Chapter 5 - Fate

Malik (mal - ick)

There she was. The women I had been waiting 19 years for. I could smell that sweet scent from miles away. My beloved mate. After all these years, I was about to give up on any hope of finding her. Her dark black curly hair fell into her face as she sat outside on the porch. Her pale white skin glistened as mist from the rain hit her arm. She was perfect. Everything I had ever dreamed of. Her small petite body sat curled in a swing as she rocked back and forth seemingly enjoying the view. I crept closer to her, my paws leaving imprints in the mud as I drew near. I was about to breach the tree line when I heard creaking. I looked over and saw a boy come out of the back door. "Audra, dads calling you inside. He's concerned you'll catch a cold out here." the boy said, sounding worried. I scoffed, what could happen while I was watching her, "Oh Kai, I know dads not the only one who's worried. I'll be in soon. I'm not done soaking in the rain yet." She said in reply, her sweet voice bouncing around in my head making me swoon. She turned back to face the trees, not knowing I was watching from within. He scoffed and turned to head back inside. "Dinners almost done so seriously don't be too long." He said before entering the house. The door creaking closed behind him. I took my moment to see her more clearly. In my happiness I brushed a little too hard on a branch, it made a noise as I emerged from the tree line. Her gaze snapped to mine. I didn't need to look in her eyes like everyone else did to find their mate, but the moment I did, I just wanted to run up to her and never let go. Her sweet scent disappeared as she went back into the house. I reveled in it until it was fully gone with the wind. I watched from afar as she moved through the house. I know creepy right. I couldn't help it. After waiting for her for years, I finally caught her smell this morning and followed it here. So why would I leave. So I sat for hours until all the lights were off but hers. I went to finally leave when I saw her light turn off but no less than 5 minutes later she was headed straight towards me. I panic and retreat farther in watching as she finds a marked path and starts following it deeper. I wait a little and follow her muddy footsteps and I am brought to a clearing. As I came closer I noticed her lying down staring up at the stars. I noticed her breathing get softer as she closes her eyes and drifts off to sleep. I cautiously walk over to her, my large body easily twice the size of hers. I take in her soft features and light freckles. Her skin glowing in the faint light of the moon. I couldn't help myself as I laid down next to her resting my head gently on her stomach. She moved slightly but finally settled. I lay there for hours while she slept, taking in her sweet smell and warm body. I never wanted this to end. But sadly as all things do she stirred slightly and I heard her heart rate pick up. She was waking up. I carefully stood and walked back to the cover of the bushes. The fur on my back stood up, alerting me to a potential threat. I turned around not realizing she had started walking back home. There stood a dark gray wolf with hungry eyes. "She's mine" He growled. I barred my fangs and lunged at his neck. He doges and takes off after her. I hit the ground snout first. I pick myself up and lick the blood from my mouth. "SHE IS MINE" I howl, I fly after him and by the time I catch up she's on the ground crying. His frame was big for a rogue but not bigger than mine. Just as he goes in for the kill, I lunge again and this time he can't dodge. I clamp down on his scruff and knock him off her. My teeth sunk in deep, drawing out his blood. He whimpers in pain and shakes me off. We circle around her the fight now focused on whoever wins. She cries and sits there staring at us in shock. Go, please. Leave while you can. I think. As if she hears my thoughts she scrambles up and starts sprinting away. The gray wolf snarls, "You lost my dinner, you're going to pay" He leaps forward and knowing my mate is safe, I unleash my true fury clamping my powerful jaws around his jugular and biting down hard, killing him in an instant. Satisfied, I prance over to her house, proud of my victory. I sat just out of view staring at her window. I started to lick my paws, cleaning them of the blood until I saw her sit in the window. I sigh in relief, I knew she had made it back safe, but seeing her in the house, made me feel more at ease. I stared at her for hours until her gaze locked with mine once more. She stands up seemingly scared. I jumped from the forest and turned to make sure there was no danger, once I was sure we were alone, I walked over to her window, sitting myself underneath it. It's okay baby, I'll keep watch In case there are more bad guys. I think, determined to keep her safe. She peeks out the window again and I hear her scream slightly and go deeper into her room so I can no longer see her. Oh, I see. It is me she is scared of. I whimper in sadness but continue to watch the window until sunrise.
