Chapter 14
The two managed to escape the forest the following morning, Varian was still a little shaken up about the night before, but felt better with Hugo by his side still. However, Hugo was feeling guilty, he had no idea what to do, tonight was the night of the full blue moon, he knew that Varian was running out of time and that he would experience pain, emotional pain, he knew he needed to betray him to protect the Dark Kingdom from Ulla and Varian himself and so he can keep his home, but Varian was too pure for anymore pain, he didn't deserve any of this. Hugo cleared his throat as he and Varian carefully shuffled within the town of the Dark Kingdom, looking for the gates of the Eternal Library and he asked, "Goggles.. What do you think of Donella??" He knew Varian was upset hearing that name as he explained, "I believe she was who kept my mother from me, she did something to trap her in the Library and keep her away from me and my father.. She is the one to blame for leaving me behind, not my mother herself." Hugo shuddered hearing this, "Great, now he'll hate me even more, that's fun." He thought. It was sundown when Varian and Hugo finally reached the gates and they saw that Ulla's diary was in the exact same spot it was left 16 years ago. "There it is.. My mother's diary!!" Varian exclaimed as he ran toward it, "With the incantation, I can open the library until dawn of tomorrow morning, this is it, I'm bringing my mother home!" Hugo prepared to snatch it from him, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Except in that moment, the trauma from street life came flooding in, feeling pressure build up, so he narrowed his eyes, and tried to steal the diary from Varian's hands. "Hugo? What are you doing?!" Varian demanded, trying to hold on, but a second pair of hands came from the shadows and helped Hugo claim it, a few pages ripping out of it. "Nice work child.." The other person with Hugo told him, taking the diary herself. "Master.." Hugo said, bowing to her as he felt the regret pile inside of him. "Hugo.. Who's this??" Varian asked suspiciously but desperately. "Why boy, I'm Donella, the one who raised Hugo, and we're afraid we can't let you bring your mommy back." She said. "Wait.. Hugo, you.. You've been working with her this whole time?!" Varian yelled. Hugo was silent, he didn't say a word. "Donella grabbed out a matchbox and set the diary on fire, right before Varian's eyes. "No, stop!" Varian cried. Hugo squeezed his eyes shut, trying not to break down. "Don't you get it? We used you Child.. Now, you know of all Hugo's lies." Donella taunted as she tossed the burning diary on the ground, smiling wickedly. She began to walk toward the gates while Hugo turned to Varian, who looked up at him with hatred in his eyes, one now completely light blue. "Goggles.. I.." Hugo tried to start but Varian interrupted and said, "Don't. Please don't. You know, it's taken me so long to learn to trust somebody again, and I thought I finally could, but you've proven me wrong! I.. I hate you, and I don't know why I was ever friends with someone like you, you're just the bad guy!" Varian then unfolded one of the ripped pages, and began reading the incantation. "Varian, no!" Hugo called out, but he ignored him. "Gate of Knowledge, heed my plea; Unlock the library, set wisdom free." Varian read as the library opened. "Goggles please!" Hugo begged. "My name is not Goggles, it's Varian." He enunciated before stepping into the library, Donella calling out Hugo's name. TO BE CONTINUED...
