Chapter 9 - 09. Surprise Attack

Everyone had seen how this huge man descended from a questionable height and in the blink of an eye, he defeated the flock of invaders that surrounded him — something even trained soldiers could not manage. Naturally, his presence was bound to invoke fear in the common man since it was a normal thing for a human being to have that level of strength. Some even believed that he was an invader who looked human or at least could disguise himself as well.

Not heeding the command of the soldiers, this man continued to walk forward until a shot was fired at him. The resounding banging was manifested out of fear as the soldier lost control and shot at a fellow human being whom they had falsely assumed to be an invader. However, what happened next was the most shocking of the events in this area of the city.

The bullet resounded with a clink and bounced off from his folded fist, releasing a small number of little, almost unnoticeable sparkles into the air. Their jaws hit the floor as this happened. There was no way this man was human, even if he said whatever he liked, no one around was likely to believe him.

The man sighed and rubbed his neck as he peered forward at the soldiers, his eyes and persisting building striking immense into the soldiers as their legs slumped in defeat.

"I am human. An ally. A friend," he said as he lifted his hands in the air to gesture a surrender just so the observers could rest easy. "My name is Henri… Henri Cavyll."

Henri was intimidating with a chiselled face that was both handsome and also difficult to trust. Perhaps that contributed to the issues he had with the soldiers. Henri glanced to his left and then to his right, taking note of the people around him and realising that they were not much. If they turned on him, he could easily defeat them, especially now that he had been boosted by a strange form of energy he didn't know how to describe.

Henri could see the confusion in their eyes as well as a glint of amazement, admiration and gratitude towards him since he was the one who stepped up to save their lives. From how befuddled they were, Henri could only assert one thing. The way they looked at him strangely after he stepped out of the cloud of dust and debris was more than enough to tell him what he wanted to know.

'Looks like no one among them can use abilities,' he thought as he critically analysed the group. 'Not even one? Or perhaps there is someone, and the person either doesn't know yet or just wants to remain hidden.'

Henri found it strange because just like him, he knew that humans suddenly developed strange abilities that helped him advance against their enemies. He had seen a few people use them and was even forced into awakening his when he was almost killed by a troll. Awakened humans were sprouting left, right and centre as tides of war started to change little by little.

Dave was gasping as he ran until he came to an alley where he ran into and stopped to catch his breath. The young man held his chest to keep his heart from bursting through because of how fast it was beating. Dave had never been so physically stretched before. Even the hardest routine in his workout did not put this much pressure on him… it was nowhere near what he was going through at that moment.

Dave was practically running on willpower. His throat was dry and itchy from dehydration and he could barely breathe well enough. Regardless, he pushed himself up to this point because he wanted to save his sister. He stood in the alleyway for a minute, observing around him to make sure that it was safe and when nothing happened for a few minutes, Dave managed to rest easy.

He leaned his back against the wall that bordered one side of the alley as he exhaled and slid down to the ground, swallowing furiously. Dave had been on the move for about 30 to 40 minutes now and he was still a reasonable amount of time away from Cassie's school. He had tried to steal a vehicle and drive there but that idea seemed to pack a lot of cons considering that there were a lot of invaders around so he kicked against it in his head before deciding to use his legs.

Dave took the time out to think and ponder on what had happened lately. From the sudden announcements that appeared in the sky to the strange powers and abilities that were manifested, which he has seen firsthand, even the spiritual energy was not something that Earth #210797 was known to have. However, strange and burdensome it was for Dave to rely on a source of strength that he didn't know, he was still thankful that it happened. It was only because he awakened and gained spiritual energy that he was still alive.

Otherwise, he would've been dead long ago.

Dave rested himself for about 10 minutes before suddenly opening his head. As he stood up, his face was full of grimace because he was starting to feel the effects of overexerting himself.

'I should hurry up. I need to make sure Cassie is okay.'

Dave felt like his body was going to crack and utterly break into pieces like an egg hitting the ground and yet he succeeded in moving himself. At the same time as when he stood on his feet, something strange came into his field of vision. It rushed into his visual field with power and speed, pushing air against Dave's cheeks.

From what he felt from the sheer pressure this thing came with, Dave knew that if he didn't dodge whatever that was now, his head would fly and leave his body.

Crack~

Bang~

A devastating sound rocked the entire alley, as the screen from the aftermath started to clear sooner than later.
