Chapter 16 - The Day of Results

The college campus buzzed with energy as students gathered in the courtyard, eagerly awaiting the results of the student council election. The sun was high, casting a warm glow over the cheerful faces of students chatting, laughing, and speculating about who would win.Ling was standing near the stage, looking composed as usual. She was talking with a group of professors, who seemed impressed by her poise and dedication. Though she exuded confidence, Ling's fingers occasionally tapped against her side—a subtle sign of her nervousness.Meanwhile, Orm was on the other side of the courtyard, sitting with her friends in the shade of a large tree. She was back to her usual self, joking and chatting animatedly, though her eyes occasionally flickered toward Ling."I don't get why we even have to wait," Orm said, biting into a sandwich. "We all know Ling's going to win."Phon, now awkwardly keeping his distance from everyone after his recent humiliation, muttered from a nearby bench, "It's not over until it's over."The atmosphere was lively. Some students had brought instruments, strumming guitars and singing while waiting for the announcement. Others were taking selfies and making bets on who would win. Sia and Tina, ever the organizers, were circulating among the students, rallying support for Ling one last time."Vote Ling! Oh wait, that's already done," Tina joked, handing out leftover campaign pamphlets just for fun.Nod and Saint had joined the gathering as well, bringing snacks for everyone. Saint was busy feeding Sia chips while she glared at him for messing up her notes, and Nod was scrolling through his phone, checking memes with Tina.Orm, lounging lazily under the tree, suddenly sat up when a student ran by shouting, "They're about to announce the results!"Her heart leaped. "Finally!" she exclaimed, standing up so quickly she nearly tripped over a root. The crowd gathered around the stage as the head professor stepped up to the microphone, holding an envelope with the results."Thank you all for your participation in this year's student council election," he began, his voice calm and formal. "It has been a pleasure to see the enthusiasm and dedication of our candidates."The crowd murmured with excitement as he opened the envelope. Ling stood quietly at the side of the stage, her hands clasped in front of her, her expression unreadable."And now, the results," the professor said, glancing at the paper. "Your new student council president is… Ling!"The crowd erupted into cheers, the sound echoing across the campus. Students began chanting her name, and banners with her name were raised high in the air.The moment Orm heard the announcement, she bolted toward the stage, weaving through the crowd as quickly as she could. "LING!" she shouted, her voice barely audible over the noise.Ling turned just in time to see Orm barreling toward her. Before she could react, Orm threw her arms around her in an attempt to pick her up."Congratulations!" Orm cried, her arms wrapped tightly around Ling's waist as she tried to lift her off the ground. But Ling didn't budge."Orm, what are you doing?" Ling asked, laughing."I'm trying to pick you up!" Orm grunted, her face turning red with effort."Well, clearly it's not working," Ling teased, patting Orm's head. "Maybe try eating more spinach first?"Orm pouted, letting go and stepping back. "You're just too heavy.""Excuse me?" Ling raised an eyebrow, feigning offense. "I'm perfectly fit, thank you very much.""Yeah, yeah," Orm muttered, crossing her arms. "You're fit… and impossible to lift."The crowd around them laughed, the playful exchange only adding to the celebratory mood. After the results were announced, the group insisted on a celebration. "We're going out for dinner," Sia declared. "No excuses!""Yeah," Tina agreed. "Ling, you're treating us. You're president now!"Ling sighed but smiled. "Fine. But only if Orm doesn't try to pick me up again."Orm smirked. "No promises."The group headed to a nearby restaurant after college, filling a large table with laughter and chatter. Plates of food were passed around, and everyone was in high spirits. As the celebration went on, Orm and Ling's usual banter started up again."Ling, pass the fries," Orm said, reaching for the plate in front of Ling.Ling raised an eyebrow. "Say 'please.'""Just give me the fries!" Orm said, grabbing for the plate.Ling smirked and slid the plate out of reach. "Not until you say 'please.'""Fine," Orm said, rolling her eyes. "Please, Your Majesty."Ling laughed and handed her the plate, but not before tossing a single fry at Orm's face."Oh, it's on," Orm said, grabbing a piece of bread and tossing it back at Ling. What started as a small tease quickly escalated into a full-blown food fight between the two. Ling flung a spoonful of mashed potatoes at Orm, who retaliated with a sprinkle of rice."Do you two ever act like adults?" Tina asked, shaking her head as she dodged a stray piece of bread."Nope," Sia replied, ducking under the table. "And I don't think they ever will."The other customers in the restaurant looked on with a mix of amusement and exasperation as Ling and Orm continued their playful battle. As the food fight began to wind down, Ling leaned in close to Orm, her voice low and teasing. "You know, I'll treat you separately later. Just the two of us."Orm froze, her eyes widening. Without warning, she wrapped her arms around Ling and hugged her tightly, her face lighting up with excitement."Ling, you're the best!" Orm exclaimed, leaning in and biting Ling's cheek gently."Hey!" Ling protested, though she was laughing. The rest of the group groaned in unison, shielding their eyes."Do it at home!" Sia shouted, throwing a napkin at them.Tina sighed dramatically. "Seriously, nothing is ever going to change with these two."After the chaotic celebration, the group returned home, exhausted but happy. Sia and Tina plopped onto the couch with their boyfriends, while Orm and Ling retreated to their room.As Orm lay on the bed, she looked up at Ling, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "So, about that separate treat…"Ling smirked, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "Later, dummy. For now, get some rest. You've had enough excitement for one day."Orm pouted but smiled, grabbing Ling's hand and pulling her down beside her. "Fine. But you'd better keep your promise."Ling chuckled, wrapping an arm around Orm. "I always do."And as the night settled around them, the warmth of victory and love filled the air, making the day unforgettable for everyone.
