Sophie and Nathan sat on a fallen log, their horses tied to a nearby tree. The sun had just started to fall behind the hills. They were about 2 days walk from their home. Sophie sat, facing away from Nathan, writing in her journal. Nathan peered over her shoulder to catch a glimpse at her writing. Sophie saw his face peek over her shoulder. She threw her elbow back and hit him in the stomach, "A little privacy please!" Nathan groaned and turned back around.
"Sorry, I wanted to know what you were writing," He said grasping his stomach.
"Well, you can't. I'd like to keep my thoughts private," Sophie replied shutting the journal. She tossed it into her bag and tied it shut. "I'm sorry that I hit you. It's just a reflex," Sophie said.
"It's okay. Could you teach me to fight?" Nathan said.
"What did you say?"
"Can you teach me to fight?"
"You want me to teach you how to fight? I couldn't even teach a squirrel," Sophie replied laughing.
"Sophie, please. You can fight really well, I've seen you practicing. I can't even fight off a cat, please..."
Sophie sighed, "You were spying on me?"
"Did I say I was spying on you!? Because I definitely wasn't!!" Nathan started to blush heavily.
"Nathan. You're blushing. Is there something you want to say?" Sophie said grabbing his hand. Nathan tugged away and stood up, looking away from Sophie.
"I- I don't think I should say anything anymore. I'm just going to ruin it...." Nathan said, walking away.
"Nathan, are you okay? You can talk to me.." Sophie said standing.
"I'm not okay and I'd rather not tell you what's going on.."
"Why not?"
"Because you are part of the problem! And I don't know how to tell you what I want to say!" Nathan yelled, turning back around. Sophie could see the tears streaming down his face.
"Nathan, I'm sorry," Sophie wrapped her arms around his waist, "I don't know what I did but I'm sorry for it." Nathan looked at her, wiped his tears, and hugged her back.
"Sophie, you don't have to apologize. This is a sort of a good problem." Nathan said releasing Sophie. She backed up and looked at Nathan. He was smiling now.
"You two are so cute together!" Said a voice from the woods. Sophie immediately pulled her sword out of it's home and stood ready in front of Nathan.
"Who are you?!" She yelled. A man walked out of the woods. His dead eyes stared at both of them. He smiled, crookedly.
"Your worst nightmare.." He said taking enough steps that he was right in front of Sophie's face. His finger traced her chin. His pointer and thumb grabbed her cheeks and squeezed. Sophie yelled and sliced with her sword. In one flick of a hand, Sophie and Nathan stood, frozen, their lips and tongue the only part still moving.
"What do you want?!" Nathan yelled.
"To scope out my prey, The woman of nature," He let go of Sophie, "And the man of night," He looked directly at Nathan. "I will wait to deliver your deaths until you have found your family. The child of light shall never be born!" The man said, cackling. He disappeared in a flash and Sophie and Nathan returned to normal.
"Nathan? Who was that? Are you okay?" Sophie said.
"I'm fine, and I have no idea. What does he mean "The child of light shall never be born"?" replied Nathan
"I... I don't know."
"We'll find out soon enough. You should get some sleep."
"Alright. Keep watch, okay?"
"I will. Now go to sleep."
