Chapter 7 - First Battle

As the realization that a monster had tore through my apartment looking for prey had finally hit me, fear also began settling in. Owslo was far to weak to fight anything but wildlife and this would be my first fight outside of personal training.

Death, I could die, this monster could devour my body and leave no trace behind.

Blood began rushing through my body, while more and more thoughts kept entering my body. I didn't have the chance to think to myself for very long, after a couple of second the monster showed itself once again.

Bursting through my back wall in a shower of wooden debris it roared to instill and even greater fear. It wanted me to know the damage it could cause.

My heart was beating so loud I thought that anyone withing a 5 foot radius could hear it. Thoughts became drowned out by the noise, and staring into the monster eye sockets made everything that much worse.

"Snap out of it, prepare to fight or else we're going to die," cried out Owlso.

As his voice broke through and reached my ears, I instinctively raised my great-sword into position, even if it was dulled I could still cause some damage.

"Thank you for that Owslo, get ready, any sort of support you can give me is helpful"

"I can only channel mana and turn some material into obsidian for about 10 seconds, although the bonding process isn't in effect I can only allow you to use this ability for 3 seconds."-Owslo

"Thats fine, make sure that no matter what you stay distanced from that thing, your far too weak to damage it."- Elias

"Yes, Master."

As we finished talking about our strategy, the lumbering foot steps of the monster began, it would only take around five steps for it to reach us. Instead of waiting Owslo hopped off my shoulder and I charged towards it. It seemed to be caught off guard because its foot steps stuttered for a slight second.

With every muscle in my body I swung the great-sword 4 steps before reaching the monster and slammed it where its ankle seemed to be. The monster roared in pain and it began tilting as a strange liquid came out from where I struck it.

Before I could let this small victory get to my head the monster lashed out its gnarled claws with a strange noise accompanying its attack. As it reached me I was able to lift my great-sword and use it as a shield to deflect some of the damage but the difference in physical power was astounding. I was blown away and the sound of metal and claws colliding rang my ears.

Despite the ringing and the aching of my wrists I was able to keep a grasp on my sword but I wasn't the only one recovering, the monster was quickly able to drop into a lower stance that looked menacing compared to the other stance. As its mouth opened and it revealed its horrifying teeth once again and actually smiled.

It was once of the most horrid sights I had ever witnessed and had it not been for the adrenaline coursing through my body, I would have fainted.

It ran towards me at an alarming rate, but instead of moving an idea entered my mind.

"Owslo, cast the spell now!"

Bringing the great-sword all the way back and tensing every muscle withing my back, I began slamming the sword downward.

Owslo let out a short howl and the edge of my sword became refined with obsidian and had a purple gleam coming of of it.

The monster wasn't stupid and changed its path but it was too little too late. The sword came down with all my might but only severed its right arm and leg.

I thought I was was the victorious one until I felt a burning sensation on my left side, a huge gash that began at my shoulder and ended at my knee was oozing blood. I tried picking up my sword and clearing some distance but I no longer had the strength to lift the greatsword due to its wieght.

"Owslo, grab my bow, we need to run while we have the chance."

"Your injured, we won't make it very far, plus that thing is dead, isn't it?"

As soon as he said that a howl of pain and anger could be hard from the monster body, It crashed into the tree after it was dismembered, but it was far from deaths doors.

After using some unknown method to locate me it began a to crawl. Limping away as fast as I could I managed to grab some arrows from my fallen quiver, and get to open ground a small distance from my house.

"Owslo, do you have the mana to use that ability again?"

"Yes, but only once and this time it will only last 2 seconds, or I will fall into mana deprivation."

"On my mark you'll activate it and hopefully we live to see another day."

looking a bit fearful, Owslo steeled himself for the sight of the monster, only to see it groaning in pain as it broke through my fence. Luckily the adrenaline gave me just enough pain nullification to tense my bow string. My first arrow dug itself into the creatures shoulder, instead of it becoming slower, this caused it to become faster.

"I-I can only shoot one more arrow, I'm loosing to much blood, your gonna have to cast your spell sooner than I planned."

"Just don't die, you have to take responsibility for bringing me into this world, Master."

"I'll do my best not to, but no promises."

With the last of strength i pulled back the bow string as far as I could and let the arrow soar. Before I could tell him to do it, Owslo casted his ability and the arrow began to whistle as it gained speed.

My eyelids became heavy and my body grew cold, the world began turning dark but the arrow never stopped shining as it traveled through the air.

Before I collapsed, I saw the arrow tear through the monsters eye socket and come out the other side. "If this is my last feat as a living being, so be it, at least I'm not the only bastard dying today," I thought to myself before blacking out.
