"I thought you couldn't beat him?"
As Alex pulled out the blade of his adamantium knife, a voice reached him from not far behind. Turning around, he saw Wolverine clawing his way up the dam wall, his twin claws embedded deeply into the concrete.
Alex shrugged and replied, "Turns out, he wasn't as tough as I thought! Honestly, I thought you'd end up as a splatter of meat paste. How'd you even manage to climb back up?"
"You underestimated me!"
Wolverine let out a hearty laugh as he reached the top of the dam and stood up. Admiring Alex, he said, "You're pretty impressive, kid. When I was your age, I wasn't even half as capable as you!"
"Of course!"
Alex smirked, his tone dripping with arrogance, though inwardly, he thought, With these eyes that can constantly evolve, if I couldn't surpass you, it'd be a disgrace to both transmigrators and every otaku out there.
"You sure are confident!"
Wolverine laughed again, his admiration for the young man growing. It wasn't just the camaraderie forged in battle but also the boy's bold and straightforward personality, which resonated with him. If they were anywhere else, Wolverine would've dragged Alex to the nearest bar to share drinks until they couldn't stand.
"When this is all over, we're definitely grabbing a few beers together!"
With that thought, Wolverine felt a tinge of regret that this wasn't the right time or place.
"Confidence is like breathing for me!"
Saying this, Alex wiped the blood off his still-dripping dagger, sheathed it, and slid it into his right pocket. He then gripped the handle of his adamantium blade with the same hand.
"Looks like everything's been resolved—"
Before Alex could finish, a series of deafening rumbles erupted from beneath them. The entire dam began shaking violently, with massive chunks of concrete peeling away and crashing down below like rain.
"BOOM!" "BOOM!" "BOOM!"
Weapon XI's resilience was extraordinary. Even decapitated, it refused to die immediately. As its severed head tumbled down the dam, its eyes continued to fire scorching laser beams. These beams wreaked havoc, slicing through the dam's reinforced walls as though they were paper. The monumental structure, unable to withstand such relentless destruction, began to collapse catastrophically.
Feeling the tremors growing stronger, to the point where it was almost impossible to stand, Alex and Wolverine exchanged a glance.
"Run!"
The next second, they shouted in unison and leapt off the dam without hesitation.
The dam towered over a hundred meters high. For ordinary people—or even typical mutants or superpowered beings—a fall from such a height would result in instant death. But Alex and Wolverine were far from ordinary. This fall wouldn't be the end of them.
"Shhhhhh!"
Wolverine used his adamantium claws to embed himself into the dam's still-intact walls, sliding down safely and rapidly. Alex, on the other hand, kicked off the walls or used his blade to slice through obstacles, reducing his momentum bit by bit. His descent mirrored Wolverine's in speed and precision.
"BOOM! BOOM!"
Chunks of the collapsing dam narrowly missed the two as they descended, but their skills and reflexes ensured they dodged everything with ease. With agile and precise movements, they weaved through the falling debris, their downward trajectory uninterrupted.
Finally, the terrifying laser beams ceased, but by then, the dam had completely crumbled. The crashing debris sent shockwaves through the ground below, akin to an earthquake, raising a thick cloud of dust that even the persistent sea breeze couldn't disperse. Visibility dropped to nearly zero.
Moments before the dam's total collapse, Alex and Wolverine landed safely on the ground. They exchanged a laugh but didn't linger, immediately sprinting away from the danger zone.
Heavy debris continued to rain down from above, and only a fool would stop to admire the view under such circumstances.
"Your… girlfriend is in this direction. Follow me!" Alex called out as they ran, almost slipping up on his words before quickly correcting himself.
However, Wolverine didn't respond right away. He hesitated briefly before replying, "Alright."
"?!"
Alex was puzzled by Wolverine's hesitation but chose not to press the matter. Everyone has their secrets, and prying into them only breeds resentment.
Moreover, Alex wasn't the type to dig unnecessarily.
Wolverine's hesitation stemmed from one word: "girlfriend." Alex was referring to "Silver Fox" Kayla.
Silver Fox had once faked her death to deceive Wolverine, a betrayal that cut deeply. When Alex mentioned her, Wolverine had briefly considered walking away to avoid facing her. But his unyielding spirit as a warrior prevailed. Brushing aside his doubts, he resolved to confront Kayla and settle things once and for all.
Keeping up with Wolverine's full-speed sprint was effortless for Alex, whose own top speed reached eighty meters per second. This left Wolverine silently impressed.
"Masterful swordsmanship, incredible speed… This kid's strength is unfathomable," Wolverine thought.
"Whoosh!"
The two silhouettes darted toward the island's coastline at breakneck speed.
Meanwhile, two small military vessels brimming with soldiers and advanced weaponry appeared on the horizon, heading straight for the island. Their star-spangled banners made it clear they belonged to the U.S. military. On the shore, wearing his signature white lab coat, Colonel Stryker waited to receive them.
Through his portable equipment, Stryker had witnessed Weapon XI's defeat—beheaded by Alex—and the embarrassing retreat of Sabretooth.
"Damn it! I didn't expect Weapon XI to be so useless!"
Seeing reinforcements arrive, Stryker's heart burned with fury. Weapon XI, his most ambitious project, had failed spectacularly. Facing the still-energetic Alex and Wolverine, Stryker knew his adamantium bullets alone weren't enough to stand against them.
Suppressing his anger and frustration, Stryker revised his plans. He would regroup with the U.S. soldiers and bide his time.
"One day, I'll exterminate every last mutant. Mark my words!"
The sea breeze whipped Stryker's hair against his scalp, but his gaze remained steadfast, his determination as sharp as a blade.
"Mutants are a threat to humanity's safety. They must be eradicated!"
