why would she study when she could just peek at the handbooks for answers?
She spent her childhood trying to cultivate to be more lazy, while Ash studied like crazy. The pen she was playing with disintegrated in her palm and she reached for a new one and spun it around in thought.
She saw all the kids around her take out their books to write something that she missed. She tried to see what they were doing, but the voice of the teacher stopped her.
"Miss Mae. Is your cultivation level so high that you can separate your spirit from your body? This would require you to know how the whole human system works and be connected to the flow of life. If not, please at least try to look like you're trying to do something."
In fact she could do just that, but the teacher didn't give her time to respond.
"Of course I will give permission to skip my class for the rest of the year and get full marks if you can manage it."
Most of the kids laughed and snickered. All of them knew this girl never talked and never payed attention in any class. They weren't afraid to start gossiping about her.
"How could a person like this enter this prestigious academy?"
"Such a stain!"
"Isn't her twin The Asher Allard? She should try to follow his example."
"Obviously it's impossible to separate one's spirit and body before graduation! This teacher is making a joke of her."
"If we befriend her, we could get closer to her brother!"
The girl in question was about to show the teacher she could do it, but their gossip made her pause. Would showing them bring attention to her? She could at least sleep in class, if she got attention from the kids she'll end up like her brother! No, that was even worse than having class. She couldn't risk it. Low-key was the way to go.
She, who could flatten mountains with a wave, remove oceans and have tea in the clouds was feeling pressured with everyone's stares. Her expression was the same, no matter what was happening in her brain. So she just blanked out and nodded at the teacher, before lying on her arms to sleep. It was just her natural way of hiding, it just so happened to be one of the worst actions she could have taken.
The teacher was obviously trying to make an example of her and humiliate her, but now she completely ignored the whole speech and even did exactly what the teacher said not to do. In the eyes of the whole class, there was only one word to describe her actions. Shameless!
Meanwhile, her brother was trying to think of a way to save his sister from the gossip and teacher. He was at a loss for words. His sister was unmatched when it came to cultivating and fighting, but because of her childhood, she was terrible at socialising and lazy to a fault. He was surprised she even attended school.
He was about to say something, when she caught his eye while lying on her arms and smiled one of her signature lazy grins. She always did this when she was feeling comfortable or wanted to tell him she was fine. He was also proud to know that he was the only one that ever received that grin.
She was his twin and even if she was the most lazy person he had ever met, he was glad it kept her away from other guys and girls with bad intentions. They were twins after all and were much closer than they acted.
It warmed his heart to know that only a few things could make her fight. Someone insulting or trying to harm him, someone touching her books and if he asked her. Their parents were definitely not on that list and even if someone insulted her, she gave no indication that it affected her.
He smiled back at her, his one and only sibling. She who even cut her hair into the same hairstyle as his to look like him when fighting. He stood up and sent his chair falling to the ground and pretended to wobble and look pale. He grabbed his desk for extra effect and looked at the teacher tiredly.
"I don't feel well, can I go to the infirmary please?"
The teacher and all the students instantly jumped to help him. Their idol wasn't feeling well, of course they would try to help him as fast as possible. As everyone was scurrying around, they totally forgot about the girl that once again closed her eyes and smiled that lazy grin. Maybe she would forgive her brother this one time.
