Chapter 2 - A Remembered Tragedy

Nathan stared as Sophie left him outside of her house. He lightly brushed the area where she had kissed him with his fingers. He sighed. It was only a few days until Sophie's birthday and he planned to confess. Nathan had fallen for Sophie the day they met. Sadly the first day he planned to confess she had just gotten in a relationship. He had never liked Carlos. There was always the feeling that Carlos wasn't right for Sophie. Nathan was right. Sophie caught Carlos having an affair with a random girl. It went all downhill from there. They had broken up and Sophie refused to leave her room for three weeks.

Nathan started to feel raindrops hit his smiling face. He turned around and started on his way home. His mind drifted from Sophie to getting home and back again.

The sun was starting to set and Nathan had arrived home. He lived a little ways away from the village. His mother was sitting outside, waiting for him. Her face had this look of worry. She saw Nathan just a couple feet from the house and stood up.

"NATHAN ELRIYAND! Where have you been! Your father and I were worried! You know not to stay out of the house past five! It's seven thirty!" His mother yelled. Nathan looked at her and rolled his eyes. "Don't you roll your eyes at me! Go inside and eat your dinner."

Nathan stormed inside and sat at the dining room table. His father was sitting on the other side reading a worn out book. His mother came inside and sat next to Nathan.

"Why do I have to follow all these stupid rules. They make no sense. I just want to spend more time with Sophie and my other friends," Nathan said to his mother.

"You know why Nathan!" She yelled back.

"Akila, don't be so hard on him. He's sixteen," Nathan's father said to Akila.

"Charles, I know that. Remember what happened when we were sixteen. You lost your wings and I lost my will to live. After it all happened, the torture, the pain, you pulled me out of it. I don't want any of that to happen to Nathan. There may not be anyone to pull him out," Akila started sobbing.

"Nathan, why don't you ask Sophie if you can stay at her place for the night. If you can just go on through the portal," Charles said as he started to wrap his arms around Akila. Nathan nodded and stood up. He retreated into his room.

He stood infront of his bed and started summoning a small portal, big enough for him to go through. The portal opened and he saw Sophie sitting on her bed. She was writing something down in a journal. Nathan cleared his throat. Sophie looked up at the sound and saw him.

"Hey Nathan. What's up?" Sophie said, closing the journal.

"I need to spend the night at your place. My mom... um... is having another breakdown," He replied.

"Oh, okay. I'll ask," She said standing up and leaving the room. A few minutes pass and Sophie came back in, "My parents said it was okay."

Nathan nodded and stepped through the portal.
