Chapter 4 - The Unexpected Turn

The sky was a deep, grey, like a physical manifestation of my mood. It had been a month since the incident in the woods, and I was still trying to process everything that had happened. But today was not a day for reflection, Today was a day for reality checks.

As I walked into the office, I was greeted by my boss, who was standing by the reception desk, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else.

"Mia, can I have a word with you?" he asked, his voice dripping with awkwardness.

I nodded, feeling a sense of Anxiety. What had I done wrong?

We walked into his office, and he closed the door behind us. "Mia, I'm afraid we've decided to let you go," he said, his words cutting through me like a knife.

I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "What? Why?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

"We've found someone better for the position," he replied, his expression unyielding.

I couldn't believe it. I'd been working at that company for three years, and now they were just letting me go like I meant nothing?, it was all just too much to take in.

I left the office in a daze, I mean I'm fired, so what's the need of staying behind. I've got to accept my fate and move on. I left his office feeling like my whole world had been turned upside down. I called Sarah as soon as I got outside, trying to hold back tears.

"Hey, girl, what's wrong?" Sarah asked, concern etched in her voice.

I told her everything, and she listened patiently, Also comforting me. Her words of encouragement kept me feeling positive and strong even after everything.

Two days passed, and I knew I had to start looking for a new job. I updated my CV and set out into the city, determined to find something.

As I walked down the street, I saw a poster advertising a job opening at a prestigious company. They were looking for an assistant to the president, and I felt a spark of interest. This could be the opportunity I was looking for.

I made my way to the company's headquarters, a towering skyscraper that seemed to touch the clouds. I walked into the lobby, feeling a sense of awe at the sleek, modern decor.

I approached the reception desk, where a friendly-looking woman greeted me. "Hi, can I help you?"

"I'm here to apply for the assistant position," I replied, handing her my CV.

She smiled and took my CV. "Great, let me just check a few things. Can you please wait over there?"

She gestured to a row of chairs against the wall, and I nodded, taking a seat.

Twenty minutes passed, and I was starting to get impatient. But then, a woman in a sharp business suit came out of the elevator and approached me.

"Hi, you must be here for the assistant position," she said, smiling. "I'm Tracy, the HR manager. Please, follow me."

I stood up and followed Tracy through the winding corridors of the building. We passed by rows of offices, each one filled with busy-looking employees typing away on their computers.

Finally, we arrived at a door with a plaque that read "President's Office." Karen smiled and gestured to the door.

"The president is currently in a meeting," she said. "But you can wait for him in his office. He'll see you as soon as he's available."

I nodded, feeling a sense of excitement mixed with nerves. I took a deep breath and pushed open the door.

The office was massive, with a sprawling desk in the center of the room. The walls were lined with bookshelves, each one filled with leather-bound tomes that seemed to glow in the soft light.

I walked over to the desk, feeling a sense of awe at the sheer scale of the office. As I looked around, my eyes landed on a small, delicate gemstone that was sitting on the edge of the desk. It was a deep, rich blue, and it seemed to glow with an otherworldly light.

I felt a sense of curiosity, and I reached out to touch the gemstone. As soon as my skin made contact with it, the gemstone flared to life, emitting a bright blue light that seemed to fill the entire room.

I jerked my hand back, feeling a sense of shock and wonder. What was this thing?

I approached the gemstone again, but this time with sense of fear.As I reached out to touch it, the blue light flared to life once more.

Suddenly, the door flew open, and before I could turn to see who it was, I heard a voice behind me. "Why did you touch it?" the voice asked, sounding commanding and authoritative.

I spun around, feeling surprised and embarrassed.
