Chapter 1 - Liu Feng

"The mist-shrouded mountains loomed above Liu Feng as he traversed the winding forest path. His footsteps quiet on the damp earth, he navigated the treacherous terrain with ease, his senses honed from years of living in the forest alone all these years...."

Liu Feng crouched behind a thick veil of foliage, his eyes scanning the forest floor. This was his sanctuary, the place where he had grown up all his life with no relative or family.

As he rummaged through his tattered pouch, Liu Feng's stomach growled with hunger. The mysterious food deliveries had stopped when he turned 12, and he had been forced to venture into the city to survive. Begging had yielded little, and pickpocketing had become his only means of sustenance.

But today was different. Today, he had been caught.

Liu Feng's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of rustling leaves and snapping twigs. He peeked through the underbrush, his heart racing as he spotted the city guards. They had tracked him down.

Without hesitation, Liu Feng sprang into action. He sprinted through the forest, dodging low-hanging branches and leaping over roots. The guards shouted behind him, their footsteps pounding the earth.

Liu Feng's breath came in ragged gasps as he ran. He had evaded capture before, but this time felt different. This time, he was tired, hungry, and desperate.

As he burst through the forest's edge, Liu Feng spotted the city's walls looming ahead. He made a beeline for the narrow alleys, hoping to lose his pursuers in the winding streets.

But as he ran, Liu Feng couldn't shake the feeling that he was being herded toward some unknown danger. The guards seemed too confident, too coordinated. It was as if they had planned for him to escape, to lead them on a merry chase through the city.

Liu Feng's instincts screamed at him to be cautious, but his body seemed to have a mind of its own. He kept running, the guards closing in with every step.

And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, the chase ended. Liu Feng ducked into a narrow alleyway, the guards mere steps behind. But as he emerged into the crowded market square, Liu Feng realized he had lost his pursuers in the sea of faces.

Breathless and shaken, Liu Feng melted into the crowd, his eyes scanning the rooftops for any sign of his pursuers. He knew it was only a temporary reprieve. The guards would regroup, and the hunt would resume.

For now, Liu Feng had to focus on survival. He needed to find food, shelter, and a way to stay one step ahead of his enemies. The city was a cruel mistress, but Liu Feng was! determined to make her his own.

Liu Feng's eyes scanned the bustling market square, his fingers twitching with ant pipation. He had been watching the vendor's stall for hours, waiting for the perfect moment to strke.

With a swift motion, Liu Feng snatched a small pouch of coins from the vendor's belt. He turned to make a hasty retreat, but his feet felt heavy, as if rooted to the spot.

The vendor's shout echoed through the square, and Liu Feng's heart sank. He had been caught.

Guards rushed toward him, their faces stem and unyielding. Liu Feng knew he had to act fast. With a burst of adrenaline, he sprinted through the crowded market, weaving between stalls and leaping over obstacles.

The guards gave chase, their shouts and footsteps closing in on Liu Feng. He darted into a narrow alleyway, hoping to lose his pursuers in the winding passageways.

But the guards were relentless, and Liu Feng soon found himself comered in a dead-end alley. The guards closed in, their hands reaching out to seize him.

Liu Feng struggled and kicked, but he was outnumbered and outmatched. The guards overpowered him, pinning him to the ground.

As Liu Feng lay helpless, a guard stood over him, a cruel smile spreading across his face. "You're coming with us, thief," he sneered, hauling Liu Feng to his feet.

Liu Feng's wrists were bound behind his back, and he was dragged away, the guards' laughter echoing through the alleyway.

Liu Feng's eyes adjusted slowly to the darkness of the dungeon. He was thrown into a cold. damp cell, the iron door clanging shut behind him. The sound of rusty hinges and scraping metal echoed through the corridors, making Liu Feng's skin crawl.

He stumbled forward, his hands outstretched in front of him. The cell was small, with stone walls and a low ceiling. A faint smell of mold and decay hung in the air, making Liu Feng's stomach churn.

As he moved deeper into the cell, Liu Feng's foot kicked against something metallic. He stooped down to investigate and found a small, rusty bowl and a waterskin. A faint glow emanated from a torch mounted on the wall, casting flickering shadows around the cell.

Liu Feng's thirst and hunger suddenly became overwhelming. He grabbed the waterskin and took a long drink, feeling the cool liquid soothe his parched throat. Then, he devoured the stale bread and dried meat he found in the bowl.

As he ate, Liu Feng's mind wandered back to the events that led him here. He thought about his life on the streets.

Suddenly, Liu Feng heard footsteps echoing outside his cell. The iron door creaked open, and a figure loomed in the entrance.

The figure stepped forward, revealing a tall, imposing man with a scar above his left eyebrow. He wore a black leather armor, adorned with the emblem of the city guard."

So, you're the little thief," the man said, his voice deep and menacing. "I've heard a lot about you. You're quite the troublemaker."

Liu Feng stood up, his eyes locked on the guard. "What do you want?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.

The guard chuckled. "Oh, I think you know exactly what I want. You see, the vendor you stole from is a friend of mine. And he's not happy about the whole situation."

Liu Feng swallowed hard, his mind racing. He knew he was in trouble, but he had no idea how much trouble.

The guard took a step closer, his hand on the hilt of his sword. "You're going to have to pay for what you did. And I'm not just talking about the coins you stole."

Liu Feng's heart sank. He knew he was in for a beating, or worse.

Suddenly, the guard's expression changed. He looked almost… curious.

"Tell me, little thief," he said, his voice a little softer. "What's your story? How did you end up on the streets?

"Liu Feng hesitated, unsure of what to say. "Why would you be interested?" Liu Feng said.

The guard's questioning was interrupted by the arrival of another guard, who whispered something in his ear. The guard's expression changed from curiosity to surprise, and he nodded curtly.

"I apologize, little thief," he said, turning to Liu Feng. "It seems you're a lucky one. Someone has paid a substantial sum for your release.

"Liu Feng's eyes widened in shock. "What? Who?"

The guard shrugged. "I don't know, but the amount is staggering. You're a free man fornow.

The guard gestured to the other guard, who produced a set of keys and unlocked Liu Feng's cell. Liu Feng stumbled out, blinking in the bright light of the corridor.

Liu Feng's eyes widened as the guard handed him his belongings and gestured to the cell door. "You're free to go," he said gruffly.

He looked around, wondering who could have paid for his release.

That's when he saw him - a man in his early sixties, with a kind face and piercing brown eyes. The man smiled warmly at Liu Feng and nodded.

"Come, boy," he said. "Let's get out of here.

"Liu Feng followed the man, still marveling at his unexpected release. He had lived alone hi whole life, fending for himself on the streets. He knew no one, and no one knew him.

As they walked out of the dungeon, Liu Feng couldn't help but steal glances at the man. Who was he? Why had he paid for Liu Feng's release?

The man seemed to sense Liu Feng's curiosity and smiled again. "All will be explained in time, boy," he said. "For now, let's just focus on getting you out of here.

Liu Feng nodded, still feeling a sense of wonder and gratitude. He followed the man out of the dungeon, into the bright sunlight and the bustling streets of the city.
