Chapter 1 - A Hidden Feeling

Sophie Ricana sat under an old and withering willow tree. Close nearby was a large pond thriving with fish and geese swimming in its cold waters. In her hands was a book, read so many times over that the binding became loose. It was a simple journal, owned by her grandfather, James Morano. In it was records of his travels and everything that he found. Luckily he had decided to bring it with him when Diremoore Castle burned to the ground. Sophie remembered the time she had spent with him at this spot. Here he had trained her to use weapons and to make a weapon out of anything. She was only taught this for she was the only one in her bloodline to not inherit magic. Her father had no magic and her Great-Grandparents hated him. They shunned Sophie for having no magic. They wanted to keep their bloodline pure, not tainted with non-humans and non-magics. Sophie didn't care, she was happy that she got to spend more time with her grandfather. Sadly, four nights ago, James had passed away in his sleep. Sophie turned the next page and found it empty. She had read his last entry. She shut the book with a soft thud and tucked it gently into the pocket of her dress. Her dark brown hair began to move as the wind grew stronger. Sophie stood up with the help of the willow tree. She took a breath and closed her eyes. Around her the leaves shook and Animals walked through the forest. Even though Sophie had no magic, she felt a strong connection to nature. Animals would walk straight up to her, unafraid, no hesitation. Sophie opened her eyes. She shrieked and fell back against the tree and laughed.

"Nathan! What are you doing here!? You should be home. There's a storm rolling in," Sophie said kicking Nathan's ankle out from under him, sending him to the ground. "And that's for scaring me."

Nathan laughed and looked at Sophie. He smiled. He shook his head and scrambled up, holding out his hand to help Sophie up. She rolled her eyes and pulled her self up, brushing the grass off of her dress. Nathan smiled again.

"So, how are you doing with the uh...." Nathan said, hesitently.

"The breakup? Yeah I'm fine. I'm not sure if Carlos is though," Sophie said.

"Okay, that's good."

"We should probably get home."

"Yeah, do you want me to take you?" Nathan offered.

"Sure, I won't make it before the storm." Sophie replied. Nathan wrapped his arm around Sophie and looked at her. She nodded. Nathan expanded his wings and started to beat them together. He shot off into the sky with Sophie in his arms. They hovered for a few seconds and Sophie could see the village. Her parents had found the village under attack a few years before Sophie was born. They had saved the village and decided to take roots there. Luckily the village was close to where her great grandmother had gone during the fire at Diremoore. The house she lives in now had recently become big enough for her entire family.

Nathan flew towards her house and landed. He let go of Sophie, waved goodbye, and started to walk off. Sophie jogged after him and grabbed his arm. Nathan looked at her confused, his face seeming to ask what she wanted. Sophie pecked him on the cheek and waved goodbye. Nathan blushed and looked on as she went inside.
