Chapter 1 - Betrayal

The night was cool and silent, exuding a serene atmosphere. Two people walked hand in hand. One seemed calm and collected, while the other was almost bouncing with excitement.

Kylie felt complete as she celebrated her engagement to the love of her life. She chuckled excitedly, swinging her boyfriend's hand and smiling gently at him. Although she had been trained never to let her guard down, tonight she chose to let go—it was her night.

"This feels so good," she said, doing a little happy dance as they continued walking. She paused for a moment when her boyfriend, Derek, remained silent, his expression a little bit dazed…and cold?

He has been silent all this while for some unknown reasons, but she knew he was probably just as excited as her, except that he doesn't want to show it. Well, she wasn't the type to show too much emotion either, but tonight was just so unreal!

"Don't you think so baby?" she asked.

He looked at her and nodded, his magnetic voice grazing her ears and heart. "I do."

"Actually, I couldn't imagine it either. I still remember vividly that day we met. Do you remember?" She looked at him in the eyes, her eyes twinkling like stars. "You were wearing a blue suit with a golden butterfly-shaped brooch. You were the most handsome man I'd ever seen..." Her eyes sparkled as she recounted, even her colleagues were totally drawn to him.

"Oh," was all he replied.

"Do you remember the first thing you said to me? 'Hello, Miss Kylie, I'm—'"

"I remember everything, babe. You've told me this story a thousand times," Derek interrupted, a tinge of impatience in his tone.

Kylie's forehead slowly furrowed into frowns, and she paused. "What happened, babe? Why are you sounding so… unexcited?"

This was unusual for him. Derek had proposed to her that evening, and they were on their way to a secluded place he had reserved for them. Shouldn't he be as excited as she was? Even if he wasn't, he doesn't have to be sounding so harsh with her.

A glint flashed past his blue orbs, which she unfortunately missed, otherwise she would have turned on her heels.

He gave a sigh and patted her head. Leaning closer and looming over her with his superior height. "I'm excited too, baby. I can never imagine this day, if someone tells me that one day, I will be an engaged man, and engaged to Kylie Jones at that, I would have dismissed it… but now, here I am… rings on our fingers , tied for eternity."

A faint sigh of relief escaped Kylie's lips as she gave a smile. "Mmm, me too. I can never imagine it, but here we are."

"Yes, here we are."

They both chuckled and continued walking forward. Any off feelings have now been washed to nothing.

"How much farther do we have to walk?" A few seconds later, Kylie couldn't help but ask. Not that she was tired, no, her physique was excellent.

Well, he made a promise to her before they came here.

She wrapped her arms around his waist, batting her eyelashes flirtatiously. "You promised to make me scream tonight, do you remember?"

"Yes I do, baby girl." He chuckled, his eyes filled with deep meaning. He placed his fingers on her lips. "And I intend to keep that promise, I'ill make you scream, for real."

She rolled her eyes, "As long as you don't forget your promise… for I'm feeling like where we are going is going to take eternity to get there." she complained grumpily, pinching her nose with dissatisfaction. They had left the organizations some minutes ago and now had ventured into the woods. Both of them are nature lovers after all. But the fuck, where he was going right now she couldn't comprehend.

"We're almost there." he responded patiently.

Finally, they arrived at their destination, and Kylie felt a pang of disappointment. They had come all this way just to stand by a cliff?

"I never know you liked cliffs," She mumbled, looking around.

"I'm making an exception today." Derek replied, standing firm behind her.

"Great exception." Kylie said, feigning excitement.

It wasn't that she was picky, but who takes their fiancée to a cliff after getting engaged? Scanning the area one more time, she suddenly sensed something was off. She was an assassin and had spent years on high-stakes missions. The silence of the night, the lack of insect sounds, and the stillness in the air all felt wrong, as though nature itself was holding its breath.

"What's wrong?" Derek's voice pulled her back to reality. She resolved to drop her suspicions and enjoy the evening.

"Nothing, babe," she replied, smiling as she stepped closer to him. Wrapping him in a hug, she relished the warmth of his stiff body.

Derek gently pulled away and led her closer to the edge of the cliff.

"Why are you acting so weird?" she asked, growing uneasy.

"Don't you want to scream?" he whispered seductively into her ears.

Every cell in Kylie's body screamt something was wrong, and she placed her arms onto his chest to refrain from being pushed back further. "I don't think you want me to scream by pushing me off the cliffs, do you?" She wanted to make it a joke, but her body turned stiff when she saw him smile.

"That's probably why we are lovers. You can read my mind."

"What?" At this point, Kylie would be a fool to not know something was wrong.

She immediately got defensive and tried to swiftly change their position, but he wouldn't budge and remain firm. And the more she wrestled him, the closer she was to plunging down.

"I'm sorry, but I have to let you go. I never loved you—this was just business."

Her heart sank as the words hit her. She stared into his eyes, desperately searching for any sign he was joking. Finding none, her chest tightened.

"I—I don't understand," she stammered, looking for an escape route. But Derek had positioned her where he could easily push her over the edge before she could react.

"I never loved you," he said coldly, his expression turning stoic. Two figures emerged from the shadows behind him, blocking her only path to safety.

"D-Derek, what's going on? Is this some kind of joke?" she asked, her voice trembling. Her mind raced for a way out, but her thoughts were clouded by disbelief. She had been with this man for three years, had just gotten engaged to him that night, and was even carrying his child—a surprise she had planned to share with him later.

"You're going to die anyway, so I might as well tell you the truth," Derek said, his tone indifferent. "I don't love you. No one does. The organization wanted you gone quietly, without suspicion, and I was sent to do it. It took time to win you over, but it was worth it."

Derek laughed maniacally, as though relishing his betrayal.

"I don't believe you! Why would the organization want me dead? I've served them my entire life! I loved you!" Kylie cried. Reality began sinking in as she realized escape was impossible. The assassins flanking Derek were among the best, and though she was skilled, it was three against one.

"Enough talk. I'm sorry, but this is goodbye," Derek said. Before she could react, the ground beneath her exploded, sending debris flying. She lost her footing and tried to run, but it was too late. Derek had expertly disarmed her, ensuring she was defenseless.

The last thing she saw was Derek's sadistic smile as she plunged into the abyss. Her scream caught in her throat as gravity pulled her downward. She clutched her stomach, mourning the life of her unborn child, who would never know joy or love.

Kylie's chest burned with rage and a desire for vengeance. She squeezed her eyes shut as her consciousness faded.
