Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Romance in the Skies: Mallory’s Sky Island Adventure

The elevator hummed softly as it carried the group upward. Mallory sprawled on her couch as usual, lazily munching on the last of the seaweed chips from their underwater feast. Alex stood by the window, staring at the ever-changing scenery, while Greg paced nervously.

"What's a Sky Island?" Greg muttered, his fingers drumming against the hilt of his sword.

"Probably a floating landmass," Alex replied, adjusting his bow. "With our luck, it'll be full of crazy creatures or some kind of aerial war."

Mallory rolled onto her side, her voice muffled. "As long as there's food, I don't care what it is."

When the elevator came to a halt and the doors opened, the group was greeted by a breathtaking sight: a series of floating islands connected by glowing bridges of light. The air was crisp and carried a hint of sweetness, while the landscape was dotted with towering crystal trees and buildings made of clouds.

"This… is amazing," Greg said, awestruck.

Mallory rubbed her eyes and sat up. "Looks like a screensaver. Let's find the snack bar."

---

No sooner had the group stepped onto the glowing bridge than a ship sailed through the air, its sails made of shimmering silver fabric. A group of sky pirates armed with bizarre weapons leaped onto the bridge, cutting off their path.

"Surface dwellers!" barked the leader, a tall man with a rakish grin and a scar running down his cheek. His striking green eyes locked onto Mallory. "You're trespassing in Captain Altair's domain!"

Greg drew his sword, and Alex raised his bow.

Mallory, however, simply stared at the man. "Nice outfit. Did you raid a Renaissance fair?"

Altair raised an eyebrow. "You've got quite the mouth for someone surrounded by my crew."

She yawned. "You've got quite the ego for someone whose crew looks like extras in a pirate movie."

Greg and Alex exchanged panicked glances, whispering, "She's going to get us killed!"

---

Altair smirked. "You've got guts, I'll give you that. How about a deal? If you can best me in a duel, I'll let you pass. If you lose…" He leaned closer, his green eyes gleaming mischievously. "You'll be our prisoner."

Mallory tilted her head. "What's the catch?"

"No catch," Altair said, twirling his cutlass. "Just a bit of fun."

Greg whispered frantically, "Don't do it! This guy's a professional!"

"Relax," Mallory replied, stepping forward. "I've got this."

Altair chuckled, clearly underestimating her. "Choose your weapon, then."

"Do naps count?" Mallory asked, earning a round of laughter from the pirates.

She twirled her Staff of Lazula, its faint glow catching the captain's eye. "Fine. Let's make it quick."

---

The duel began with Altair lunging toward Mallory, his cutlass slicing through the air. Mallory sidestepped with minimal effort, her expression bored. She tapped her staff on the ground, and a small burst of energy sent Altair stumbling backward.

"What the—?" he muttered, regaining his footing.

"Still want to keep going?" Mallory asked, stifling a yawn.

Altair's pride got the better of him. He charged again, but this time, Mallory flicked her wrist, sending a glowing bubble toward him. The bubble enveloped him, lifting him off the ground and spinning him slowly in midair.

The pirates stared, slack-jawed, as their captain floated helplessly.

"Call it a draw?" Mallory offered, her tone dripping with mockery.

Altair's laughter echoed inside the bubble. "You're something else, aren't you? Fine, you win."

---

Once released, Altair extended a hand to Mallory. "I've never met anyone like you. Let me make it up to you. Come aboard my ship—The Starwind—and I'll show you the wonders of the Sky Islands."

Greg opened his mouth to protest, but Alex nudged him. "Let's see where this goes."

Mallory shrugged. "As long as there's snacks."

Aboard the Starwind, the group was treated to a feast of roasted skyfruit, sparkling nectar, and fluffy cloud cakes. Altair kept a close eye on Mallory, clearly intrigued by her laid-back attitude and uncanny ability to turn any situation to her advantage.

"You're not like other adventurers," he said, sitting beside her as she reclined on a plush cloud-shaped chair.

"I get that a lot," she replied, munching on a skyfruit.

---

Over the next few days, Altair insisted on showing Mallory the best of the Sky Islands. They visited a floating waterfall that sparkled like diamonds, a marketplace where merchants sold enchanted wares, and a garden filled with flowers that hummed softly when touched.

Despite her usual laziness, Mallory found herself enjoying Altair's company. His charm and quick wit kept her entertained, and she secretly appreciated how he didn't try to push her into action.

One evening, as the Starwind sailed under a canopy of stars, Altair leaned on the railing beside Mallory.

"I've traveled across countless realms, but I've never met anyone like you," he said, his voice unusually soft.

Mallory raised an eyebrow. "Let me guess—you're about to confess your undying love or something?"

Altair chuckled. "Not quite. But I do think you're fascinating."

"Fascinatingly lazy," she corrected, smirking.

"Maybe," he admitted. "But there's more to you than that. You've got this… effortless way of handling things. It's kind of inspiring."

Mallory snorted. "Inspiring? That's a first."

---

Their banter was interrupted by a sudden jolt. The Starwind shook violently as a massive airship appeared, its black sails marked with a menacing skull emblem.

"Sky raiders!" Altair barked, drawing his cutlass.

The raiders boarded the Starwind, and chaos erupted. Greg and Alex jumped into action, fighting off attackers with surprising efficiency. Altair's crew held their ground, but they were outnumbered.

Mallory, meanwhile, stood calmly at the center of the fray. She tapped her staff, sending waves of energy that immobilized raiders left and right.

"You're incredible," Altair said, slicing through an enemy and glancing at Mallory.

"Yeah, yeah," she replied, waving her staff lazily. "Just make sure they don't ruin the snacks."

---

With Mallory's help, the raiders were quickly defeated. The crew celebrated their victory with music, dancing, and more food. Altair raised a toast to Mallory, calling her "the most unpredictable ally anyone could ask for."

Greg and Alex, finally relaxing, couldn't help but notice the growing connection between Mallory and Altair.

"Do you think she actually likes him?" Greg whispered.

Alex shrugged. "It's hard to tell with her, but she's definitely not telling him to buzz off. That's a good sign."

As the night wore on, Altair pulled Mallory aside.

"I've sailed across the skies, always looking for the next adventure," he said, his green eyes locking onto hers. "But now… I think I've found something worth staying for."

Mallory smirked. "If this is your way of asking me to join your crew, it's a hard no."

Altair laughed. "Fair enough. But maybe I'll stick around for a while. See where your crazy elevator takes us next."
