Chapter 40 - Chapter 40

Lincoln's POV

I was sat in the rolling chair in my study, my body hunched over as I tapped the end of the pen on the document that laid on my desk. It would appear as if I was contemplating over the contents of the document however it was in no way so.

All signs of concentration had slipped out of my mind as usual once the thought of Ivonne popped in. A month had gone by since her shocking wedding with Tobias.

It was certain something was going on when he had showed up to pick her that day she was sent packing as per Allison's orders, nonetheless I didn't think it would get to the extent of them getting married.

A chuckle left my lips and I shook my head at the irony playing out in front of my eyes. Who would have thought my decision would come to bite me in the back?

My ex-wife got married to my enemy and not just that, she had become the Luna of the strongest pack in the whole of America. If anyone had told me such a thing would happen I wouldn't have dared to divorce her.

Don't get me wrong, there was really no such feelings left in me for her, or so I thought. Rather I couldn't seem to understand the piercing pain in my chest the moment I realized she was the bride walking towards Tobias.

I took it to be anger and an emotion akin to betrayal. No matter how I tried I couldn't shake off the image of how beautiful she looked in that dress. For some moments I was entranced by her and only realized myself when Allison said something.

The clock in the study ticked away, the midday sun shining outside the window. A lot of documents and files needed to be attended to signed but I found myself in that state every now and then.

I'll admit I was not the best Alpha, nonetheless I happened to have become more worse since the wedding. The satisfactory expressions they wore was something I'd wanted to wipe off so badly.

Even Allison had a hard time containing her emotions and I didn't blame her. They got us good and I was certain our facial features showed we had been perfectly fooled.

"Alpha," someone knocked at the door.

"Come in," I permitted and adjusted my posture, stretching out the wrinkles on the simple white shirt I had on above black colored denims.

The door moved inwards and my beta Giovanni strolled in, his facial features giving off a neutral vibe as usual. He was dressed in a red suit and slacks with a black shirt underneath.

He always seemed to dress up, filling in his role perfectly as the beta. Sometimes I thought it to be too perfectly thus he was strict about pack duties and was mostly the one who kept me in check.

"I'm here to collect the documents consigning the bottle water factory I submitted three days ago for you to look over," he declared, brown eyes that somehow reminded me of Ivonne peered at me.

"Bottle water factory?" I questioned more to myself than him as I angled my body to the files on the left side of my desk, trying to fish out which it was.

It proved futile and I soon moved to a standing position. His gaze pointed at me unwaveringly as I sorted the bunch of files and papers. Luckily I found it and waved in the air.

"This one?" I inquired and he bobbed his head in affirmation.

I returned to my seat and opened the file. The heading and wordings appearing strange that I had to squint my eyes at it hoping for familiarity but nothing rang a bell.

"Can you come back for it later?" I suggested, not daring to lift my gaze to meet his. He always had a stoic personality and we were never friends so there was no connection or relationship to make me laugh it off, I always had to be professional when it came to him.

"Okay Alpha," he nodded and whirled on his heel. "I'll be back in an hour because I need to send them out today."

I didn't respond and watched him exit the study. A minute after he exited. I began to go through the file and what was written when my door opened again and in walked Allison "Hey baby."

My gaze shifted upwards to see her waltz in, a large shopping back in one hand while she pushed her sunglasses atop her head to reveal her heavily made up face.

"Another shopping spree?" I asked half-heartedly and smiled a bit as she kissed my cheek.

"Yes," she squealed, jumping to show her excitement, the red pointed heels she had on beneath thigh length jean shorts and a black thin-strapped blouse clicking on the tiles.

"It seemed you had a fun day," I murmured like it was something I was just realizing and she grinned.

"Of course it was." She brushed her blonde hair away from her shoulder and dropped the large paperbag on the desk. "Trust me to get only the best."

"Oh really," I mumbled, faking excitement before I offered her a condescending look. "Does that explain why I got debitted thousands of dollars?"

"Don't act that way baby," she whined and reached out a hand to rub my chin. Her touch a bit distracting, rather I didn't allow myself give into it.

"What and what did you buy?" I questioned in a sigh, not having the energy or mood to argue with her. Giovanni would return soon for the documents, therefore I needed to get the documents accessed and approved.

"I got this new edition Gucci bag," she beamed and reached into the shopping bag, retrieving the Gucci design to place in front of me. "Next was this Zara heels. Louis Vuiton blouse."

"All these are new editions?" I implored with a raised brow.

"Surely they are," she clarified. "Trust me to always get quality. Only few of these items are designed so only the privileged ones like me, can get them."

"They are nice," I said, my saliva tasting like sawdust as I tried to hide my displeasure.

"Speaking of the privileged," she started, her hand going to rest on her hips. "Guess who I ran into at the human town?"

"Who?" I quizzed, totally uninterested but had to play along.

"Your less-privileged ex-wife who was lucky enough to charm that old hag of an Alpha you call your uncle," she muttered, her facial features crunching up to show her disgust.

"Where exactly did you see her?" I asked before I could stop myself.

"At the human town," she repeated. "She happened to be coming out of what appeared to be kiddies store close to the boutique I was at."

"What would she be doing at a kidies store?" I raised a question as the wheels in my brain turned. "Wait up is she- No she can't be."

"You mean pregnant?" Allison interrogated and scoffed. "We both know that's not possible."

"Yeah it's not," I let out, my heartbeat which had picked up at the thought becoming calm.

"Did she see you?"

"Not at first," she explained and curled her lips in a smile. "But trust me to make myself noticed."

"Did she look okay?" I questioned and realized I had messed up when Allison lifted a brow.

"You've been acting strange lately Lincoln," she said in observation. "Your curiosity seems strange too."
