Chapter 29 - Interpreters

Maddison began talking after taking a bite and savoring the taste of the noodles.

"They won't be able to find any other leads since you're the one that did it. So they'll most likely call in an interpreter."

Azrael frowned.

"A what? Like a language interpreter?"

Maddison shook her head.

"No, these ones are different. There's a group of Demigods who have God Aspects that would allow them to solve crimes easier. They mostly have blessings from gods of morality or virtue, like Aletheia or Veritas, the gods of truth. They could also have God Aspects from people like Freya or Odin. This allows them to peel back lies, and they'll be able to tell if anyone has committed a particular crime. Right now, the only interpreter that is working with the police is a woman named Romanov. She's blessed by Aletheia, and she has a God Aspect that prevents anyone from lying to her."

Azrael cursed and ran a hand through his hair. That could spell trouble. If Azrael stood in front of a living lie detector, then there was no chance he would be able to get out of there without them finding out he did it.

And now, Azrael faced another difficult choice.

Did he want to stay in school at all?

One way of ensuring that he was never caught was by simply disappearing. There were many demigods who never finished Divine Academy and dropped out long before they graduated. What if Azrael joined their ranks and simply went into the underworld? It would save him the trouble of hiding his actions from anyone.

'No, I can't do that. Not yet.'

Azrael discarded that idea once it appeared. As he was now, Azrael was still weak. He was so pathetically weak that he would lose against even the weakest student among the second years. That was not the sort of person who wanted to go and join the underworld.

Once Azrael was out there, then everyone would be after him. Leaving school would basically confirm that he was the one who killed Francis, and the police and other Divine Enforcers would make sure they used everything at their disposal to capture him.

The school acted as a form of shield for Azrael now. It was not perfect, but at least this way, he was going to be treated as a student rather than a criminal, and even though they were suspicious of him, they couldn't act rashly because he was protected by the school. As a student of a school as prestigious as this one, there were more benefits to be seen than disadvantages.

So now, Azrael needed to come up with a plan.

Azrael went silent for a while as he just stared into the distance of the cafeteria. The large hall took up half of the ground floor in the school. There was a long table filled with different cuisines on one side of the hall with various cooks dishing out food to any student that needed it. The students were allowed to eat whatever they wanted since all the meals had already been well-balanced out for the week. And since they were all demigods who needed far more food than regular humans, each portion of food was served on a very large plate.

Maddison finished off Azrael's meal quickly and used a tissue to clean her mouth before releasing a cute burp that made her face flare up in a blush. Maddison looked up at Azrael to see if he noticed, but Azrael wasn't even paying attention to her as he was deep in thought.

Finally, after he had properly sorted his thoughts, Azrael asked some questions.

"You said there was only one interpreter available?"

Maddison nodded.

"Yeah, all the others are in the Divine Enforcers, and they're too far away from the city. It'll take at least a month for the police to call one of the others. The closest interpreter lives here in City S."

"And you're sure they'll use her?"

"They have to. It's the only way they can find out the truth after they fail to find any clues. In fact, I think the Colts will pay a lot of money just to make sure they use her."

"Do you know where she stays?"

Maddison raised a brow when she heard Azrael ask this question. She had no idea what Azrael was trying to find out, and she just decided to go along with him and see what he was planning.

"No, I don't know. But it shouldn't be hard to find it. She's very popular, so there should be information about her online."

Azrael nodded and finished the drink that came with his food before speaking.

"We need to find out where she stays before the weekend."

The bell for lunch rang again to tell the students to get back to class, and Maddison quickly spoke when she saw Azrael standing up.

"Wait. What are you planning to do?"

Azrael furrowed his brow in surprise.

"What do you mean by that? Isn't it obvious? I'm going to kill her."

Maddison blinked in shock at Azrael's nonchalant answer. Maddison had already guessed that Azrael was planning something like this, but she never thought that Azrael would treat it as something so simple. It was almost like Azrael was talking about the weather instead of taking someone's life!

Maddison knew that Azrael was a cold-blooded killer, but knowing something and seeing the proof of it right in front of you were two different things entirely. There was a strange feeling in Maddison's chest that came to life once she realized just what she had gotten herself into, and Maddison swallowed as heat pooled in her cheeks.

Maddison nodded in agreement.

"Okay. What can I do to help?"

Once Azrael got back to class, he was immediately cornered at his seat by Jane Ashton once more. Jane had a furious look on her face as she glared down at Azrael, and Azrael just stared up at her calmly while wondering what the hell she thought she was doing.

"Where were you? I thought we agreed to meet on the roof."

Azrael tilted his head to one side.

"I don't remember agreeing to anything."

"You…!"

Jane gained a huge blush of embarrassment on her face when she saw Azrael simply disregarding her! Jane told him to meet her on the roof during lunch, and she had been waiting up there for an entire hour thinking that he was going to come! She didn't even get to eat anything because she was waiting for him, and he was just going to act like he didn't do anything wrong!?

Jane had been planning to say this when it was just the two of them since she didn't want it to seem like she was pressuring Azrael into agreeing with her, but she decided to just say what she wanted to now since they were both there.

Jane spoke up in a low voice so that only Azrael would hear her.

"I have an offer for you. My father knows the head of the police academy, and he's always looking for new recruits. He says that if you sign up now, then you can leave Divine Academy and join the police academy instead."
