Savanna's POV
I sat in my usual spot at the back of the classroom, the hum of chatter around me fading into a soft buzz as I focused on my notes. The professor was droning on about market trends, but my mind kept wandering back to the conversation I'd had with Sean. A merman. It felt surreal, almost like something out of a fantasy novel, yet here I was, preparing for a date with one.
Molly leaned over, her dark curls bouncing as she whispered, "So, Savanna, are you seriously going out with a merman this Friday? What's that even like?" Her eyes sparkled with curiosity, and I could see Brook leaning in, equally intrigued.
I smiled, trying to stay neutral despite the excitement swirling inside me. "Yeah, I am. We're going to meet at the beach. We're gonna collect seashells for my self portrait project " I glanced at my notes, then back at my friends, who were both leaning in closer, eager for more details.
"What's he like?" Brook asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Does he have, like, a tail and everything?"
I chuckled softly, appreciating their enthusiasm. "Well, yeah, he does have a tail. It's pretty incredible, actually. But he's also just… a person, you know? We talked about regular stuff—life, dreams, that kind of thing." I felt a rush of warmth just thinking about him.
Molly raised an eyebrow, clearly captivated. "So, what do you even wear on a date with a merman? Do you have to dress for the ocean or something?"
I shrugged, contemplating my wardrobe. "I guess I'll just wear something beachy. Maybe a cute swimsuit and cover-up? I'm not really sure yet."
Brook nudged Molly, teasingly. "I can't believe you're actually going to meet a merman. This is like, next-level dating advice right here!"
I laughed, enjoying their playful banter. "I know it sounds crazy, but it feels like a good opportunity. I just want to see where it goes." I was curious, too, and the thought of spending time with Sean made me feel a mix of excitement and nerves.
"Just promise us you'll take notes," Molly said, her tone half-joking. "We need all the details afterward!"
"Definitely," I replied, a grin spreading across my face. "You'll be the first to know how it goes." As the professor continued speaking about market trends, I felt a flutter of anticipation in my stomach. Friday couldn't come soon enough.
Finally done with my studying, I started cleaning up my books in the library, feeling the familiar rush of time pressing on me. I needed to hurry to the diner; if I didn't, I would be late for my shift. I hopped on my bike and pedaled from ECU all the way to the diner, the wind in my hair invigorating and refreshing.
Once I arrived, I quickly changed into my mid-thigh length navy blue skirt and a baby blue shirt, our uniform here was almost like a high school uniform. However I thought it looked cute so I didn't mind. I tied my hair up in a messy high bun, a look I often went for during busy shifts.
After washing my hands, I got straight to work, taking orders from customers who were already seated. The familiar rhythm of the diner felt welcoming, and I focused on the tasks at hand, engaging with customers and ensuring everything ran smoothly. As I moved around, I couldn't help but think about my earlier conversation with Sean and the anticipation building for our next meeting. But for now, my priority was here, and I immersed myself in the evening rush. Soon closing time came and went. I was so glad to be heading home . Tomorrow was almost here and I was exhausted.
