Aurora James - POV
"But we could try to be a good mate for her," Ares growled when I felt sadness engulf him.
"I have too many enemies who are after my head. And you can see that very well, Ares. We have no idea who is after her, and I can see the panic in her eyes. I don't want her to live the rest of her life on edge, Ares. I know it hurts to see her with someone else, but I think I have decided to let her go. It would be better that way."
"But she is…"
"I think Adam was right, Ares. We should stay away from her. And I think I should just let her go."
My eyes clouded in tears as I felt this tightness in my chest. All this while, I thought that Zander hated me, but all he was trying to do was protect me. But I don't think I will allow him to reject me, we are in this together. "Why are you crying?" I was broken out of my trance when I turned around to face him.
"Nothing, I think something got into my eye," I told him as I rubbed my eyes and got up from the ground. A frown appeared on his face at my actions. "Zander, could you answer honestly?" I asked him when he got up from the ground as well.
"What is it?"
"Do you truly hate me?" I asked him when I saw the pain flash through his eyes before he masked his emotions.
"I don't want a mate, Aurora. I just love my life the way it is. Sleeping with a different woman every day. But when you came along…" I raised my hand, stopping him midway. I don't think I want him to lie to my face anymore.
"Thank you for the clarification," I told him as I walked into the forest.
"You should have told him that we know how he feels, Aurora," Lily whined in my head, but I ignored her comment. Right now, Zander is set on believing his insecurities, and even if I tell him that I read his mind, he would either call me crazy or simply, tell me that it is better if we break our bond, and I don't want that to happen right now.
"I think we should show him what he would miss if he rejects us," I said when I reached the doors.
"What are you talking about?" Lily asked me when a smirk formed on my face.
"You will see," I said as I walked inside and made my way upstairs. As I reached my room, I removed my shoes, and fell back on the bed, instantly falling asleep.
I usually find the sounds of birds calming, but right now, it has become a nuisance to me as I groaned and tried to get back to sleep. I was almost drifting back to sleep when it began singing again, and I finally gave up trying to fall back asleep and opened my eyes to a beautiful view of the forest outside.
There was a shroud of mist covering the canopy of the forest as I felt the chills of the weather down to my bones. I got up from my bed, went straight to the bathroom, and took a shower. As I walked outside, I saw my phone ringing. As I picked it up, a smile appeared on my face when I saw the caller ID.
"Hello, mom," I said with glee.
"Oh, you remember who I am?" she sarcastically replied, which made me roll my eyes.
"I was a little caught up with work. Anyway, how are you? And how are things over there?" I asked her as I walked into my closet and browsed through my clothes.
"I am fine, sweetie. And things in here are getting lively," she answered as I picked a black pencil skirt and paired it with a grey silk blouse.
"What does that mean?"
"I told you that Alpha Alonso was a little worked up when he came back home, right?" she asked me.
"Yes."
"But right now, he is all smiles, and he called an official pack meeting last night." she paused, letting the words sink in. "Scarlet was also with him, and he finally announced that they would be getting married next month, and she would be his Luna." Mom sounded a little worried as she told me this news, while I quickly put on my clothes and walked to my dressing table. I placed the phone on the table and put it on speaker as I took my hairbrush to comb my hair.
"That's a good thing, mom. I mean, he has finally realized that I am not good enough for him and the pack and decided to take her as the Luna. But why are you worried about that?"
"His behavior changed in a week, Aurora. I don't know why, but I have this gut feeling that something is going to happen," she exclaimed when I saw my favorite chocolate inside my bag. I took it out and popped it into my mouth as I listened to her.
"Relax, mom. If something does happen, I think I can take care of myself." I told her, and even though she was not satisfied with my answer, she didn't say anything more.
"Okay, sweetie. I think we can let time decide then."
"Yes, I will talk to you later, Mom," I told her as I finished my makeup and grabbed my handbag.
"Sure, have a nice day, Aurora."
"You too, Mom," I told her, and the line was disconnected. I walked out of my room and made my day to my office when I saw that Zander was already in there. I placed my handbag on the floor and began my work.
Two hours passed by when the landline rang. "Hello, Aurora James speaking, how…"
"Can you come to my office, Aurora?" Zander said, and before I could answer, the line was soon disconnected. I felt my heart sink to the pit of my stomach when I realized something. He didn't ask me to bring anything, and this would only mean that he was going to go through with his rejection.
