Sarah sat at the back seat while Charlotte sat at the front. Neither of them said anything and Sarah was getting more curious and restless. She looked at both of them to see if they were going to talk but they didn't. Tired of waiting, she decided to start first.
"So, are you going to tell me or should I start assuming?"
Nick and Charlotte looked at each other.
"Well," Nick started. "The thing is, Sarah, we were…"
"We are dating." Charlotte completed his words.
Sarah's face turned into shock and then confusion.
"How is that even possible?" Sarah yelled. "I thought we were friends, Charlotte. You could tell me everything."
"I know. I'm sorry." Charlotte said. "I didn't know how you would react if I did."
"React how? You thought I would react badly if I knew my best friend was dating my… friend?" Sarah looked over to Nick when she said ''friend'.
"Well, are you mad?" Nick asked.
"Yes." Sarah said. "At you guys for not telling me. I am so happy for you."
Sarah squealed and hugged Charlotte from behind. She looked at Nick. He didn't look too happy. They soon got to Sarah's house where they saw Mrs Andrews standing outside. She did not look happy.
I'm in big trouble now.
They got out of the car and Sarah rushed towards her Mom.
"Mom, I'm so sorry." Sarah tried to explain herself but her Mom cut her off.
"Save your explanation. I come home and I don't see you in the house."
Mrs Andrews looked at Charlotte. "I called Charlotte to ask if you were with her but she didn't answer."
Then turned to Sarah. "Then, I called YOU but you didn't answer. Where have you been?"
Sarah wanted to explain but Nick did.
"It's our fault. We went to a dance club. She wanted to leave but we delayed her."
Mrs Andrews looked at him and looked at Sarah. "You're grounded. For a week." And went back inside.
Sarah looked at him and gave him a small smile. "Thanks."
Nick mouthed a ''welcome'.
Charlotte walked up to her. "Sorry."
Sarah shrugged it off. "That's okay. I had a good time though."
They bidded each other goodbye. Sarah looked on as her two friends, now boyfriend and girlfriend, left.
She went to her room, feeling exhausted. She changed into her night clothes and laid down to sleep. She wondered about everything that went on and soon dozed off.
Monday arrived. Charlotte was sitting in Sarah's living room. Sarah was sitting opposite her. She was lost in her mind that was filled with questions so she decided to ask.
"Charlotte?"
"Hmm?" Charlotte answered.
"When did you guys start dating?"
Charlotte looked at her friend for a while before answering. "Yesterday."
Sarah looked at her, confused. "What?"
"Well, it started when he was at our special spot. I knew we had a connection. He was fun, cool and handsome." Charlotte said dreamily.
"Yeah, he is." Sarah butted in. "But I mean, how?"
"Oh. That? I had the feelings first and at the dance club, I used the opportunity of a dance to ask him out. He also said he had those feelings too but wasn't sure if I felt the same way. I asked, he said yes and here we are." Charlotte explained.
"Whoa." Was all Sarah could say. Soon, they heard a car honking outside.
"Oh, that's Nick." Charlotte said.
They took their bags and went outside.
Nick was standing outside, hands in his pockets. Charlotte ran towards him and hugged him.
"Hello babe."
Nick looked rather surprised at it but hugged her back. They got into the car and the whole ride consisted of Charlotte holding Nick's hand. For Sarah, it looked cute for newly dating couples.
They reached school and settled in for classes. Soon, it was lunch break and the trio headed to the cafeteria. Nick sat next to Charlotte and opposite Sarah. They were talking about this and that and were also holding hands.
Sarah rolled her eyes at them and snapped her fingers in front of them.
"Can I catch a break and you two get a room?" Sarah joked.
Charlotte blushed and brushed a strand of her hair back while Nick shifted his eyes somewhere.
"Sorry, bestie. It must be odd for you." Charlotte said. "Is your Mom still upset?"
"Nah. She's too busy to be upset." Sarah said and continued eating as the couple went back to their conversation.
Just then, she saw Amanda at the other side of the cafeteria, whispering to her minions and glaring at them. She looked really angry. Nick was oblivious to it but Charlotte wasn't. She immediately put her arm over Nick's shoulder. Sarah thought they were going to cause a scene but they didn't. They just left.
Sarah was relieved that they didn't create any scene but wondered why Amanda was angry. She refused to think about her and continued eating.
It was probably nothing.
School was over. Sarah was dropped home. She went straight to the kitchen and searched for some food. There were noodles in the cupboard. She cooked it and sat down to eat. Her Mom would be coming home today. There was still a bit of daytime so she decided to study.
Her phone beeped to inform her of a message. From her Mom. She picked up her phone and opened the message.
Won't be home till tomorrow. I love you, honey.
Sarah sighed. Of course. She put her phone down and continued studying. Her Mom was trying to provide for her but she still wished she wasn't so busy all the time. But it wasn't possible. She smiled.
Love you too, Mom.
