Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

Ivonne's POV

My lids flashed open suddeny and groaned as brightness penetrated my vision and sent a harsh signal to my brain. I folded my body in foetal position and craddled my head for some moments.

When I felt it was safe, I slowly removed my hands and peeked at my environment gradually till I unraveled my lids completely. I stretched on the bed and made a sound in my throat as I felt an itchy feeling there.

My focus shifted to the sun outside my window, wondering how it was in a position to stream down on me from that direction. The last thing I recalled was getting home from the attorney's office and that was early afternoon.

In surprise, my gaze shifted to my body to observe I was covered with a duvet. I wondered how it came about hence I was laid crying at the edge of the bed after I had managed to get rid of my heels.

Therefore it was normal for me to wonder how I ended up on the center of the bed, head propped with a pillow and a duvet over me. Throwing the thick material to the side I discerned I was in the same attire I had returned with so no damage was done there.

I exhaled a breath I had no idea I was holding at the discovery and slid my fingers through my then ruffled hair strands. Shuffling on the mattress, I moved my body to the left where I planned to climb down from the bed.

"Shit!" I exclaimed in panic and surprise as the clock on the wall displayed the time as 8:37 am. "What in the world happened to me?"

I shifted my gaze from the clock back to the windows and it all made sense while the sun was coming from such direction. "How the hell can it be morning when I was sure Lincoln brought us back sometime in the afternoon?"

My question was directed at no one but my self as I squeezed my brows, the scenes coming to mind as I searched them for an answer to my question, however nothing came up.

In the midst of my dilemma I sensed a vibration on the bed and whirled around but I couldn't sight a glimpse of my phone which was possibly the source.

After we had left the attorney's office I had set it back to vibration and it didn't cause anymore questions as Tobias never called again till we got home and with the way I went into a deep slumber I couldn't fathom if he called after that.

My vision scanning the mattress, I climbed fully on the bed, moving around with my arms and knees as I tapped the space carefully to avoid knocking down the device or worse, crushing it with my weight.

I felt something solid and grinned in satisfaction as it vibrated in my hold. I sat down and sneaked my palm beneath the duvet which shielded it from my sight and retrieved it.

"Fuck it's a damn new day," I murmured in shock as my brown eyes spotted the date written boldly on my phone's screen.

I was momentarily distracted from the cause at which I was seeking the object as my brain slowly came to terms with the fact I had slept all through yesterday afternoon, night and into a new day.

'What, did you think, yesterday was a dream?' My subconscious or in this case my wolf inquired in a mocking tone which was a big hazy and I could guess she too was stiiring from slumber.

"No wonder someone was kind enough to shield my body from the mostly chilly night," I said more in thought than aloud.

The phone in my palm stopped vibrating, bringing my attention back to it. I sighed at my stupidity and settled in a sitting position. I unlocked the device and was confused to see the number 24 atop the call icon on the screen.

"I just hope nothing has gone wrong with mom," I murmured fearfully, my heartbeat picking up at the thought of my mother's health situation.

One eye closed, I peeked with the other as I selected the icon while muttering, "please let it not be the hospital, please let it not be the hospital, please let it not—"

My chant was slashed midway as I saw the name Tobias marked in red from the top of the call history, all the way down. To be sure, I slid my thumb on the screen.

The list became longer and it appeared all the 24 calls I had missed was from Tobias. Each following the other and dating back to the previous day.

My shoulders slumped in the relief at the realization none of the calls were from the nurses or doctor at the pack hospital. At the same time, my eyes widened in surprise as it was all from Tobias.

Just as my hand hovered above his name, the phone began vibrating again and he was the one calling. Inhaling a deep breath, I let it ring for a few seconds before I picked up.

"Hello?" I answered, placing the device on my right ear.

"Hello Ivonne," his deep voice greeted and I felt the reverberations pass through the device and into my bones as my body shuddered.

'What the fuck is wrong with me? With us?' I asked my wolf in my head, perplexed as to why I reacted in such a manner to his simple voice over the phone.

"I've been trying to get a hold of you since yesterday, however my calls were all getting ignored," he said, going straight to the point as always. "Was that intentional or coincidental?"

His words floated over my head, I heard it nonetheless it seemed as if I was entranced because I didn't grasp it or try to give a response till he called out. "Are you there Ivonne?"

"I am, sorry," I uttered in a hurry, shaking my head to rid it off whatever spell I'd been casted in. "You called quite a lot."

"Of course," he declared. "We both agreed to a deal so it's normal if I wanted to keep checks on you."

"Oh," I let out, my heart deflating at his utterance which came off as shocking to me thus I couldn't fathom when it got inflated with a silly expectation.

"Why didn't you pick up or returned my calls till now?" He inquired not dropping the topic. "I had a busy day yesterday," I informed.

"Explain," he blurted, the single word holding a power he was known for.

"Lincoln and I finalized our divorce yesterday," I obeyed his command.

"Really," he spoke. "It's a good thing after all. It smoothness things out for our deal."

"Yeah, I'm glad," I concurred. "Got home tired and somehow fell into a deep slumber that lasted till this money."

"It's something that had to with your wolf disentangling herself from the connection with his," he explained, the revelation surprising. "Your wolf might not be aware so don't ask her. It's a spiritual ritual which is done by the moon goddess and you needed to sleep so as not to disrupt the process."

"Wow," I gasped, the information packed and heavy for me to understand. "How do you know this?"

"I'm an Alpha who has lived longer than you or that your previous excuse of a mate," he scoffed and I could sense the irritation in his tone. "It's normal for me to know these."

"Still, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner," I went on to say. "It wasn't your fault," he assured. "You didn't know."
