Chapter 19 - Mountain Air

The morning sun filtered through the pine trees as the group gathered outside the cabin, stretching and yawning after a good night's sleep. The crisp mountain air was a refreshing change from the usual buzz of city life, and the sound of a nearby stream added a soothing backdrop to their chatter.Orm was the last to step out, dragging her feet and rubbing her eyes. "Why is it so cold?" she whined, wrapping herself in Ling's scarf."It's called fresh mountain air," Ling said, pulling Orm closer to share her body heat. "You'll survive.""I'm not built for this!" Orm grumbled, burying her face in Ling's shoulder."Drama queen," Ling teased, brushing a hand through Orm's hair.Tina rolled her eyes, sipping her coffee. "It's been less than five minutes, and you two are already glued to each other."Saint clapped his hands, interrupting the banter. "Alright, everyone, I've got today's itinerary planned! First, we'll head to the hot springs, then we'll hike up to the hill station's most scenic viewpoint!""Hiking?" Orm asked, her voice dripping with dread. "Do I look like I climb mountains for fun?""You'll be fine," Ling said, smirking. "I'll carry you if I have to."Orm grinned mischievously. "Promise?"The group made their way to the hot springs, nestled in a secluded part of the forest. The steaming pools were surrounded by rocks and overhanging trees, giving the place a natural, almost magical vibe. Birds chirped softly in the distance, and the steam rose like delicate wisps against the blue sky."This is amazing!" Tina exclaimed, setting down her towel."I told you it'd be worth it," Saint said proudly, already stepping into the water.Ling and Orm found a quieter corner of the spring, slipping into the warm water. Orm let out a dramatic sigh, leaning against the edge."This," she said, closing her eyes, "is paradise. I might never leave."Ling chuckled, leaning beside her. "You said the same thing about the sofa last night.""Yeah, well," Orm replied, cracking one eye open to look at Ling, "paradise is wherever you are."Ling's cheeks flushed, and she splashed Orm lightly. "Stop being cheesy.""You love it," Orm said, grinning.Nearby, Sia and Tina were trying to enjoy their soak, but Sia eventually rolled her eyes. "Do you two ever take a break from flirting?""Nope," Orm said, resting her head on Ling's shoulder. "It's my full-time job.""More like a hobby," Ling said, teasingly poking Orm's cheek. The peaceful atmosphere and warm water worked their magic, leaving the group refreshed and ready for the next adventure. After the hot spring, the group set off for the mountain trail. The path was shaded by tall trees, with patches of sunlight breaking through the leaves. A cool breeze rustled the branches, carrying the earthy scent of moss and pine."This is beautiful," Ling said, admiring the view as she held Orm's hand."It's exhausting," Orm countered, already panting after ten minutes of walking."You've barely started," Ling said, raising an eyebrow.Orm stopped and leaned dramatically against a tree. "Go on without me. Tell my story."Tina burst out laughing. "We're not even halfway, Orm!"Saint shook his head. "I knew this would happen."Ling sighed, crouching down in front of Orm. "Alright, get on.""What?" Orm asked, blinking."You're slowing us down," Ling said. "I'll carry you."Orm grinned, climbing onto Ling's back. "I knew you'd keep your promise!"Ling adjusted her grip, standing up effortlessly. "You're lighter than I thought.""Is that a compliment or an insult?" Orm asked, resting her chin on Ling's shoulder."Take it however you want," Ling replied, smirking. As they continued up the trail, the others watched in disbelief."How is she carrying her so easily?" Sia asked, crossing her arms."She makes it look like Orm weighs nothing," Tina added, shaking her head.Orm, overhearing, leaned closer to Ling's ear. "Did you hear that? You're my superhero."Ling rolled her eyes. "If I'm a superhero, then you're my lazy sidekick.""Rude!" Orm pouted, but she tightened her arms around Ling, enjoying the moment. After what felt like hours (though mostly for Orm), the group finally reached the hill station's viewpoint. The sight before them was breathtaking: rolling green hills stretched into the distance, kissed by clouds and bathed in golden sunlight. Below, a winding river glistened like a silver ribbon, and tiny villages dotted the landscape."Wow," Tina whispered, snapping pictures with her phone."This is incredible," Sia said, her voice filled with awe.Ling set Orm down gently, stretching her arms. "See? It was worth the climb."Orm looked out at the view, her earlier complaints forgotten. "Okay, I'll admit it… this is amazing.""You're welcome," Ling said, smirking.Orm turned to her, a playful glint in her eye. "For what?""For carrying you all the way up here," Ling said, crossing her arms.Orm grinned, stepping closer. "Fine. How can I ever repay you?"Ling raised an eyebrow. "You could try walking back down on your own.""Tempting," Orm said, leaning up to kiss Ling's cheek. "But I think I'll just stick to being your lazy sidekick."The group spent the next hour exploring the area, taking pictures, and enjoying the cool breeze. Orm and Ling stayed close, occasionally sneaking playful touches and quiet conversations. At one point, Tina caught them holding hands and groaned. "You two are unbelievable."Orm stuck out her tongue. "Jealous?""Not even a little," Tina replied, but her smile betrayed her amusement. As the sun began to set, the group started their descent. Orm, to everyone's surprise, managed to walk most of the way down without needing Ling to carry her again."I told you I could do it," Orm said proudly.Ling smirked. "Sure, after a two-hour break at the top.""Details," Orm said, waving her hand dismissively. When they finally reached the base of the trail, the stars were starting to appear, dotting the darkening sky. The group made their way back to the cabin, tired but happy. As they settled in for the night, Ling and Orm sat on the porch, watching the stars. Orm rested her head on Ling's shoulder, her voice soft."Thanks for today," Orm said.Ling smiled, brushing her fingers through Orm's hair. "You're welcome."Orm looked up at her, her eyes shining. "Next time, I'll carry you."Ling laughed, kissing the top of Orm's head. "I'll believe it when I see it."And as the cool mountain air wrapped around them, the two sat in comfortable silence, the promise of more adventures ahead filling their hearts.
