Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Flustered and Exasperated

Once Kara and the others had confirmed their departure, Alex turned his curious gaze to Sabretooth and asked, "There's something I'd like to ask you. You're a mutant just like us, so why are you helping humans conduct those experiments on our kind?"

From Alex's perspective, it was clear. Since Wolverine had instructed him to rescue the captured mutants before leaving, Sabretooth—who opposed Wolverine and even blocked his actions—was undoubtedly the one aiding humans in imprisoning and experimenting on mutants. For Alex, it was incomprehensible why a fellow mutant, someone also labeled as "non-human," would assist humans in such cruel experiments on their own species.

What Alex didn't know, however, was that Wolverine and Sabretooth were once loyal subordinates of Stryker. Over the years, Wolverine himself had captured no small number of mutants. Eventually, Wolverine turned against Stryker and Sabretooth, severing ties with them. After Silver Fox faked her death, he infiltrated this island to put an end to the past once and for all.

Sabretooth shrugged indifferently. "No particular reason. I just wanted to live better."

"Just to live better?" Alex asked in surprise.

"Exactly. What's wrong with that?"

"N-Nothing."

Alex chuckled softly, his tone growing cold. "So, for the sake of your own comfort, you willingly help humans toy with your own kind? Sabretooth, huh? You're quite the guilty one, aren't you?"

"Guilt?" Sabretooth sneered. "If it's a crime for humans to experiment on mutants, isn't it also a crime for mutants to harm humans with their abilities? Let's be honest—whether it's mutants, humans, or any living being in this world, which one of us is without sin? The guilty are everywhere, yet who cares? Because everyone's guilty."

"No, there is someone who cares."

"Oh? Who?"

"If you're guilty, you're dead."

Hearing this, Sabretooth froze for a moment before snapping out of it. He asked, "You actually know that lunatic, the Punisher? No wonder you dared to storm in here alone."

The so-called "Punisher" the two spoke of was indeed a fearsome figure. Despite being a regular human, he relied on his military training, combat skills, interrogation techniques, and an unyielding willingness to kill criminals by any means necessary. This ruthless approach had earned him a terrifying reputation.

Unlike most superheroes, the Punisher showed no mercy to wrongdoers. Any criminal, no matter the circumstances, would face certain death. He didn't hesitate to use assassinations, firepower suppression, or even the total eradication of entire gangs as his methods. As a result, both superheroes and villains saw him as an unmanageable madman.

"I didn't come here because I know him. I came because I'm stronger than him."

With that, Alex struck without warning.

Gripping his katana tightly with both hands, he channeled all the spiritual energy within him into the blade. In a single motion, he slashed out with explosive power.

"Shinmei-ryu: Iron Flash Slash!"

The moment the blade struck, a spiral of sword energy erupted from its edge, swirling violently. The blade moved with lightning speed, almost too fast for the eye to follow. The sharp whistle of the sword slicing through the air surrounded Sabretooth, trapping him in a storm of deadly force.

"Boom!"

The spiral sword energy was razor-sharp, and in an instant, it had destroyed half the ground beneath Sabretooth's feet. The fierce energy gusts battered Sabretooth's body, making him feel as if he were standing in the eye of a category ten typhoon.

"Arghhh!"

Letting out a roar, Sabretooth crossed his bone claws in front of his vital areas and lunged away from Alex, fleeing toward a safer distance.

"Clang! Clang! Slash! Slash!"

The clash of spiraling sword energy against bone claws echoed alongside the sound of the sword energy tearing into Sabretooth's body. Blood sprayed, clothing tore, and Sabretooth's agonized screams filled the air.

"Arghhhh!"

After enduring over a dozen severe wounds, Sabretooth finally broke free from the attack's range. But even as he staggered back, his rapid healing abilities worked tirelessly, sealing his injuries in mere seconds. In less than five seconds, his body was fully healed.

"That's all the power you've got?!" Sabretooth taunted.

Suddenly, Alex's figure appeared next to Sabretooth, his blade aimed directly at Sabretooth's head.

"Don't underestimate me, you bastard!"

Faced with the imminent threat of death, Sabretooth went berserk. His speed surged to a new level as he deflected Alex's katana with his right-hand claws and launched a fierce counterattack with his left-hand claws, aiming directly at Alex's chest.

"Wha—?!"

Caught off guard, Alex hesitated for a split second. By the time he realized what was happening, Sabretooth's claws were mere inches from his chest. With no other choice, Alex retracted his blade and stepped back, narrowly evading the attack.

Sabretooth, seeing Alex retreat, didn't pursue. Instead, he stood his ground with a calm expression, his eyes boring into Alex.

"Prepare to face my ultimate move!" Sabretooth declared.

"Ultimate move? Don't tell me this guy can fire beams from his eyes too?!"

Recalling Weapon XI's deadly optic blasts, Alex panicked. He immediately began retreating in a zigzag pattern, putting as much distance as possible between himself and Sabretooth while seeking cover.

"Phew! Phew!"

Alex's evasive maneuvers left faint afterimages in his wake. But oddly enough, even after he found cover, Sabretooth's so-called ultimate move never materialized.

"What's going on?"

Peeking out cautiously, Alex saw Sabretooth bolting in the opposite direction. Every few steps, he leapt forward like a tiger, quickly vanishing from sight.

"…"

Alex stood there, dumbfounded. The empty battlefield before him seemed to mock him, and he could almost hear the ghostly cries of "baka! baka!" from a crow flying overhead.

"You've got to be kidding me. Sabretooth actually ran away?!"

Who would've thought that the same Sabretooth, who had just arrogantly declared his "ultimate move," would turn tail and flee without a second thought?

In hindsight, Alex realized he'd fallen for Sabretooth's trick. Haunted by memories of Weapon XI's optic blasts, Alex had psyched himself out, allowing Sabretooth to execute this simple deception so effectively.

After all, Sabretooth had never explicitly said what his ultimate move was. The rest was just Alex scaring himself.

The humiliation was akin to being distracted mid-fight by someone yelling, "Look, a UFO!" It didn't hurt physically, but it bruised his soul and pride deeply.

"You bastard, Sabretooth! I'll hack you to pieces!"

Seething with rage, Alex felt steam practically rising from his ears. His face flushed red, and with a roar, he leapt out from his cover, katana in hand, charging furiously in the direction Sabretooth had fled.

As a transmigrator, Alex had always been the one playing tricks on others. To be outwitted like this was utterly infuriating. If he didn't kill Sabretooth, how could he call himself a transmigrator?
