Chapter 23 - Class Battles

"What is it?"

Scar walked around the table and leaned on it before he nodded his chin at Jane to tell her to speak.

Jane spoke up.

"Sir—"

"What did I tell you to call me?"

"S-Sorry. Mr. Scar, can you please tell us about the grading system in high school? I heard students are graded with both academics and physical evaluation?"

Scar was a bit irritated since that was the next thing he was going to talk about anyway, but he decided not to say anything to Jane and just turned to the class once more. Terra would be on his case again if he made more children cry like last year.

"You'll all be graded by two methods. The first is a series of exams taken while you go through your year. One exam will be taken once a month, and another exam will be taken at the end of the year. Take them seriously; they're important. The second grading method is your combat ranking. After each weekly combat class and bi-weekly training, you will be graded based on how each of you contributed to the training. Then, at the end of each month, the two first-year classes will hold a joint training exercise where you will be pitched against each other. I'm going to say this now. I do not lose. Ever. So my class does not have the right to lose either. If you don't beat B Class in that training exercise, forget about surviving until the next training exercise. I'll put you through worse things than hell itself.

"When all of that is done, you will have your points tallied and displayed on the school boardroom as the student ranking. The students in your year with the top three highest points will each gain a reward from the school, so let your competitive spirit burn at its brightest. And on that note, I believe it is time for your first class. I'll see you all tomorrow, little killers."

Scar grabbed his book from the table and waved it toward the kids before he started to walk out of the room without bothering to wait for a response.

Once he was gone, the students all turned to look at each other in surprise and confusion. The quick destruction of many of their fantasies about what they were going to be doing in high school and the lack of any friendliness from their homeroom teacher was like whiplash for them, and they were still reeling from it.

Many of the students thought that high school was just going to be a continuation of what they had done in middle school. They would have a few classes and work out in the gym before training with their God Aspect! They never thought it would be this intense!

"I guess what the seniors said about Mr. Scar is correct. I heard he was a monster, but I didn't think he'd be this bad."

"Did you hear him talk about sex earlier? Can a teacher even say that in class? I thought it was against the law."

"Man, now I won't get to go out with my girlfriend next weekend! I thought high school was going to be like middle school. Why do I have to work this hard?"

"What do you think he meant when he said we were going to fight against B Class? Like some sort of battle royale?"

"No, I heard about it from some of the other seniors. They said it'll be different each time. Most of the time, they just pick out the best from each class for a contest, and at other times, it's a massive training session where grades are passed out based on how each individual does."

"Oh, like that old show Squid Game?"

"Uh… yeah, just like Squid Game. Dude, how do you even remember that? That show's like thirty years old now!"

All the students in the class had started to converse amongst themselves happily once more, and it wasn't long before they put what Scar had said out of their minds. To kids like these, the promise of danger wasn't really enough to frighten them because they had never truly faced anything dangerous before. Scar was telling them about things that were essentially fantasy to them, so until they faced the first real experience of his words in the form of action, they wouldn't even take it seriously.

Azrael was reading through one of the books that they had been given to study on his tablet when he noticed someone walk up to him. Azrael looked up, and once more, he saw that it was Jane Ashton who had come up to him. This was getting out of hand!

Azrael frowned as he sat up, and Jane ignored his frown before speaking up.

"I want to talk to you later, after class. Can you meet me on the roof of the school building?"

"Huh…?"

Azrael couldn't have been more shocked even if he tried! Of all the things he expected to hear come out of Jane's mouth, meeting her on top of the school building was the last thing he thought he would hear! Why in the world did she want to talk to him all of a sudden?

Azrael suddenly noticed that most of the class had gone silent, and they were all now staring at the both of them. Azrael turned his eyes toward them with a glare, forcing most of them to turn away quickly!

Azrael glared up at Jane.

"What do you want to talk about?"

Jane shook her head before she started walking away while talking.

"Not here. Come to the school roof later. I'll tell you then."

Azrael's frown deepened at the casual dismissal from her! What the fuck did Jane think he was? Her dog?

Why the hell would she talk to him like that when they hadn't even had a single rational conversation in more than a year!?

Azrael could feel anger and irritation bubbling up from inside him, and the [Oathkeeper] resting in his Divine Storage began to hum in response to the anger that Azrael was feeling! It slowly started to turn that anger into pure bloodlust, and Azrael had to grit his teeth and suppress it when he felt it trying to overwhelm him.

'Fuck.'

Azrael cursed in irritation as he put his head down on his desk while taking in deep breaths, and a loud voice echoed from the front.

"Oooohh~! Is the princess trying to make a secret meeting with the stableboy? Look at this shit! She said 'meet me on the roof' like they're Romeo and Juliet! It's fucking hilarious!"

Gerald's loud voice echoed through the class, and most of their classmates also laughed at the analogy, but Jane just turned her head to glare at Gerald in anger.

Gerald raised his hands in surrender with a wide grin on his face.

"Oh, come on, princess. Are you going to attack this poor footsoldier for his words?"

"Shut up, Jerry."

"Oooooh~!"

The class released a collective sound when they heard Jane lash back. Jane's tone was piercing, and Gerald felt all the humor in his face die out once she called him Jerry. Who the fuck gave her the right to call him that?! No one could call him that!

He was about to stand up and face her angrily, but another person entered the room before he could do that!

Ka-Cha!

"Alright, everyone, please settle down."
