Adeline's vision began to blur, the only thing she could hear being the sound of crunching metal and shattering glass. The car finally came to a halt, slamming sideways into a massive tree. The roof crumpled against the trunk, leaving the vehicle lying on its side with smoke hissing from the engine. The car was a complete mess, but somehow the classical music continued to play.
Inside the car, Enzo's eyes fluttered open. A sharp pain shot through his head, and he reached up, feeling the warm, sticky trail of blood running down his face. He groaned, blinking rapidly until his surroundings came into focus.
He glanced down and saw Adeline cradled against him, her body curled into his. Her eyes shut tight as soft grunts of pain escaped her lips. Luckily, his body had successfully shielded her during the fall.
