Chapter 6: The Unexpected Encounter
Kaiden's eyes narrowed as he pushed open the door to his office. He had been in a meeting with his board of directors, discussing the latest developments in the company's expansion plans. But as he entered his office, his attention was immediately drawn to the figure standing by his desk.
Mia was holding the gemstone, her eyes fixed on it in wonder. Kaiden's heart skipped a beat as he felt a surge of fury. How did she...?, Why did she...?.
"Drop it!" he thundered, his voice echoing through the room.
Mia's head jerked up, her eyes wide with surprise. She looked like she had been caught red-handed. Slowly, she opened her fingers, and the gemstone fell to the desk with a soft clink.
Kaiden walked over to the desk, his eyes never leaving Mia's face. He scooped up the gemstone and held it tightly in his fist. For a moment, he just stood there, his chest heaving with anger.
Then, he seemed to collect himself. He turned and walked over to a safe in the corner of the room, punching in the combination with quick, precise movements. He then put in the gemstone inside and slammed the safe shut.
As he turned back to Mia, he then realized who she was. She was the girl he had saved in the woods a month ago. But as he looked into her eyes, he saw no recognition there. It was as if she had never seen him before.
Kaiden's mind whirled as he tried to process this. Why didn't she recognize him? Was it because he hadn't been fully human when she saw him?, Or was it because it had been dark?.
But as he looked at her, he felt a feeling of pity for her. He sort of Knew she was here for the job interview . She looked so lost, so vulnerable. And he desperately needed an assistant. Maybe this was the answer to his prayers.
"Who are you?" he asked gruffly, trying to keep his tone neutral.
Mia explained that she was there to apply for the assistant position, and Kaiden listened intently. As she spoke, he debated with himself. Should he accept her? What if she discovered his secret?
But as he looked at her, he couldn't help but feel drawn to her. There was something about her that seemed...familiar.
"Very well," he said finally, his voice firm. "You're hired. You can start tomorrow."
Mia's face lit up with a radiant smile, and Kaiden felt his heart skip a beat. He looked away, trying to compose himself. He didn't know why he felt such way seeing her smile."Maybe I'm sick", he thought to himself.
As Mia left the office, Kaiden couldn't help but wonder how the gemstone had reacted to her touch. It had lit up, emitting a bright blue light. But why? What was special about her?
He brushed the thought aside, telling himself it was just mere coincidence. But as he sat down at his desk, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to Mia than met the eye.
Meanwhile, Mia was walking home, feeling elated. She had gotten the job! She couldn't wait to tell Sarah.
As soon as she got home, she called Sarah and invited her over. They spent the rest of the evening partying, laughing and dancing together.
Mia felt carefree, unencumbered by the worries of the past few days and weeks. She was starting a new chapter in her life, and she was determined to make the most of it.
As the night wore on, Mia and Sarah sat on the couch, sipping wine and chatting. Mia felt grateful for her friend, for her support and encouragement.
"Thanks for being here for me, Sarah," Mia said, smiling.
Sarah smiled back, her eyes shining with affection. "Anytime, Mia. That's what friends are for."
As they clinked their glasses together, Mia felt a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that she still had challenges ahead of her, but for now, she felt peace and that's all that matters
