Chapter 3 - Revelations

Kylie thought perhaps she was finally going to die because of the excruciating pain that threatened to split her skull in two.

She passed out immediately, the screams in the background fading away as her soul floated, finally free from the pain.

When she opened her eyes again, she was in a blank space, with just a single light ahead of her. Confused, she started walking towards the light, wondering what was going on. Before she could reach the light, the pain assaulted her again, causing her to fall to her knees and scream out loud.

As fast as it had come, the pain went away and that was when she finally saw it. The memories that had been piercing her brain finally revealed itself.

It was a memory of a girl named Ayla.

She was a princess who once had everything she wanted, including a loving family. The happy life she once knew changed overnight when her town was attacked by a deadly plague that left nothing but piles of dead bodies in its wake.

Ayla barely survived but lost her parents and everyone else she once knew at a tender age. She was just 10 years old when it happened. She thought things were starting to look up when she was adopted by a family from the neighboring town.

Her new mother, Mrs Cecily hated Ayla with every fiber of her being because years ago, when she had been a teen, Ayla's parents had refused to lend her dad some money after he lost everything through gambling.

Her dad had been left with nothing because no one helped. He had been warned several times to stop gambling but he always refused, pushing the warnings behind his ears. They later had to live with the poorest in the streets like beggars.

What pissed her off the most was the fact that her husband, Mr Sage, loved Ayla, even more than their own daughter.

Mrs Cecily thought of ways to eliminate Ayla in a subtle way so no fingers would point to her. So, over the years, she had quietly poisoned Ayla, adding the nasty white powder to her food in small quantities.

Over time, Ayla would fall sick but they never took her to the hospital. Mrs Cecily made sure to make her husband believe it was nothing serious, probably symptoms from being a plague survivor.

She would also call a quack doctor to the house to take a look at the sick girl.

Because of the toxins of the poison, Ayla didn't grow to be like her mates. She looked frail, small and powerless. Her skin was always pale from always being indoors. When she wasn't being bullied by her peers for her looks, she was being bullied in the house for existing.

Mrs Cecily was the happiest woman on earth when she got to know from a secret reliable source that there was actually a treasure that belonged to Ayla. The treasure would only be accessed when she became of age and married.

Acting fast, she got a pawn to do her dirty business for her. The guy was to act like he loved Ayla and make her fall in love with him. On their wedding night, he would give her the highest dose of the poison to turn her into a vegetable, while they enjoyed her treasure.

The plan worked perfectly because Ayla entered their trap blindly, like the pathetic girl she was. You can't blame her, who wouldn't be swept off their feet when a gentleman suddenly dots on them like they were the only girl in town. Her heart yearned for love because it was the one thing she craved for everyday. She just wanted to be loved by anyone, even if by her new family.

Things moved fast and before Ayla knew, Caleb proposed and she finally felt maybe, just maybe, she wasn't as useless as she had been meant to believe. She gladly accepted as she felt like the luckiest girl in town.

That night, Caleb had offered her a glass of wine and she happily collected, still fawning over Caleb, butterflies erupting in her stomach and her heart swelling with so much love for him.

Her happiness was short-lived when her heartbeat increased drastically at first, beating hard and painfully against her chest. This was one of the symptoms she always had whenever she suddenly felt sick but this was more severe.

The pain was so severe she couldn't utter a single word. The glass fell from her pale fingers as she gasped, fighting for her next breath. Her eyes shone with unshed tears as she tried to force the choked air out of her nose. She tried to reach out to Caleb but was Confused when she saw him just sitting there, watching her with excited but calculative eyes.

She groaned as she fell to the ground, her eyes widely opened in shock as she kept staring at a cool and collected Caleb who leisurely sipped his wine like he was seeing a movie.

With mouth open but with no words coming out, Ayla passed away, her heart burning with bitterness and rage at the realization that Caleb killed her on purpose. But why? She just wanted to be loved and he had only come to get rid of her? What did she ever do to die like this?.

After the girl finally passed away, Caleb hurriedly called Mrs cecily. Though he wasn't scared in any way even as Ayla died before his very eyes, he was surprised. It was never the plan to kill her, they only wanted to damage her and turn her to a vegetable till she finally wasted away.

Mrs Cecily came and saw that Ayla was gone. She admitted that she might have put an overdose of the poison into her wine but it still works just fine. Nobody would care about her anyways.

Kylie cried as she continued seeing everything, her heart bleeding for the innocent girl and for the injustice that was done to her. All she ever wanted was to be loved by her family but instead, they used and killed her.

She tightened her fist in pure rage as she remembered just how she was pushed off a cliff by her fiancée also. Both of them have been wronged and she was going to make sure nobody goes free. She would stop at no end to avenge their unjust death.

The light that had been at the other far end suddenly reached out to her and she gladly welcomed it. Opening her eyes again, she woke up to the annoying beeping of the monitor beside her bed.
